Description

My Coloring Book Series part 4
I am an Army brat, raised and born in the USA(excluding a 5 year tour of Germany), but now I live in Denmark. I really love Denmark, except for the food! Danish food sucks in my opinion. Therefore, I taught myself to make food. For the last 10 years I have been cooking for my family almost everyday. And I love it! My favorite foods are Italian, Greek, Mexican, Indian and southeast Asian (Thai, Vietnamese, etc) I am always looking for new dishes to make, and would like to hear what your favorite dish is. What is your favorite food(s)?

(on a side note, my favorite beverage is beer; pilsner, ale, stout, porter, whatever. Wonderful beer is made all over the world. What is you favorite beverage?)

Dishes I will try to make... (Thanks to the steamgifts community)
Hungarian fisherman's soup √
Cuban style picadillo √
Katův šleh
Hodgepodge
Brazilian barbecue (Churrasco)
Thai pad
Rösti
Fish BLT sandwich
Gratin dauphinois
Spicy cheese straws.
Dandelion wine. (not really a dish but it's on my list nonetheless ;) )
Quinoa with pinto beans, romaine lettuce, lemon juice & avocado all mixed together.
Loh Mee

You may not get too many answers to your questions. First, because bots don't read... and second, because people don't read either. :)

For me, if I have to pick a single food and a single beverage: pizza, and iced tea.

Hey, can you get danish in Denmark? I heard somewhere that danish is not actually Danish so I am curious.

In Denmark we call it wienerbrød, (Vienna bread) but yes, Danes love their pastries and it is much better than the Danish you find in America.

I love a lot of dishes, hard to pick a favourite one - let's go with gyros (and it's variations) and hungarian fisherman's soup :) Favourite beverage would likely be lemonade made with fruits, like blackberries, or any berry juice.

Churrasco or Churrascaria? What is the right term?

"Churrasco" é the word in brazilian portuguese for "barbecue". That's literally the translation. On the other hand, "churrascaria" is the place where you can eat diferent kinds of meat made in barbecue style just paying on single valor for it and paying additionally for beverages in general.

Favourite food and drink, that is a hard choice.
So many super tasty dishes, I will pick a few of my favourites, from differrent countries.
Gyros (Greek, I guess most people know), Katův šleh (Czech, pork with tomato sauce, super tasty), Hutspot (Dutch, known as Hodgepodge in English, mashed potato/carrot/onion), Goulash (Hungarian, the stew (pörkölt), not the soup (gulyás(leves)) , although that is tasty as well)

Favourite drink is probably hot chocolate, any type

Hard choice but I'll just go with one of my favorites (I just can't pick one): Chilli con Carne. Thanks for sharing :)

Permalink

I make an awesome Chilli con Carne(If I may say so) I only use beef chunks, none of that ground stuff! And I make it HOT! ;)
It should be served with bread and not rice.

Har, har. So, we meet again, stranger ;]

Totally agree on chilli, it's Peppers-with-goddamn-Meat, can't go easy on either. Same with cumin, same with garlic. Though it's a bit-a-case of "do as I say not as I do" with meat for me, 'cos real, honest to gods, non-ground beef is way out of my financial league... Didya know that adding a chunk of dark chocolate or at least cocoa has interesting results? It's hard to describe other than by comparison to an earthy, almost thick-seeming dry wine. And I'm a barbarian hopelessly guilty of going overboard with beans and also chucking in canned corn but...it's an affordable way to feed the eager moocher maws...
Not to mention that I kinda like beans.
And let Japanese keep the rice for their puny kare-raisu paprikasz ;p

Uh, are people really capable of picking their favourite anything? Every time I see such a prompt I instantly panic. So much stuff I'd like to share, yea? Drinks are pretty straightforward, heh. Surely it's cocoa / hot chocolate and real, homemade, unfiltered hard cider. The kind you drink lunching on cheese, stale bread, some cold cut and an onion to feel straight outta mediaeval fantasy. The kind you make from pressed apple juice, fermented with their own yeast even. Though I add Burgundy yeast just to be sure. And the more alcohol it has in the end, fermenting on a strong culture, the less sweet it's gonna be so it's win-win. Beautifully delishus. And yea, muh english seems to be breaking down, probably from drunkennes desu~

