I am watching the play through from CohhCarnage (great guy, check out his streams) , but still want to support the devs, especially because of the dire circumstances they had to face.

It is, but can't they use a totally new account that can risk a permanent ban on Steamgifts, and redeem the key on another?

The FAQ states that "Users sign-in using their Steam account, and we require their account to be valued at $100.00 or greater"
So they have to spend some money on said new account, and now they're risking it.
