Yes, he is at least for Monster Slayers, not for Slay the Spire.

Here you can find his Flash games on Kongregate

And here you can read a little about Nerdook Productions which is only he.

I confirm Monster Slayers is a very good roguelike deck-builder. With the DLC you get as many as fourteen classes to play with, easily making for 50+ hours of content if you want to beat the game with every class. And that does not even take into account Legendary Mode. (you have to put up with a bit of grinding in the first 10ish hours though)

Thanks for the input! I might need to give it a whirl then, plenty of people gave it praise in this thread.

I enjoy Hand of Fate due to the art style and graphics. Also Hearthstone and Elder scrolls legends are enjoyable to play. This game looks similar to Hand of Fate as in it has interactions outside the cards.

It is a pretty cool game all things considered, although the combat can get boring (not a huge fan of that gameplay style). Hearthstone I just kinda bounced off of, even though I should like it on paper. Can't say I tried Legends.

Well the main gameplay is the cards, but the roguelite progression is there too!

Thanks and good luck!

Eternal? I've heard about it; what makes it different to Hearthstone?

Eternal is slightly more complex than Hearthstone and arguably a little more like magic the gathering, but it still has the pretty interface and good looking effects. The biggest difference I'd say is that there are mana (power) cards instead of the automatic mana system in hearthstone and secondly, there is the option to play Fast Spells in the opponents turn or just before units deal damage in combat.

In Hearthstone I mainly played Arena gamemode where you make a different deck each time, I love in Eternal you have a another extra option to play a Draft mode where you get much more choices than pick-out-of-3-cards every time.

Hm, a more typical mana system and reaction spells... That does sound interesting.

Nice giveaway!

I don't want to differentiate here between "like" and "lite" but I reallyreally enjoy playing these type of games. My favorites in order are... FTL, Dungeon of the Endless, The Flame in the Flood, Darkest Dungeon, Convoy. I've also had plenty of fun with other action based games like Nuclear Throne, overalI however I enjoy slow paced, micromanagement titles the most.

Favorite card game... I've played Magic the Gathering casually for over a decade so I would say it's this one. Other card games I like are for example BEHIND! (out of print), Bang! the card game, Ligretto and currently I'm playing Stormbound on mobile.

Permalink

I've tried most of those but, eh... FTL I wanted to like but couldn't get into that much. Darkest Dungeon I still need to get to!
I do like Isaac a whole lot, tho!

Magic... I remember being quite into it as a kid but I never got a chance to play. :/
Can you tell me a thing or two about those games you mentioned?

Thanks and good luck!

Comment has been collapsed.

You definitely need a bit of sci-fi love to appreciate FTL, also you need to get over its rather dry and nerdish presentation in the beginning (which I've learned to love however). But personally as soon as I've started playing it totally hooked me. It's a difficult game to master but with some experience it's also not that hard to reach later sectors and finally get a win. I just love the atmosphere and the mixture of chill and suspense.
Never really got into Isaac personally, somehow it does not work for me...

Magic is just is the most complex game I've ever met. Unlimited number of choices and details. And I love deckbuilding. Unfortunately it's much more expensive today as it was during my youth.
BEHIND! follows similar footsteps as Magic but adds a tabletop component and this mashup is awesome. You can build decks, have a bit of roleplaying, tactical play on a map and can think about own scenarios. Too bad the game got abandoned after second edition.
Bang! (also available as dice game) is a luck based hidden role game for groups in a wild west setting. Rounds are quick, unfair and super fun (at least in our group), but because of its short nature nobody cares if he/she loses, just play another round. Good in combination with some drinks and a stetson.
Ligretto is a classic speedgame, everbody plays at the same time and your goal is to get rid of your cards as the fastest. Some people love it, others hate it. We love it, lots of laughter.
And Stormbound is a f2p app and offers a combination of deckbuilding and map with a ranking system. Nice aesthetics for me, I like it, huge grindfest though.

