Thanks for the comment; I'm going to take it as a compliment. I'm mostly neutral on the aesthetics of dimples, but maybe it's because I can see them whenever I want. A lot of people have certainly commented on them in person, and there have been various devices invented for the sole purpose of creating dimples, so there must be a good number of people that like them.

I'm not an expert on selfies or portraits, but a couple of things which could help are (1) to use a camera (even a P&S camera) and not a phone, and to use the longer end of the zoom for more flattering perspective, and (2) to use soft natural light such as window light or daylight shade. For the first tip you'd probably need someone else to take the picture or to put the camera on a tripod and use the self timer.
