Hi. I'm planning to get Dark Souls 3 on the winter sale. Just wanted to ask people who already played: it's real to play without gamepad? xD

That certainly had to take a great deal of dedication, considering the ass-backwards control scheme for keyboard on DS1. Plus IIRC, the in-game menus only show the controller buttons, meaning you have to memorise that 30 or so buttons to play.
(Then again, it is not something that alien to PC games. My old custom Baldur's Gate and Age of Empires controls used like 30-50 custom hotkeys.)

There's a UI mod to change the buttons to the according keys and also one to rebind, both on NexusMods AFAIR, but... well, I still suck at the game ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. And it's one helluva crappy port.

Using mouse and keyboard to play DS1 without the Mouse fix was a nightmare for me, the camera is moving too damn fast. Using a gamepad to play DS1 definitely helps a lot. Haven't played DS3 much, but its KB+M control scheme is not as bad as DS1. Though it's still better to use a gamepad for it.

I haven't played it but my firend who is one of the most dedicated fans of DS series says it should be played only with controller. But he's a dedicated fan as I said, so he might be overreacting :P

I personally have played DS3 but have only used a controller. I do know that playing with controller for the Dark Souls games is the best. I can however say that I did play DS2 with keyboard just fine (before I got my controller). I'm guessing that DS3 will be just fine too then.

I only play with controller, only tried mouse+keyboard for minutes, but as far as i know if you do that there is problems like too fast camera speed, but it should be decent to play without a controller at least.

Most games CAN be played with keyboard. It may just be alot harder ;->
Only had one so far where I waited to switch to a gamepad (Legend of Korra), but I haven't played DS ;-> Just try it out and if it doesn't work, search the people you know for someone you can lend a gamepad from.
PS4, XBOX should work without problems, PS3 works, but is quite a hassle to get it working ^^.

Oh, and thanks and bump^^.

As I understand it, it was easier with a controller because Dark Souls 1 on steam only showed the controller button prompts, even if you didn't have one.

It's basically just personal preference. if you don't even own a controller, you might be more comfortable sticking with keyboard. Maybe you could borrow a controller from a friend to try it both ways?

I have on the played the first one and I definitely recommend getting a controller for Dark Souls. I just couldn't play using a keyboard and mouse.

You should just buy a controller. I really enjoy so many games more since I also have the ability to use a gamepad.

I personally think DS3 is just more enjoyable with gamepad, but you should be fine with using keys+mouse and well able to beat ithe game.
Still, buy a gamepad if you can - in my opinion it's a mandatory purchase for gamers :P

I played ALL Dark Souls games with mouse and keyboard (I tried it with a controller but it felt awkward :). More than 1000 hours, heh.
And I must say Dark Souls 3 is best optimized for M+K (you don't need any extra tools for optimal control).

So you can go safely with DS3 if you prefer M+K.

I own Dark Souls 2 and after fixing the mouse input delay with a autohotkey script, I have to say it's far superior with KBM, if anything because you can move, switch items and move the camera all at the same time, which gives you a lot more options during combat and a better undestanding of your surroundings, which is basically impossible to achieve with a controller.
As for Dark Souls 3, I've only had the chance to play a little bit at a friend's house, but that one doesn't even need a fix because the KBM controls are really good. So yeah, obviously this is up to anyone's preference, but personally... KBM all the way.

only pheasants succumb to controllers, i played dark souls 1 and 2 with the mouse and keyboard with no problemos, not the best pvp player, but still managed to win enough times to feel like the mouse and keyboard are not hindering me in any way. youll need to learn to aim your attacks with the mouse.

I tried the first one with keyboard + mouse and got motion sick in less than a minute.... i could finish it with a controller.... and since that happened with the first, on the second one i didnt try with keyboard + mouse :p The only thing that i miss with the controller pad is when i have to zoom + aim, that's much better with the mouse
