I was going to say attached image

but Daggerfall makes everything look puny O_O
Might turn out to be another morrowind-alike case of "why have´nt i played this earlier (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ "

It's hard to get into Daggerfall if you have no previous attachment to that game. It's buggy, and most of the quests the game generates for you are not very fun. Sometimes the game can generate quests for you that you can win, and sometimes the game will hide your quest objective behind a hidden locked door (the dungeons in Daggerfall are massive, the smallest ones are roughly the same size as the largest ones in Morrowind, and the largest ones are 6 times as big).

Grand Theft Auto V isn't on this image, or any other game released after 2010, so I assume its an older image.

If my memory serves, the official statement in regards to map size in GTA V is roughly 100 square miles, so about 1/4 of Just Cause 2

But players estimate it at roughly 30 square miles. Which is still really really big (in particular if you factor in the fact that everything seem to be hand-placed), but not close to the original estimate.

Not really a "map" if it's randomly generated.

it is a map, you can play on it

The world in Witcher 3 is way smaller. It's realistic to walk across the entire world in Witcher 3 in a single sitting, it's not realistic to walk across the entire world of Daggerfall in a single day.

edit The estimated time to walk from one end of the Daggerfall map to the other is roughly 2 weeks (speed is a stat though, so higher speed->shorter time to walk across the world. So the two week estimate is based on an average speed stat)

62,394 miles squared is the Daggerfall map.
84.5 miles squared is the Witcher 3 map.

I played LOTRO for five years, and yes it's huge as Middle-Earth should be. :)

How does it compare in size to WoW?

Daggerfall, you take days, even weeks in real life time to go from point A to point B.

PD: games with procedural maps (Minecraft, No Man's Sky, Starbound, Cube World, etc) should not count since the map is not previously made and its not one map, but many

That happens with all procedural maps in games (ex: Minecraft's seeds, Starbound's planets). The thing is that in Daggerfall the only thing that changes is the position of buildings, dungeons, towns, etc, but it is still in the same map

Velen and Skellige from The Witcher 3 are pretty big, but to be honest, Skellige lacks some content.

Definitely "Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion".

That game is endless. Impossible to explore the whole map, considering that you can add dozens of galaxies with dozens of planet systems with dozens of planets.

Defenetly Minecraft, it's 3.6 Quadrillion km² big!

this is still 58 times bigger than Jupiter

Minecraft does not really have a set map though, it just randomly generated the terrain from a random seed. It has a max sizer set by the programmer though, so any game that randomly generates a map but lacks this max size is larger than Minecraft.

Daggerfall always has the same map.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

yea but that max size is 7000 times bigger than the earth and 58 times bigger than jupiter

Permalink

Which is still smaller than infinite.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

EVERY map must have an end! and if it would be infinite, the game would randomly generate the new areas

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The game would just keep randomly generating new areas, like Minecraft does up until you reach the map size limit of Minecraft. So no, not every map must have an end (unless you count the point where your machine dies and everything gets wiped, that would be the actual limit of the map, even if there is no theoretical limit).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

if you want to generate the whole minecraft world, you need about 2 pentabyte :D

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Which puts a practical, but not a theoretical limit. Find a more effective way of generating the world map (one that takes up less space on your computer) and you've got yourself a higher practical limit. Most randomly generated maps that I've seen in games are "simpler", thus will take up less space->larger maps. That makes Minecraft comparatively tiny.

Permalink

but those infinite maps are using the same structors after by time, in minectraft, every seed is equal

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Eh, not quite sure if I understand what you're saying, your sentence became a bit wonky.

If you're saying that they will start repeating themselves after a while, well that depends on how the randomly generated map works. Of course, if you're working with a limited amount of different tiles, and you're making an infinite map, then yes, there will be repeating portions, but that would happen with Minecraft as well, if it was allowed to go on forever. The fact of the matter still stands though that as Minecraft has a size limit, it's impossible for it to be larger than a map without a size limit.

If I remember correctly Fual had (or still have it) the biggest world in consoles games.
What even more. If not a little trick made by creator of this game Fuel would be on several blue-ray disc.
I'm recommending see this It explain something very interesting about this map :)
