Well, that looks bad. I don't want ads first thing up if I open the library.
Even if that can be hidden it appears the list now takes twice the space per totle as currently... conform modern website makers that overhauls NEED to put half the info in the same space. Let's hope that's their "for webdesigners" look and there's a compact keeping it as is.
And as always if the best one hopes for is "hopefully I can keep it as is" the update, for me, is a failure.
Hopefully the promises advanced search is good though :/

Personally I don't like it, but I get it. The new UI isn't my cup of tea (especially the game pages, way too much going on) but I don't mind just getting used to it eventually. Basically all of the new features are useless to me but I still think its a good move since those are meeting demands/ trends.
I really don't play many online games these days so events and friend activity on the library page is a negative more than a positive. As long as they aren't shoved in my face (or ideally with the option to disable on an item-to-item or game-to-game basis) it'll be fine. A facelift is long overdue in general and I admit I just don't like change all that much. It's still a step in the right direction.
I love the subfolders idea others have mentioned though. I don't have my library fully organized as I don't feel like putting forth the effort, but at least for co-op games it would be nice to have better/ cleaner distinction between together vs competitive/ online vs/ local/ two player vs four player, etc. I'll definitely investigate the tags option, but so many games have their primary tags as generic categories (think "Action" or "Adventure") that it may end up being a similar amount of work. We'll see. I'm not a huge fan at the end of the day but I'm trying to stay optimistic.

Would be cool, if the categories you create in your library get saved to your account so you don't have to redo it every time you reinstall steam.

They are. The problem is that if you log in with a new install for some reason it isn't set to always download right then so you need to wait or restart Steam to see if you get lucky. Just don't touch categories until it does so and it will eventually happen.
Though personally I just backup the file so I don't have to worry about it, it is located in $STEAM/userdata/$UID/7/remote/sharedconfig.vdf where $STEAM is the Steam install directory and $UID is your numeric Steam user ID.