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh I do have that sci-fi love and I can work with the aesthetic/presentation - but I like the gameplay in a way that I'd prefer if it just went on forever and was a bit easier. :P
Though I still think it works well.

Isaac is peculiar visually but I think it is top-tier in terms of gameplay; it just works so well.

Magic is indeed great, but it is quite difficult to get into it. :/
BEHIND! sounds great then, though it is a shame it is not alive anymore... I guess Faeria is the closest video game counterpart, although still quite different.
Bang! sounds like a fun little group game indeed; short game duration is indeed the best way to keep it fun and prevent people from getting mad.
I've never played a "speedgame" so I am confused as to how that would work... If people are in good spirits I can see it being fun.
Ah, i've actually tried Stormbound - can't say I liked it. It does have nice visuals, tho.

If you want to min-max character maybe, but if you want to play for fun you put it in easy difficulty, or even use one of the mods with pre-made races and experiment.

Awesome giveaway, it's on my wishlist! Thanks for the chance.

I'm a huge fan of roguelikes (and roguelites) and also enjoy a few card games too! That being said, I'd have to say my favourite Roguelike is Rogue Legacy, as it's the first one I played and after that I sat up and took notice of roguelikes, so it's really to blame for me playing so many more amazing Roguelikes and for that has a special place in my heart.

Permalink

Rogue Legacy was quite fun for me but, alas, it eventually got old... I don't like frustrating games, after all - and platforming and somewhat cheap enemies are my bane. :D
Still, it was fun!

What other ones do you consider to be amazing?

No problem!

Thanks and good luck!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh yeah, that's definitely an issue with roguelikes, lots of them are designed to be punishingly hard. I don't consider myself an amazing gamer, but I'm quite lucky that when I practice all the time I improve. Like when I first played Rogue Legacy it was a disaster, but I get pretty into Roguelikes, so playing it again and again I improved. I couldn't do the final boss though, only reached it once and didn't want to risk dying, so I let my husband take it on (think it was on my playstation copy). Felt a bit disappointing, but I really wanted to see the end and I knew I'd bottle it from the stress alone!

I'm quite an odd bird as I like random chance (something most people hate), so I was heavy into some indie games that aren't universally loved. Like Coin crypt, Crowntakers, this one odd cheap looking game called 7 grand steps, there's just something addictive about it.

Darkest Dungeon is good, though like most roguelikes can be hard to get a handle on at first. (If you get stressed, looking up guides can help demystify it, though there is something fun about trying to discover on your own too). Renowned Explorers is addicting, but punishing to those who don't like to min/max if you want to get a lot of the end stuff and extra content. Runestone Keeper. Pretty much everything on my Steam profile with a lot sunk into is my roguelikes and the Team Fortress 2 (which hubby played a crapton as a teen and young man).

I do wish roguelikes would have more gentle options sometimes as I like to see the end and complete it, but often get burnt out before I get there. Still love them though.

Comment has been collapsed.

To be fair, Rogue Legacy does have the typical "difficult platformer" elements of being cheap at times and just kinda hard overall; so, you do need practice in order to "outsmart" obstacles and get used to patterns. Well, I never even got to the final boss so at least you did better than me. :P
Nothing wrong with a bit of RNG in my game, heh! Haven't played those but I have heard some good things about them. I think luck-based games still need to allow you some skill expression, though.

Yeah, from what I've seen of Darkest Dungeon it has the classic pattern of "everything is going fine wham something bad happens and now it is snowballing to disaster"; the Stress element is the biggest reason. I've not tried either of the other two, but Renowned Explorers actually looks quite nice. Heh, I think everyone has a good amount of time in TF2. :D

True that, most of them don't - for example I enjoyed FTL much more with some mods to make it easier.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Absolutely does! Learning which skills and 'progeny' to choose also helps a lot, but it definitely gets easier as you go on. One thing I really struggled to get used to was that touching enemies did damage, which is an old school gaming thing I had to get used to. I did play as a young person, but only on Atari, rather than Nintendo like my partner!

