they have a bunch of dlc for the game for unlockable decks and such, however from the start, the game is still very playable without buying anything else.

Yeah, and the majority of the DLC is simply to unlock things that you can unlock through normal play. I believe there are only two decks that actually have to be purchased in order to gain, and of course the expansion pack.
