VAC and Game Ban enabled games can either be bought for your own account, or gifted immediately. They can no longer be saved to your inventory for trading purposes. If you gift a game to someone who gets permanently banned, you won’t be able to gift that game again.

I guess VAC and Game Ban enabled games won't be gifted very much on SG anymore...

As long as they can be obtained thorugh retail keys, they could be gifted. Thats probably not the case of some valve games like CS:GO.

Unless it gets blown up by IGN and stuff.

I already own CS:GO and I cannot even buy CS:GO right now, both "keep for myself" and "gift to a friend" are greyed out. The messages below the game in cart says:
Your account already owns some of the above items, so you can’t purchase them again. You can purchase these items as a gift or adjust the contents of your cart to continue.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive can only be purchased for your own account at this time.

It cannot be purchased as a gift.

What???!!

You could try to get it from G2A or Kinguin. There's still lots of giftable copies in trader's inventory.

How is he the one not reading the main post? Someone you gifted to was VAC banned in the past and now you can't buy gift copies anymore. The only way for YOU to gift a copy is to buy a key off a 3rd party website and send it to your friend or get it from someone elses inventory.

I sent 2 copies to my other 2 alternate accounts and THEY ARE NOT VAC BANNED.
I want a real answer. It shows on support page the accounts I sent and there are only my 2 accounts.
Maybe they are working on it. For example I can buy L4D1 and L4D2 individually but I cannot buy L4D Bundle.

Because you can't purchase CS:GO as a copy anymore, but you can stil gift giftable copies already bought, until someone gets vac banned.

Yeah, you are not supossed to be able to purchase that because you already have all the Sub IDs in the bundle.
Bundles are custom-made for each account.

I tried putting other VAC enabled games like Insurgency and Garry's Mod in cart and the "Purchase as a gift" option isn't greyed out unlike CSGO. So it's either the rule only applies to CSGO (as in VAC enabled games) or someone I gifted CSGO to in the past got VAC banned in it. But then the guy above said he only gifted CSGO to his alts and they are not VAC banned hmm.

Ok, so there's obviously a problem here. The question is, who's going to make a viable alternative to steam?

GOG is very slowly working up to it, I think. It'll be a few years before they're ready to seriously compete though.

Permalink

MS and WinStore is the only one who can try.

GOG has no chance to become alternative without breaking their own rule, as it will lack way too many games, because most of those are made by people who wants DRM.

Uplay, Origin and Battle.net (for Activision).could also make to strong push, except companies behind those don't want to get burned trying to run their own pocket economies for differing reasons it seems. Hence no trading etc. there.

1) Buy 10 000 stolen credits cards for $1
2) Create (pay someone) script to create 10 000 steam accounts
3) Use each credit card to buy a game
4) Cheat!!

So what if you get banned? you lose nothing this way.

all for like $1 (seriously I don't know how stolen credit cards cost tho, probably bit more)

I was joking about stuff like this would be something we voted on during the summer sale. Vote on which intrusion you want Steam to force on the users. X% of users already do it, so let's make the rest follow suit.

A good way to circumvent this is to buy keys and get it from traders. You might have to pay more but if you are a hardcore cheater or a first class asshole, then what's money to you?

Well, they are trying to fix a problem, but this doesn't really fix it.
Cheaters could just buy and gift the games to a bunch of alt accounts right away and just wait until they need them. This will mostly hurt trading. Good thing keys are still free of most of this crap.

No, no. If your winner has VAC-ban, then it's fine to gift him game.

But it might be dangerous, because if he gets VACbanned in the game you gifted him, you'll be never able to gift this game anymore.

Comment has been collapsed.

It actually makes sense. If you continue reading:

"How does this affect gifting?

When a user is caught cheating, their Steam account is banned from playing multi-player on secured servers. This creates an incentive for people who cheat to stockpile copies of games on one account and to gift them to low value accounts where they can continue cheating. In response to this problem, Steam no longer allows users to purchase copies of VAC or Game Ban enabled games to their inventory. Additionally, if an account has directly gifted a game to other players who have been VAC or permanently Game Banned, then that account will lose the ability to gift that game.

We’ve taken these steps to ensure the integrity of the multi-player experience for those participating in online gaming communities. We understand that the restrictions on buying to inventory may be inconvenient for some legitimate users, but we believe that these steps will reduce the number of cheaters you’ll play against. And that’s important in having an online gaming experience that’s fair and enjoyable for everyone."

THIS, makes perfect sense. The move is similar to the Anti-cheat process for overwatch. You cheat in that game, you are permabanned. Cheaters buy a new copy as a means to bypass the ban, only to get banned again. Same process here.

All this means to us, it to be more diligent with our trades and GA's, and that's a cakewalk, so I wouldn't be too worried about this at all.
Even better, just don't trade it here, and gift the games to people you know are trustworthy.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Lots of people are buying games during -75% sale to sell them later for like -40%. Now they'll be unable to do that with all VAC games, because you can't store them.

What can be good for integrity of a game and its gamers, is shitty for traders.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Could also mean better discounts for rest. Possibly because of that sort of behaviour the discounts in store are worse than before.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Possibly, but Steam is just one of the stores where you can get Steam games/keys. And the others almost surely get the better prices by taking smaller cuts.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nah. Discounts aren't as great as they used to be because PC gamers showed they will buy games for more money.

Long time ago, when console games were like always for $60, Steam had USA releases for $40, even $30. But after Steam cured people's piracy, they upped prices to console ones, only leaving sales. And now they checked and it turns out even with smaller discounts people buy even more, so prices went up and until we all return to pirating they'll never come down.

Hey, Valve does have sane ideas once in a blue moon after all. They showed some signs when they locked CS:GO from gift purchasing during the summer sale, but now they finally realised that probably it would hurt the cheaters more if they can't just stock up on the games and continue like nothing happened.

So let me get this straight. At this time, I have more than 20 CS Complete in my inventory. If I trade/gift one of these to someone who gets VAC banned, I can do absolutely nothing with the rest?

Seems like the intention is to keep players from having multiple accounts with that specific game and cheating/doing something ilegal in those accounts.
I.E., if you gift a game to an alternate account and get banned in that second account, you will no longer be able to create a third account and gift the game to yourself again.
