Ostbahnhof used to be the Hauptbahnhof in Berlin. However with the building of the new Hauptbahnhof closer to the city center, it lost many trains stopping through to the newly built modern station. It still sports a nice shopping area and is still a connection for many different trains, with 11 tracks and 9 platforms. Five of the tracks are main line tracks going in and out of Berlin, four tracks deal exclusively with S-Bahn trains like one of the ones you rode here. The final two tracks carry trains that never stop at Ostbahnhof. They are through tracks and those trains just speed through Ostbahnhof, adding to it's diminished presence. However, there are still interesting things in the area.

Aside from the shopping area which has multiple different food places, and a Lidl market that is open on Sundays (this is rare). It boasts a hotel, a pharmacy, a post office and many different places to buy trinkets or other necessities. It can be a single place to go to take care of many errands at once if you're planning properly.

If you exit the station to the Northeast, you can wander over to the Antikmarkt which is open only on Sundays in the large parking area out back. It's like a Flohmarkt, but expensive as all the items have more value. Or at least the sellers claim they do. Still it is interesting to see history and many old books, records, and other items can be found here.

Ostbahnhof is one of the locations that is close enough to easily access the East Side Gallery, or what's left of it that is.

Also in the neighborhood, is the Mercedes-Benz Arena, formerly known as O2 World, which I never went to, but from what I remember, it's their prime venue spot for big events. Interesting note: UCLA's Pauley Pavilion which is used sometimes as a venue is just as big as Mercedes-Benz Arena according to two Berlin natives who had been to both places. Looking at the seating differences for both places, you'll notice they are pretty close, but the Arena is a bit bigger.

North and east of Ostbahnhof is Hellweg, a DIY store which carries most anything you might need that you can't find elsewhere.

There are plenty of other places in the area, after all I only had a year to explore the city and it's a fairly large one at that. So, I can't describe everything. Apologies. What I can do, is point out the shadowy footsteps That lead out of the station. It's 4pm and they continue to the West heading down Stralauer Platz, before crossing over An Der Shillingbrücke. Where are they going?

Random Experience:

I lived on the opposite side of the city, and yet I found myself here more often than I'd have liked. Not that I didn't like the place, but because it had easy access to some places I needed to get stuff from that I couldn't get elsewhere without a car. What am I talking about? Hellweg. For me it was like a Home Depot. Aside from having to get supplies for my WG there for certain things I couldn't get other places, one time my roommate from America bought a bedframe and and the slats that go in it from two different people. Now because he wasn't totally precise on measurements and being lazy too, they were 2 cm off in sizes. Big deal? Yes, in this case, it was a huge deal. If he hit the bed just the right way, the slats would fall out and he got all upset about it and being an emo little bitch, was frustrated and just added to his depression. After trying a few lifehack things to see if I could make it work, including shoving cardboard folded over a few times to try to compensate for the size difference, I finally measured everything, and went to Hellweg. There I purchased three perfect width pieces of wood that went across the width of his bed. Along with two 190 cm slats that went down the sides of his bed and two more that went between each other and rested on top of the first three pieces. Together this stabllized his bed.

HOWEVER, that was a fun ride back from Hellweg on the Bahn, carrying a crap ton of wood and having people look at me funny. I couldn't stand him complaining and when he got home that day, I'd already taken his bed apart, assembled everything, and then before he could say anything, I ran at his bed and threw myself on it. The look of horror on his face was priceless and then the look of disbelief as nothing happened. I turned over and said, "That'll be 18 Euro please. I fixed it for good this time."

I really should have charged a delivery fee as I got a few splinters, but I just charged him for materials. The bed was perfect till the day he moved out nearly 9 months later after that. The next person who moved in had no issues with it either.

I've still got more that I haven't been able to put up yet. There are a few unfinished stations and a couple that have to be added. :D
I'll post under my reserved post as soon as I've had time to do it. I needed a break after all the setup :D

Haha, was that the same one that ran from the Flohmarkt because the lady yelled at him?
