I have two accounts on Steam and requested coupons in the Coupon Dumpster for each in order to buy the game twice. While they have this rule:

"Requesting Coupons for Alt-Accounts will get you BANNED!"

I requested the coupons through each account separately and intended to use the coupons on the accounts I requested them from. I did not request a coupon to use with a different alt account. When I asked them to point out the rule I broke, they just banned me. The fact I donated over 35 coupons to them recently was of no consequence to them.

Here's the explanation they give for the banning:

Reason 1. Requested coupons with main and alt account
Reason 2. Trying to be smart
Reason 3. Not reading the rules about profanity and insults "Do not give coupons to these guys. They are thieves, and make up rules as they go along."

1: I don't deny this, but at the time of this post, they have no specific rule against requesting a coupon from 2 accounts, only a rule against requesting a coupon for an alt account.

2: What? I guess they only want stupid people in their group?

3: Profanity? I made no such comments. As for being insulting, I'm sorry if the truth hurts, but they are nothing but thieves.

I've donated over a great deal of my coupons to them that i have no use for. i keep the ones i use. So i got no beef with them.

Pointing out a Fact > Why do you have 2 accounts to begin with? "just don't see the point in having more than one account, unless you're up to no good with them to get perks"

Also Hope you don't enter giveaways here with both those accounts to get an advantage.

With two accounts, you can get enough cards to craft a badge. It's often cheaper to buy two games for the cards, than to buy all the cards for the next badge level. I guess it only matters to people looking to increase their steam level.

I give some extra games to friends who in return sends me the cards back. They get free games, I get my cards, and I don't need a useless extra account.

For competitive games it's usual to have more than one account: one for ranked matches and competitive play, one for training or messing around (or sometimes for well-known players to mask who they are so they don't get pestered).

The rest are card gathering ones, trolls, scammers, forgotten passwords, or, in some cases, accounts to merge gem piles.

Coupon dumpster likes to use semantics to defend their position, and when someone uses semantics to defend thier side, coupon dumpster all ways wins.

I asked if it was ok if I could request coupons to buy games to giveaway for the group + have level restirctions, I was told yes by an actual officer/mod/admin that it was ok, so I requested coupons and bought the games.

I then go to make my giveaway, and then another different officer/mod/admin tells me it has to have no lvl restrictions.

So their own staff can't agree on everything.
^I would not have spent money if I couldn't set a level requirement, so to avoid a possible ban from one of the staff that did say no level requirements, I was forced to go aginst the other staff members response.

I'm not sure if it was you, but I remember talking to a member 'bout giveaways on SteamGifts. Either way, I apologize that you were given you two different sets of explanations. So I'm going to try and explain what happened here.

If I recall correctly, you wanted to create private giveaways. I then told you that it had to be an exclusive CD giveaway as per the rules. I believe I said that was the only condition that had to be met. To be quite honest, I don't have a full timeline for this but looking at our threads, this ended up as a discussion among the staff and we ultimately decided that all giveaways should not have a level restriction so that everyone has an equal chance to participate. As such, the rules in our Giveaway subforum reflected that decision. This might've happened before the change, so when asked to clarify, this become retroactive. But please don't quote me on this one because I'm not aware of all the events that had happened.

I'm not sure what this explanation can do for you now after all these months, but I hope this clears up the misunderstandings we've had. If you have any other concerns, please leave me a message!

You must be thinking of someone else that wanted to make a private or non-CD giveaway.

No worries. I'm happy to have given it regardless.

edit: and its understandable not every staff has put all the rules to memory.

So now you decided to also use alt account to register on SG so you don't have to write about your rule breaking from your main account?

This is the only account I have registered here.

Alternate accounts or multiple accounts are synonymous. I don't understand how much clearer it could be,

Apparently. It's not like they give any definition for "alt" so I still refute the term.

I've noticed that new users love to close the thread as soon as they're done discussing whatever they wanted to discuss and/or get a majority of opinions they do not like...

I won't close it. The mods here can do what they want.

If they say don't request a coupon for your alt that typically also means "don't try and circumvent the rule by getting a coupon for your alt by other means."

Again, to me every indication was they didn't want a request for a coupon that was to be used on a different account than the one requesting it. Isn't the idea to get the coupons out so they can be used? I really don't see how requesting a coupon from separate accounts with the intention of using them is such a big deal. The fact remains I gave them over 35 coupons and they banned me for asking for 2 and their loose interpretation of unclear rules.

You still wanted it despite it being cheaper on sale? You could have purchased on the alt account for more then 50% off

The coupon might have expired before the sale was over even if someone had one,The coupons in most cases do not stack...
I know you will argue this till death...rules for people like you will never work..
You claim that you did not break any rule because they did not make it clear enough enough when it said no alt accounts.