I'd recommend a nice, stupid-simple dish that's so straightforward, it's hard to actively dislike:
Mashed boiled potatoes are mixed together with about half their mass in curd cheese and a reasonable (depending on who's asking) amount of slightly(!) browned onions, liberal amount of black pepper and salted to taste; can be left sitting in a fridge for a couple hours (disclaimer: also great for midnight poaching if left sitting overnight, take care ;p). Then you need to prepare yourself some pancakes, but not the omelette-like ones with baking powder; the legitimately flat and wobbly ones are what we need. Something-something-crepe may be the word. You spread them with the prepared filling, fold them into triangles, batter lightly and deep fry to utter deliciousness until crunchy outside. Served with chopped parsley greens on top. Have fun x)

Lmfao! You are killing me dude! My son just got home and he thought I had been crying. Thanks for the suggestions! I have made a bit of berry wine but I should really make cider... Danes love their apples, they grow everywhere... Well....I guess that's because it is the only fruit tree that can successfully be grown in Denmark :p

Glad to have made you laugh, hey, yer cool (:
Some people seem to react with distress in hindquarters at some of my less sensitive remarks, so it's always great to meet those that don't. Oh, how I love all kinds-a forage-wines. Elderberry, strawberries & lime, dandelions. You've certainly got to try the last one. Needs, say, 5kg of calices per probably 20liters. Boil them in water for a few hours, add however much sugar you usually do, about a whole lemon per 5l and an orange on top of that, cuticles optional and you're set. Most people discard the floral mess after a couple initial days of maceratin', but then again, most people call it a kaiser blade also don't drink the sediment ;]

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, I make elderberry wine because they grow in abundance in Denmark and it makes a nice dark "red" wine.. I also make elder-flower wine, but that's mostly because my woman likes it. The elder-flower wine I make is similar to your dandelion, as I also add 1 lemon per 5l. I will make dandelion wine this summer! I always clear my wine before bottling, so no sediment. (but sometimes I get impatient and drink some before it's finished, so thanks for the warning)

Aw, sorry, there weren't any warning, I just redact-derped and the sense kinda blurred. By all means, let's all drink the sediment, all the delicious lil' yeast-children of ours and plant matter. It's probably not even harmless but beneficial, I do it all the time. Heh, none of my wines ever lasted until bottling. Probably should be ashamed but whatever (;
Oh, there is one little tip. The less of the green parts of the flowers you leave, the less of a herbal aroma you get in the wine, for better or worse. Myself, I like it all apothecarium-smelling the best~
It's nice to go and meet a person in the know.
All the best to ya & your family, Sir.
See you around here someday (;

I personally love making pad thai, usually with tofu, chicken and peanuts but I also make it quite often with shrimps.
If I have to choose something from my country I'll probably go with rösti (It's basically hash browns, but better) because you can eat it with any kind of meat and it will always taste good :D

Ice cream. Also a local thing I can't translate that resembles calzone or stuffed pizza. I love pizza itself too. Also mashed potatoes. Also cracker nuts, especially with cheese and onion flavouring. Also various not-actually-Chinese rice and spaghetti dishes that are sold as Chinese food here.

For drinks, boza, ayran, rose water, hot chocolate, and most kinds of fruit juice.

I love calzone! What is it called this local thing is your language?

Comment has been collapsed.

It doesn't really have a standard name. The place I buy it from calls it Rodopska Zakuska (Rhodope Breakfast/Snack), but if I google that I get something entirely different. Thing is, here we have tons of little bakeries that sell variations of banitsa and other baked goods, and no two use the exact same recipes. So they end up making up their own names for half the things they sell. And I've never encountered that exact thing I like at any other bakery, so I don't know what anyone else would call it.

The thing itself is like a thick sleeve of pizza dough with lots of sauce inside and a long vienna sausage/hot dog in the center with the tip sticking out of the dough on both ends. The top of the dough is covered in melted cheese. The dough is rectangular-ish, almost the shape of a brick, not like calzone. (Well, not like the images of calzone on the internet. The bakeries here make calzone with the same brick-shaped rectangular thick dough. In fact, the only difference is they use chopped meat that doesn't taste as good as the sausage and seal the dough on both ends.)

