Two things,
"Purchasing a Starter Pack will initiate the creation of a new EVE account. This account cannot be combined with any existing EVE account(trial included) and has to be accessed separately through the Steam client. "
so it doesnt work for trials and this link in short gifts are broken, thats why they are disabled and wont let you play. Unless they fixed it...
From what i understand it only works if you buy it yourself on steam.
On other hand its not first eve online giveaway of megazoid2k, and last winner have few hours playtime listed on steam. Guess theres only one way to find out ;)
Hi all I think if you already have a trial account in a standalone capacity I belive if you add steam to your games list and get the cd key you can active that key with an excisting account at https://secure.eveonline.com/Activation/?steam=1&scdk= that were I activated mine but was a few years ago now.

maybe megazoid2k simply asked for the winner's steam account and purchased EVE with his own credit card.
not sure if this against Steam ToS or EULA...
