Some people prefer DRM-Free over Steam's DRM. Simple as that. Both will just co-exist with each other.

well sites like Humble Bundle give both DRM and steam, in this department HB is superior

I am not sure, gog needs some more content and games. Also the winning against steam part isnt happening any time soon, we will have to wait a little more. Especially since steam now offers refunds. The good thing with gog is that ots drm free.

Yeah, i think that if steam keep not fucking with customers and making good moves like that i will be the winner, i also prefer steam in general, but i really like gog as well

GOG needs more AAA and a better discount system.
Sadly a lot of AAA won't sell on GOG cause it's drm free.

To be honest, even though I like GOG and prefer DRM-free I still have more steam games. It has more variety to begin with. I don't think that gog will become the dominant player against steam simply because of steam is like the facebook of gaming - most gamers have it and a few games in their library, by necessity if not by choice.
What would it take? Well, if steam magically disappeared overnight...
But I would weep for my gone games. >>

They will not, and they don't need too, they are in different markets.

GOG would probably fail if Steam adds the "DRM-free" feature to games, next to achievements and stuff. It would make games more attractive, like trading cards do, though the new refund system would fail.
Long story short, I NEED cloud saves. finding every save folder and linking it to GDrive is a pain in the arse.
The thing that would REALLY make GOG win would be the ability to add all your old CDs to the collection, like you can with The Witcher and those Gamespy/StarForce games

^ This
1.39 € for a retro game on sale is just not doing it for me. At least make some decent bundles for a fiver.

+1 any cd-key for any game on their service should eventually validate. that's gonna be a game-changer

Well, I got past the family sharing that way.
By the way, are The Witcher 1 and 2 able to run from the exe without Steam? (when installed from Steam, that is) I have GTA SA through family sharing and it has 0 DRM, so I'm able to just double click the exe and play whenever I want.

It can't. There will be always some people who chose GOG over Steam but they'll stay as minority forever.

To my mind, probably easy multiplayer setup/cross-multiplayer options with other services like Steam

Don't get me wrong; I like GOG, but GOG will take over Steam's place as soon as Bing replaces Google and [insert social network] replaces Facebook. So, barring any truly colossal mistakes from Steam's management, not in the foreseeable future. What I actually see as much more likely is GOG selling Steam keys in addition to what they're doing now, just as Humble Store, Green Man Gaming, etc. are doing.
Also, Steam has DRM-free games. DRM isn't mandatory if you're putting your game on Steam. http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/The_Big_List_of_DRM-Free_Games_on_Steam

GOG is not worth the time and money for me tho and looks like a junkyard, "old digital games" not worth that money asked by gog, steam in the other hand is the PCMasterRace Client with new releases and has its future secured with their steam os and machine.
Gog started like an idea for some old games to make playable/optimized on newest machines that not existed or playable/optimized on steam, but now what is the purpose to own a drm free game on 2015? you feel proud because you bought a drm free game... but you still have 500+ on steam.
If you want old good games just browse ebay and buy retail copies with that smelly cd and paper paint, then optimize it by yourself, if you cant find it or it is rare, high priced or you really love the DIGITAL drm-free then buy from gog, like i do with Zeus master of olympus and the only game i own on gog.
My opinion and the way of my ideology :)
Also one more note, i prefer the gog community by miles, its helpfull and interesting.
Now to your question: GOG needs alot by alot more AAA titles and better prices then steam.

GOG focuses on old games still (hance the name after all). Galaxy on drawing board looks interesting, that is for sure, but I don't see them even trying to put their feet into the AAA market. Yes, they have some, and they even have 0-day releases on some titles other than CD Projekt Red's stuff, but they still mostly deal in oldies and a few selected new adventure/RPG titles.
And I prefer them this way. GOG is the cozy little loveable shop you want to relax in next to the big-ass overbearing mall that Steam has become.

GOG is doing a fantastic job on getting those old titles to run on modern PCs, much better than what you usually get on Steam. But they definitely need to get more recent titles to gain the extra traction.

Gog has vastly superior customer service when it comes to getting questions answered about getting games to run, and response time is sometimes that same day. Out of about 100 games on gog, I've only ever had 4 not work right away, and one of those doesn't even work on Steam right away. Within days all of those games were installed and running fine on Windows 8.1 .

What got me into Steam was all the great bundles! If GOG manages to get some keys into some amazing publisher bundles it would be amazing for me, hope that day comes in the near future.

Just a little discussion i wanted to start, i think that the future will be either of two, GOG will "win" against steam or Steam will embrace the drm free format, as the last is quite unlikely i think at some point most people will use GOG as their main plataform, so what do you think it will take to make this happening? i find that the lack of a friend system is a big bummer for multiplayer gamers, also i think that achievements will be cool, cards i guess it will be cool but that is something too "steamy", a real improvement as for GOG galaxy is needed too, i dont know if it is just me but the client is a leach of my performance