I alt account is any alternative account that you may have control over regardless of reason for using it.You should be politician you are good at changing thing to fit your argument.
In this your case you would just find a way to argue around it because no matter how clear they where if you think it is not clear you will claim the rule is not valid because it was not 100% clear.

Look i am no idiot but i also know i am not the brightest crayola in the box,but i still knew what the rule was implying even know it did not detail what is considered an alt account.

Actually, if you knew how new words get into dictionaries (at least in Croatia) you'd just allow everyone to invent whatever words they want and agree with them because now you'd at least know who did it and why xD

Yeah, but that's because of our butthurt linguists who can't stand the influx of all those English words :). However, they conveniently forget that most of these words are for things discovered/created by English speakers, and as far as I'm concerned, if you create something, you get to name it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I said how, not why; but when it comes to why, being a linguist myself, I can tell you you're half right.

No one is forgetting that some of the words haven't existed before they were discovered/created by English speakers (or speakers of any other language), it's about needing words that use the letters in our alphabet (meaning no q,w,y in case of English) and sound sets the native speakers are easily able to pronounce.
I know that English is "all the rage" now but think about all the words that you already normally use that were added to our language, also modified for our speakers.
Just think about this- some things were "discovered"/known by Aborigines when Australia was first discovered by Europeans and kangaroos were something Europeans have never seen before. Did they accept the use of the same set of sounds to name that animal? The same accent? Do we use the word "kangaroo" to name it?
Nope.
Why?
Because it was too difficult for them to pronounce it correctly/didn't really care about it so they modified it.
We use the word "klokan" as it contains the sounds familiar to our language. As far as I'm concerned there's nothing wrong with that, you need to use the phonology of your own language whenever possible to make the language as easy to use as possible for the native speakers because, hey, it's our language ;)
In Croatia you write what you pronounce and the other way around. If you wrote "e-mail" you'd have to pronounce it just like you wrote it- "emaij". Wouldn't that just be horrible?

If we went by your principle everyone would have to call Croatia Hrvatska as it's our country, we "invented it" and you gotta call it the way we named it. ;)
The same would, naturally, apply to every other country and every village, town, river.. anything that each country had the "ownership" of and/or has invented. Just imagine the hell you'd be going through having to learn to read and write Chinese words xD

Also, you forgot the most important thing- creating bigger differences between Serbian and Croatian.

As to how.. Well, if you don't know it's probably better that you don't xD

How interesting that I'd run into a linguist while making a linguistics-related comment :D (I hope you're not one of the butthurt ones tho :P)

My comment was mostly in the context of recent (20th-century-ish) technological/scientific/societal development. I have no doubt that many peoples discovered many things independently during their long histories, and accordingly named them in their own languages (including names that peoples gave to each other, like we call the Germans "Nijemci" - the mute ones). I accept that, as well as the various illogical things and artifacts of history that made their way into the language that we're now stuck with, for better or worse. Some things are too deeply ingrained to change.

However, what we're witnessing in recent years is the push to have Croatian replacements for every single foreign word, for what I suspect are mostly nationalist and political reasons (quite obviously so when one considers Serbian, which you remarked upon). Not to mention the hypocrisy that none of those people seem to be suggesting getting rid of the plethora of ostensibly Croatian words that have Greek or Latin origin.

You claim that the reasons are not using letters not in our alphabet and ease of pronunciation. Even so, you have to admit that's often not the case; otherwise, why replace "printer" with "pisač", "laptop" with "prijenosnik", etc.? Furthermore, we have no problem using non-Croatian Latin letters for proper nouns (e.g. New York), or pronouncing them for that matter--it's considered to be a part of literacy (barring of course exceptions such as non-Latin script, which can be transcribed, and languages with exceptional pronunciation such as those of the San people). I'm not claiming the reasons you stated aren't well intentioned, but I think honoring the principle that creators of things get to name them is more important, not the least because without them, the modern world we live in largely wouldn't exist, and that demands a measure of respect.

Your last remark intrigues me, do tell :D

Well now, aren't we intent on having a linguistics discussion? xD
Nah, don't worry, my field of study is English and I'm more than happy to bash those who invent basically needless new words (and I'll get to them later) into the ground xD

Hahahha, you're right, of course. I was merely trying to explain some of the valid reasoning behind it. But yeah, okolokućni domobran, (for those reading this that are not Croatians- okolokućni domobran would basically mean around-the-house-home-protector = dog) jokes still have merit xD

I understand that you were referring to recent developments, but they do make sense if we look to the past and the historical development of our language. Now, please keep in mind that I don't really know a lot about it; most of my info on Croatian comes from friends who study Croatian and history (both of which I'm not really good at xD ) so I'm not one to make claims and say "that is because of XY and that's final"; I'm basically just throwing our reasonable conclusions. Whatever it takes to defend the motherland and mother tongue! xD xD xD

