If you've never seen them, consider reading the book that influenced the game, Roadside Picnic, or watching the 1979 film Stalker that was based on that book.

I remember enjoying it, both film and book. Someone once told me that the whole film was lost or damaged so they had to reshoot the entire thing in a hurry. I'm not familiar with the director's other work though- anything of his you'd especially recommend?
An older version for Solaris was his work too. I haven't seen it yet (it's on the list though), but it's well-known for being a good adaptation of the book (Solaris by Stanislaw Lem). There are more films, but these two, Stalker and Solaris, are pretty high on the list.