I tend not to use mods as I want the 'true developer' experience (at least at first), but I will if people give me advice on it. I still need to try FTL! One of the things I can praise in Darkest Dungeon is the ability to turn off a lot of the 'difficult' settings so it just becomes 'hard' as opposed to 'insane'. The new DLC they released was just...so frustrating for me until I accepted that there was nothing wrong with needing to go a bit easier...in that case I did even install some mods that made it easier. I just remind myself that everybody is different and that many games are aimed at hardcore gamers who want punishing difficulty. I know I could beat them if I tried a lot, but for me it sucks out the enjoyment if the difficulty becomes frustrating, so I definitely appreciate being able to turn it down a notch!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Indeed choosing the correct child mattered a lot; I did enjoy that element as well as upgrading before runs, quite a bit. Ah, I didn't struggle with that part in theory - but I did in practice. :P
The only old-school console I had was Sega Mega Drive II/Genesis, but I did play Earthworm Jim and Vectorman on it so I was definitely familiar with such old-school gameplay elements.

Oh same here, especially if there are loads of good mods to choose from! FTL is definitely worth trying, it is part of the quintessential modern roguelite experience.

Exactly the same! I want to experience the game as it is supposed to be and beat it "the proper way", but eventually I realize that it is then failing to do for me what a game is supposed to - creating fun. So, like you, I do just go and fiddle with settings or mods.
But yeah, I'll be in for a lot of fun as well as "fun" once I eventually get to Darkest Dungeon. I'll probably end up having to scale-down the difficulty. :D

For roguelikes, I wasn't expecting to enjoy Death Road to Canada as much as I did. The only complaint I could even think of was that some game modes are batshit crazy hard. I liked that game enough to make edits to the sprites in my free time with some PS.

For the King is a 1-3 player turned based rpg, so the co op is a big thing that makes me interested, The rouge like elements comes from collecting lore books from finishing quests and beating bosses, which grants you access to new classes, weapons, cosmetics, and shops. All content unlocked by 1 player is unlocked by all except for classes. But yeah, the RPG elements and questing are what really sold it to me. I also play a bit of Streets of Rouge, Magicite, and Rougelands which all also have multiplayer and rpg elements, just they require less thought and less detailed quests.

Thanks for the WL. HS is RNG and Eternal is very similar to MTG and more skill based. 75 cards in a deck, 3 legendary copies allowed for 1 card instead of 1 in HS, and you can actually be FTP. Enter the Gungeon, The Binding of Isaac, Rogue Legacy, Cryptark, Everspace, Death Road to Canada, NeuroVoider. That's a quick list of Roguelikes that I like a lot.

Onirim is you vs. the deck. Both the physical and digital versions are single-player only. You''re playing to find certain cards in the deck. It won't blow your socks off, but it's a neat little diversion.

Pathfinder Adventures is more complex. You play a group of heroes going through a variety of quests, all of which involve exploring locations (different decks, basically) to defeat a particular villain/monster. It's pretty good, but a bit heavy on dice-rolling and grinding.

Hmmm... Tough question. Both roguelikes and card gamed are one of my favorite genres.

I definitely spent the most hours in Binding of Isaac, but recently I have been playing Enter the Gungeon. And when it comes to card games, I really enjoy Gremlins Inc. It's great to see how many new players showed up thanks to the last Monthly bundle.

And don't even let me start about physical card games. I don't have room to store all of them and I keep ordering more.

Isaac is an obvious choice and a game I myself like quite a lot - the og game was great, much less the current one!
Gungeon is cool, my budy showed it to me; never got to quite trying it, tho.
Gremlins Inc. is different obviously but the game itself seems to be good and it is always nice to see an influx of players! Still not sure if I will try it myself.

Oh, can you give me af ew examples?

Thanks and good luck!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I highly recommend giving Enter the Gungeon a try. Similarly to Isaac it has hundreds of items and crazy synergies.
But Gremlins Inc. - definitely not for everyone. It's not very intuitive and it has many random elements which make the game seem... well, random. And it's not the friendliest game, that's for sure - you basically mess with other players all the time, steal their points, give them nasty misfortunes. So yeah, not an easy recommendation.

