Description

Welcome to the Seventh week of the 52 weeks of Christmas!!!

What is the 52 weeks of Christmas you might ask? Well it is an idea I had where I will be gifting a new game every week for 52 weeks(that's a whole year!!!) and hopefully making someone's week feel like Christmas in the process. I hope you will have as much fun as I do with this.

New Week, New Question: What do you guys consider to be a good game? Which factor comes into play when making that decision? How important are the Gameplay, the replayability, how the feels of the game to you? Are graphics important?

My response: A good game for me has to combine a good story and good gameplay. The sort of games you start playing and totally lose track of time. Gameplay and atmosphere are very important for those type of games because it really helps with immersion. When good gameplay complements a good story in an atmospheric setting, I believe the outcomes usually is pretty good. Other aspect such as graphics and the art direction are also important. When all of those are well put together with no compromises, then you get a great game.
I also believe that there are some games that are just fun to play and do not need a story at all(i.e Just cause 2). What do you guys think? Let me know I read every single response.

You can join my Steam group where you will be alerted of all my giveaways, participate from time to time in choosing my next giveaway and even chose which game related question to ask. This week question was asked by Sword~. Thanks :)

A discussion thread will also be open with this question and the old one if you want to discuss it with me or others :) http://steamcommunity.com/groups/weeksofchristmas#

God bless.

Was first! :D Thanks. :)

A game needs to be fun, or at least interesting, while the gameplay lends itself to the enjoyment of the game. That is all a game really needs to do for me to consider it "good".

Graphics in the end don't matter, one of my favorite games is an ASCII game, and story only really matters in some genres. While it often helps to have a setting of some sort, it isn't always required for a good game.

In order:

  1. Gameplay
  2. Controls (hate console port)
  3. Story
  4. Replayability

Oh, there are so many completely different things that can make a game good, and some of them even contradict one another. A game you can pick up immediately and intuitively -- Plants vs. Zombies, Tetris. A game that gives you so many different things to do -- The Sims, Minecraft. A game which you can control so smoothly and fluidly that you don't actually realize you're doing it via peripherals -- Half-Life, Unreal Tournament. Story and setting so good that you sort of incorporate details of the game world into your long-term memory -- Morrowind, Planescape: Torment (haven't played both of them for quite some time, but I still remember the town or character names of Vvardenfell, or the layout of the Planes). Merciless realism offering you a unique level of challenge -- ArmA, DCS games. Games offering choices which aren't divided into good and bad, but which you can use to shape the experience to your liking -- Jets'n'Guns, Deus Ex (yes, I realize these are completely different types of games). (I'm ending this here, not because I can't think of more, but because I'm too lazy to continue. ;-))

(Oh, and thanks!)

Okay, adding some more. :-)

Games that give you the sense of making measurable progress with every step -- LEGO games (where you keep collecting countless types of collectibles or "money"), Limbo, Night Sky. Games that successfully dangle some "carrot on a stick" in front of you all the time -- Diablo, Dungeon Defenders. Games which are technologically awesome and you play them mostly to watch the spectacle -- Another World (considering when it was released), Far Cry. Games with easily accessible editors, allowing you to become more than just a consumer -- TES games, Quake.

Thanks for the Episodes, I bought the 4 a while back and seeing the price of EFLC I didn't see myself buying it.

To me a game needs to be enjoying, graphics only needed to be playable (Might and Magic VII is still beautiful for me:)). A well made story with character with actual background (looking at you FF12) and a goal.

This is a though question. It can't be one thing, or even a few things. Most of the components have to work together as best as they can.
It should have something to appeal to the player. You said you like Just Cause 2 for the ridiculous stuff you can do in it. As I said last week, I don't find that fun. I could think of STALKER that impressed me with its atmosphere, or Jade Empire with its setting, these worked for me.

In general, it shouldn't take you out of the experience, it should be polished and everything should feel right about the mechanics. The theme of the game, the art style or the music, should also accompany the tone reflected in the story.

This has been a difficult question, one which I never been able to explain to myself. Thanks for the game, but I'll pass on it.

Graphic isn't the most important thing, but, you know, it has to be stylish. Like in Evil Genius, it has to get older only technically, but represent exactly what creator wanted it to without a need to use imagination too much. It must deliver a message, so my brain could visualize it for me easily. And it must not get my eyes tired quickly, as it was in BIT.TRIP RUNNER. Music also plays its role, creating a feeling of the world along with graphics.

Gameplay is the most important thing. The easier it is to control the character, the more I can do as a character, the more I'll get into character and feel myself as a part of its world.
