I'm glad to be a part of this community train, I'll leave a few games today and a few more later. These giveaways I've posted end on the 25th due to a small mistake on my part, keep that in mind.
Storywise afaik there is not much connection between the games. So you don't have to play the first part to understand the story in the second one. It's a completely new story. im might be different for the next game Octopath Traveler 0.

I don't know if you plan to gift through steam, but steam autumn sale starts on Sep 29th. So you might have to ask the winner to be a little patient. I got the game on the last sale 60% off, if remember right.

I havent played first one but the prologue demo for 2 gives 3 hours playtime (one char intro story is about 1 hour id say)
People seemed to like that you can speed up the combat which will def be huge help if the game keeps doing the RNG "you walked into enemy you didnt see" classic JRPG trope I'd rather they got rid of not revive XD
But it seemed to be nice demo at least

My friends that've played the game, plus everything a quick google search turned up, suggests the second game's just a more polished (in apparently most every way, with QoL improvements often being highlighted), but extremely similar alternative to the first. (Aforementioned friends do suggest playing both, but in order.)
Which is to say, you might not be hugely inclined to play the first game after the second, since there's not much in the way of gameplay difference, stand-out narrative, or similar (and, like rufioh, google results suggest a lot of other people also apparently find parts of the first game a bit easy to "fall off on", whereas the second game's a lot more consistently praised.
Rather, other than IGN (which rates the first game two points higher than the second, 9.3->7), all personal and critical reviews I found consistently put the second game higher than the first, with critic sites generally putting the second game a point higher (8->9) than the first). More notable, IGN's entire reason for reviewing the second game so low (note, same reviewer for both reviews) appears to be down to the fact that the second game was simply too similar to the first game, making it feel overly familiar and dull by way of that one fact alone. In short, heavily implying a "play one or the other" recommendation (as well as heavily reinforcing IGN's well-memed trend towards exaggerated review scores 🙄).
In sum, if you just want the best experience without being completionistic about it, seems like it's pretty safe to go straight to the second game (as you're not missing out on any unique concepts or connected gaming experiences by skipping the first game). As far as whether you should play both games or not, that seems to be down to your personal preference (and, perhaps, giveaway luck). Definitely does seem the games should be played in release order, however, if planning to play both.
Again, only speaking as someone whose friends have raved about the game but who hasn't played it themself.
I won this in TGA group and enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. 10/10 jrpg

Supposedly you can play this game before first one as the stories arent connected (FF style). I wonder would I like this, maybe time to try demo :P
