I preferred the multi-fx units with presets when I played (rocktron voodu valve) - not sure what the new stuff would be. But as to pedals when I had a pedalborad, there was one pedal for funky stuff that I thought was real cool. I'm searching to see if I can find it. I'm not sure if this is it, but I think it was the Electro-Harmonix Q-Tron. I could never that kind of sound to be convincing without that pedal or pedal very reminiscent of it..
This has examples of several types of music using it:

Most other pedals were more to flavor, but this one did one thing I couldn't really get any other way. For rock distortion sounds I actually grew more to just like the sound plugged mostly straight into some of the small tube amps.
I also played around with a looper pedal by Logitech (I think it was the RC-30 when I do a search). It was very fun to play around with, but not very practical for me.