And I guess you want a few examples of card games from my collection? Ok, you asked for it...

Sushi Go! - one of my most played card games. It's a simple, but great drafing game in a tin. I take it with me on every vacation and gaming event. Also - it has the cutest artwork ever (unless you have the unfortunate German version).
Race for the Galaxy - for a game with only cards it's pretty complex. It's known for its confusing iconography. You build your little card engine galactic empire to gain points space dominance.
Android: Netrunner - great asymmetrical card game for 2 players. It's definitely the heaviest among these and because of that, I never played it with anyone other than my sister (my best 1v1 partner).
Hero Realms - it's a younger brother of more known Star Realms. Great deck builder for 2 (or more) players with fantasy setting.
Pixel Tactics - small box, 2 decks with identical 25 cards, nothing else. How hard can it be? My god, this one is brain-melting for me. It doesn't have simple rules, but you can use every single card in 5 different ways.
Not alone - it's like Predator... in a card game. One player plays "the alien" while everyone else is trying to survive on a strange planet. Like other games, it's basically just cards... but somehow it feels tense during the whole game.

I did try Blazing Beaks tho; have you?
Well, I am a very open to all kinds of games; if nothing else, I can watch some youtube gameplay and then decide!

Sush Go! sounds interesting, I don't think I've played a game like that. But yes, the art is totes cute!
Race for the Galaxy does look complex just from the first page, haha!
Android: Netrunner is definitely something, I read about it a lot once - it got some mixed buzz because of the various characters in the game - it is quite complex as well.
Ooh, Hero Realms looks cool, maybe like a game for me! Not that I could play it with anyone. xD
Eww, pixel style! Sounds impressive if it is so complex from so few cards, tho.
That is a great concept for a game! And yes, that sounds like the hallmark of a good game!

Thanks for elaborating!

I enjoyed playing a lot of Yu-Gi-Oh games, especially those with story campaigns. (mostly found on NDS,PSP,PSX). As for the current 'popular' Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links, I don't like it. It's way too simplified compared to how the original Yu-Gi-Oh plays, and suffers a lot from microtransactions. So I never bothered with it.

As for Gwent, it's great. I am playing it and will continue to play it for quite a while.
Unlike most other f2p games, there is absolutely no need to spend any money because just by doing the daily quests you will have more than you need, the whole game system is pretty generous, and there are also often great events. They will soon (October 23rd) do a major overhaul to the game and also release Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales - Singleplayer story campaign.
And honestly I am mostly looking forward to playing Thronebreaker since I like The Witcher world, books and games. ^^

I've only played the 3 old PC ones. But my friend says teh PSP ones are great!
I have no idea bout Duel Links... Never seen it, only heard in passing! But is it bad that it is simplified, since YGO is so complex in the first place?

Ah, I don't know much about Gwent... But a good F2P model helps!
Yup, the Witcher setting is great, for sure!

Well Duel Links was basically made to be a phone game, so they made it that the matches last waaaaaaay shorter. Some matches are over in a minute. They changed almost everything.
4000 LP instead of 8000, 20-30 deck size compared to 40-60, only three spaces/zones for monsters and traps instead of five, they removed main phase 2, removed a lot of summoning methods; Xyz, synchro, pendulum and link summoning. Changed a lot of card skills and removed a lot of them. etc.
Sure, Yu-Gi-Oh isn't a complex game, but compared to this version it at least had a lot of depth to it. With good deck building and skill some matches would take a lot of time and I liked it that way.
To me, Duel Links just feels like some totally different game.

P.S. While I was checking some info about it I bumped into this video.
Funny but true. ^_^

Such short game length does sound like a bit too much.
Thanks for explaining all of that does sound a bit lame, except for removing the advanced summoning methods which were always kinda "wut" to me... I could probably get into them but they are all so odd.

Like, yeah... That video is perfect and exactly how I feel! Maybe if I was used to YGO I'd find it normal but since I am not I just go "wut".