I really love this particular thing because it manages to combine the right amount of dough and filling. That same brick-shaped dough is used for various other pastries by most bakeries here, and while I very much love the dough itself, most pastries using it are too plain, whereas this one has plenty of meat and sauce and they both taste good.

I love pepperoni pizzas! Calzones, just like Vercinger are a big hit with me also. Also tilapia, salmon, tuna, flounder and catfish are awesome to cook in various ways. Almost all fish are good with BLT-style sandwiches, so I highly recommend you try it if you like fish. Mexican and Italian style food are some of my favorite, but I like some Greek and Indian dishes too. Very spicy food is good sometimes. I prefer habanero or cayenne, but ghost chili from time to time as well. Cheese straws really rule for a kinda snacky item as well! I love cheese and taters a lot... I'll stop blabbing.

Favorite drink. Maybe... a nice vanilla or caramel/toffee-ish frappuccino or something I guess. Coffee is great!

Pizza is not pizza without pepperoni, at least in my option. Yes I like fish! I live on an island! lol. Fish BLT sandwich? That sounds great. I would guess that the fish should be grilled or fried? I love spicy food. (You do a lot of blabbing for a tree guy... lol ;) )

Yeah, grilled or fried both work I'd imagine. So far I've enjoyed grilled salmon BLT's best, but it goes surprisingly well with the other ingredients. I haven't tried fried that I can recall, but probably a good idea with some fish types. As far as actual fish dishes, that's probably what I cook the most of when I get inspired to do that (or my girlfriend doesn't cook, which is generally a rarity overall). I have a few I created from other things/accidents that I really like!

The cheese straws I make a pretty spicy, and more fluffy and airy, just like if I were making soft chocolate chip cookies, sort of, but with sharp cheese/spices instead. So they're not really straws anymore I guess, but I still call them that since they have the same ingredients as the other kind. Very good and they go way too fast!

Oh yeah, and for alcoholic stuff, I forgot that I still like fermented stuff... like kombucha! Great stuff, but very meager amounts of alcohol (no percentages even shown, so probably under 1%). Good probiotic source, for those into that sort of deal. The taste... in a way, kinda reminds me a bit of the days when I did love to have a few beers though ;)

My woman can't cook, but she thinks she can and this is why I won't let her cook and the real reason why I make the food ;)
OK, these cheese straws actually sound good now that you added spice to them.

Good extra sharp cheese and a pretty decent dusting of cayenne pepper or something similar would be my last suggestion for them. I usually make large marble/ping pong ball sized balls from the final mix and flatten them slightly before sticking them in - they cook fairly quick once the oven gets toasty, so I have to take a peek once in a while after a few cycles (since I make a good amount at a time and the oven only has a couple of racks/holds so many at a time). I can roll/mash more up as each new batch is cooking away, so it becomes a sort of system for me. Most recipes out there should have a similar approach to what to add in the mix and the temp/times overall though.

Well I mentioned earlier that I have a feeding tube, but there are a few things I can still consume. The best of the Best Coffee, and my moms Tortellini Soup. Cooking is definitely my favorite hobby. It is an art form created and consumed on the same day. Only those who are present in this short time, can appreciate it's beauty. And then it is gone forever!

Comment has been collapsed.

As an art form cooking is among the best. Art in all forms has the ability to bring joy to other people, though this one's beauty is fleeting. Taste, smell, appearance are all lovely, but fade over time or when someone eats it ;) That temporary beauty is part of what makes it special :) And the joy it brings to other, the memories it helps create are much more valuable. Enjoy your latest creation with your family, and amusingly enough I'm enjoying that soup I mentioned earlier XD

_“People die . . . so love them every day.
Beauty fades . . . so look before it's gone.
Love changes . . . but not the love you give.
And if you love, you'll never be alone.”

Hard to pick an actual favorite dish, but I always get a craving for sushi. Japanese and Korean food are probably my faves. From Japan (aside sushi) I really love tonkatsu and curry. And from Korea I really love kalbi ribs with rice and a side of kongnamul muchim.