As for the last remark...
I know for a fact that college professors from Zagreb like to go out for coffee and make up new words (that end up being a part of our language since... you know.. who writes dictionaries if not our most prominent linguists aka college professors) just for the hell of it xD

I know for a fact that college professors from Zagreb like to go out for coffee and make up new words

Ah...I remember it like it was yesterday. A certain professor who shall not be named khmLeoBudinkhm :D had just begun his lecture on threads, and dedicated the very beginning of the lecture to explaining why he chose a word nobody had ever heard of (dretva) as a Croatian but not really, since it came from German replacement. "I thought about a thread executing in a processor", he said, "and I had a vision of a shoemaker stitching a shoe, his thread going in, and out, and in, and out, and in again...where was I? Oh, right. And his thread, you see, it was no ordinary thread. It was a special thread, a very sturdy one. And I thought to myself, 'Why, this is just like a program executing on a computer!'.".* With that, he looked at us with a pleased look on his face, while we looked back bewildered.

Soon after, we heard about many other wondrous things, like spremnik and straničenje, to which we reacted similarly. But nothing could ever top the mighty dretva, which plagues the vocabularies of many generations of FER alums to this day.

* Quote may not be entirely accurate. Or at all, really. But the gist is there :D

And...well...you're not so bad yourself :P

In fact i have an alt account but by mistake as i made one some time ago that i forgot about,i made a ccount for Steam forgot password requested new one, then realized i had 2 accounts. Some also have alt accounts like me i have other games on it for others to play so when say my nephews come over we can have something to play since they do not have steam i have also slowly been adding games to the inventory so i can when they get steam have some games to play.

Since the OP had just registered here to make this thread, many (myself included) were thinking he registered with his alt account to rant but had also his "main" account registered here as well. It turns out he Apparently found out about SG while looking for places to trash-talk the group.

At the risk of sounding like a dick, they stole nothing from you. You gave them those coupons. Had you wanted something in return, you should have stated so with the trade offer you sent one of the mods - which of course would've seen the TO refused and the coupons remain with you.

It was your choice to try and sneak around one of their rules because you don't view alt accounts the same way. Unless you set up both those accounts at the very same time, same second, one of them is a secondary AKA alternate. There is no way around that.

You see what they did as wrong, that's fine...but what you've done with this post is just as bad. Defamation isn't cool.

Permalink

If I wanted to "sneak around" I would not have made it so obvious the accounts were linked by making the requests at the same time, with accounts that had similar names.

Defamation isn't cool.

I just warning people that their rules are unclear and what happened. If what I'm doing in this post is really defamation, let the mods remove it.

Permalink

Umm, no. Not "sneaking around" would have been making one request for two coupons and stating your intent to use the second on another account. You'd probably not have gotten the second coupon in that case, but you'd likely not have earned yourself a permaban either.

Your last sentence of the original post is the defamation. But clearly from this reply you know that, so if playing dumb to justify your actions is how you want to work this, go ahead.

We try not to treat our members as little kids so we don't spell out every possible scenario that could possible happen. You tried to request the same coupon twice. It doesn't matter if it is 2 separate accounts, you the user, tried to request the same coupon twice. That violates the rules.

Thanks for making us have to update the rules to account for people who cannot act like respectable adults.

If you want to argue semantics and "they never define what an alt account is", here's a good way to put it. "Alt" is short for alternate. Even if you use both equally, you are alternating between accounts. You have no leg to stand on here, and walking in linguistic circles only works when you actually have a good grasp on the words.

I read "Requesting Coupons for Alt-Accounts will get you BANNED!" as requesting a coupon for an alternative account to the one requesting it. Had I read it any other way, or thought there was a chance it meant something else, I would have asked beforehand. Instead of getting help after the requests were denied, I'm treated as a cheat when, in fact I did my best to contribute first. From my perspective, the rule was deliberately vague so the group act how ever the hell they wanted.

Just to clarify this: As everyone can see in the trashed threads, I did not in fact ban them for requesting with an alt account, I gave them a warning. What then happend was that the guy entered the groupchat and started ranting. After some back and forth I said "End of discussion", because there was no logic to be found in "my alt accounts are not alt accounts your semantic tricks don't work on me Coupon Dumpster". He went on, and also left a hateful entry on the group's comment page. THAT was ultimatively the reason he was banned.

And THAT is the reason 99% of the time. Not people violating the few rules we have, no, their ranting and insults as a followup after a warning and request denial.

