It's my birthday today. My final GA this day. Despite really clunky and unbalanced combat I love Arcanum, just like classic Fallouts and Planescape: Torment. They are all in the same league, better than most cRPGs nowadays and I hope that's not only nostalgia talking through me. Yes, I agree. Damn, playing paper RPGs seem so distant now for me, like I was doing it ages ago or in another life. Gonna organize a group when I will be retired, pensioner of some kind of faculty for old, grumpy men ;-)

I'll have to get the game once I beat my ton of cRPGs. Which may never happen considering their 50-300h duration. Next will be Neverwinter Nights, so goodbye people, I'll be off for a while :D

Neverwinter Nights is not that good TBH, second part was way better. You can now only get it on GOG though. First part's strength lies elsewhere. Modules, mods, community, playing with GMs and other players online. At least back in the day, I don't know how it is now. They are different beasts but for the base single player campaign experience NWN 2 is better.

I think the problem is writing. Too many new games are too serious while being dumb and shallow at the same time. I mean not only cRPGs but games in general.

When the graphical part was at its limit, they could only improve it by means of text/writing value and story quality, so I'd agree on that. Anyhow, you can find some exceptions nowadays too, which are always appreciated.

I agree. I think too many new games are trying to tackle serious subjects, but they lack the talent to achieve proper execution. People who wrote Torment, Arcanum and such were taking heavy inspiration from philosophy and literature, mainly existentialism, while the new "narrative designers" get into gaming industry after a bootcamp course on gender studies and a couple of hours of watching youtube celebs and the frauds of "life gurus". And lo and behold, the new games suck... As if it's almost a mystery to these people why proper education is essential to any job.