Yes, I am harsh. But I think, in order to maintain the healthy atmosphere of our group, sometimes it is nessecary. I could, on the other hand, also list at least 5 recent examples of "mercyful acts" from our Staff toward rule violaters -- but where's the fun in that, right? ;)

So you are the one who started it all with you inadequate action. If what is stated here is true:

You requested a coupon from your alt for your alt.
I did not request a coupon for an alt account. The account that requested the coupon wanted the coupon.

then he "broke" your rules and by "broke" I mean he made a way to get outside your lands, somewhere where you do not have a control. And that's right, I do this all the time too.
Your reaction? Made up rules from thin air. That's very unprofessional move for me.
(BTW I just made up that everyone here has to tell me how much I'm great from now, everytime they read any of my posts. If you don't, I'll send you angry emoticon.)
What you should do? Accept that he got you, accept his request (form of "punishment") and to prevent any other similar case, change the rules.
To add something about ranting, it could have been prevented this way.

Edit: Forgot to add key part where you're breakdancing about rules of group that gets ton of coupons for FREE. Wouldn't say single word if you would lose two copies of expensive game that you bought yourself or something like that.

If you put it that way, then yes. BUT check this:

You requested a coupon from your alt for your alt.
I did not request a coupon for an alt account. The account that requested the coupon wanted the coupon.

He, in fact, may have requested from his alt but not for his "main" account, if you understand. Talking in numbers:
He requested for it from account 1, meaning to activate it on account 1, which means that didn't requested it for account 2, meaning that he didn't break any of rules above. Check this:

You requested a coupon from your alt (acc1) for your alt (acc2, because it's alt to acc1).
I did not request a coupon for an alt (acc2) account. The account that requested the coupon wanted the coupon (acc1).

And the rules made of thin air is the part when they don't admit they got rekt and trying to change rules all of sudden when request is already in progress, meaning no new rules should apply until end of it. (That's like you would eat somewhere and they raised up prices before you go, paying more than you should.)

How can you tell, you made up that rule?
Edit: don't bother to respond, I don't have time for this.

No matter how you try to twist and turn the facts, he still requested a second coupon for himself for his alternate account. That's against their rules and the fact that he used said alternate account to make the request doesn't make it any more okay.

He tried to be a smart-ass, thinking he found a loophole to go around the rule, and that's why he got a warning.

I'm not twisting anything, it's how it is, check above.
Thinking he found? Not thinking, he actually found it and as stated above in my post, that's reason why we have this discussion.

Yes, it is how it is. OP broke the rule by requesting a second coupon for his alternate account.

He requested a coupon from account #1 (for account #1), then he requested a coupon from account #2 (for account #2).

I don't know what part of this you don't understand.

Thinking he found? Not thinking, he actually found it and as stated above in my post, that's reason why we have this discussion

No, the reason we're having this discussion is because you're trying to defend the OP's rule-breaking by using fallacies.

He tried to argue the definition of an alternate account by claiming his second account isn't an alternate one, which makes no sense.

I don't have time for this.

Then stop wasting your time, and ours, with your nonsensical answers.

i get your point. i wish staff here would be even more strict when it comes to rude people, there's nothing worse than that (they do a great job anyway!).

There's a 2 days suspension for inappropriate behaviour though. People generally don't get suspended for being rude, but people being too excessive will get suspended (racial insults for example)

Yeah, but you could be racist and keep quiet about it and you would not get suspended. But being openly racist is rude.
So you could say that you actually get suspended for being rude (but of course this is something we could argue about for hours ^^)

you twisted the rules like a wormhole does with time...

also, this is not facebook... so you won't get +1 comments supporting your actions no matter what you did.

btw, you registered here 3 hours ago just to rant about this with people you don't even know!!!???

Right or wrong, I said my piece. The only reason I came here is because it's the first site that comes up outside steam when googling "Coupon Dumpster". I also saw that they originally promoted themselves here, so I thought it was as good a place as any to give my story.

Everybody here already said what I'm thinking, so I'll just say this instead; I dump my coupons in trashbot. Easier, faster, and no drama.

My genius solution for awhile now has been waiting until the coupons disappear :D

I don't see how any of these makes the title helpful. People give coupons to get rid of them. I think you wanted to say "Don't request coupons with 2 accounts".

I don't see the problem..if he want to buy 2 games...and 1 for each account...what is the problem?....I think if i give you coupons for free...and i want to use it before they expire...What is the problem giving 2 to a person ?..Dunno....at least tell the game and the coupon you were asking for...

This is my way of thinking of course...Rules are rules of course :p

I think it's more that they don't want people reselling them, if I remember right they've had that problem before. I donate them to the group so people don't have to pay in a trade for them, I'd be pissed if I found out someone was making money off them or just claiming them for card farming.

If CD didn't have that rule in place, I'd let my coupons expire.

He just wanted a second copy to farm cards on his alt account. He even said so himself in this thread.

If they give him 2, they have to turn down someone else because they don't have any more.
