(FINISHED) Join the dungeon-crawling Giveaway Adventure in Steam Dungeons! [70+ GAs]

Hello Steamgifters! A long time has passed (over a year!) since you crawled the dungeon full of steamgifts giveaways last time! And it is time to start the new - this time as big as never before.

"The Legend of Titans" quest has started!

All of us like playing games, and all of us like winning games. So, how about playing a game and winning games while playing?

  • Introduction

Game of sWords (now Steam Dungeons) was made specially for SteamGifts a little bit over 2 years ago and has gone a long way since then! A long time has passed since the last event, and there are tons of changes this time as well, including great variety of interactable objects, characters, improvements in balance and design - overall, the dungeons got even bigger and diverse! Steam Dungeons consists of quests (SG events) which start periodically: in each quest you have to explore huge dungeons while upgrading your hero, fighting monsters, finding new items and treasures and interacting with other players in different ways - all of that right in your browser.

There are many treasures (giveaways) hidden in the dungeon and anyone who finds them can join them!

A lot of giveaways have been contributed by the community members, and I would like to say a big Thank You to everyone who made a contribution! :)

And here is the topic of the first one, which started back in November 2 years ago.

  • You might want to read a little more about the game to succeed in it and there is some useful material you can put your eye on:

First of all, I highly recommend to visit sWords Library that has a lot of other useful information that will help you in the adventure

Secondly, you can read the tips I posted today in the Steam group announcement - many of them are not yet published in the library!

  • What's new in Steam Dungeons?

Lots of changes have been made since the previous quest to make the game more enjoyable!
You can see many of the changes listed here.

Note: The Game engine is not properly supported by Internet Explorer (you will encounter all kinds of nasty bugs there) and it is recommended to use one of the following browsers: Chrome (perfect), Opera (perfect) or Firefox (great, but the game works a tiny bit slower and sounds sometimes mess up a little).

Current Winners limits: Warriors:25, Wizards:25, Rogues:25.

Winners get access to all giveaways available in the current dungeon! (70+)

Everyone who finishes the game after the limit is reached (while it is still runnning) gets 1 random treasure as a consolation prize!

The game will last for 20 days. All giveaways end in about that time as well!

  • Time to start the Adventure!

EVERYONE is invited to play the game and search for treasures in the adventure! :)

The only requirement is that your Steam account should be more than 90 days old.

I finished the quest today. I don't really see a reason to post a wall of text about the good stuff, so I'll just point out a few thing which could/ should be improved:

  1. The amount of registered players for each class is pretty much the same, but it's not the case for the ratio of people who finished: currently it's 6 warriors, 12 wizards and 19 rogues. It could suggest that playing with a rogue is a significantly easier than with a warrior. I played as a warrior, but can’t say if my thesis is true, since haven’t played with any other class and can’t make an exact comparison myself
  2. Some descriptions for game features are not informative enough. There are things which can be learned only through trial and error, things which I learned by reading the thread, but much later than I would like to (example), things which I learned from the thread after finishing (like what is the invisibility scroll used for) and probably also things which I still don’t understand (even though I can’t think about a specific one at the moment)
  3. During a fight there should be one more option to choose from. Something like “do nothing”/ “surrender”/ “get killed”. Because there’s no such feature currently, 3 or 4 times during the game I’ve been in a really not pleasant scenario:
    • I had Handcuffs of war so I could not escape the battle
    • I was fighting an enemy which was regenerating health much faster that I could deal damage to it. Therefor I could not kill it
    • I had more than 600-1200HP and the enemy was dealing to me 10-40DMG per successful hit
    • I could not choose defend constantly because of the skill which regenerated my HP after a successful block
    • In this situation my only option was to constantly choose “Attack”. The enemy was regenerating and always close to full health and I was slowly taking damage. It took me 50ish clicks on this button until finally being killed. But the worst part is that I was heavily using up my melee weapon and each time this happened to me I would need to head to the armorer to get it fixed (of course after reviving).

Thank you for your feedback and remarks, pietruszka11!

  1. I also noticed that Rogues apparently made their progress easier, and already made some changes for the classes for the next quest.
  2. I'll try to make some descriptions more intuitive!
  3. This is indeed very unpleasant situation! Thank you for describing it, it surely needs to be dealt with.

I was waiting for the dungeon to close before posting to make sure I'm not spoiling anything for someone still playing but since the "reviews" have started coming in might as well go ahead :P

First of all lemme say I absolutely loved the game! Just a couple days in, that I finally started to grasp what I was supposed to be doing and how to go about it, and I was hooked like an addict! Really well done!
As a newly converted "dungeon junkie" I don't know what is new and whatnot to comment on how much it has improved so instead I'll just list a few suggestions/thoughts I had.

Level Design:

  • It was a well designed level however at many parts it felt too restricted. There were very few wide spaces where you could maneuver past enemies that might be blocking your progress or corridors where you got literally trapped between two enemies way past your ability without being able to backtrack far enough in either direction to make one of them despawn. Not that this shouldn't happen, but it'd be nice to have a few more open areas scattered around, makes it feel more like an actual building rather than a long set of corridors.
  • Staying with level design once you ventured relatively far from the beginning most places only had a single way to get to or leave. I dunno, it might be interesting to venture into a more "cyclical" dungeon if that makes any sense. Like you need to get to point B from point A and you can choose to take the short, risky way or the long, scenic and relatively safer way or something.
  • Loved the potion drop through the portal and the kind of social hub it created. There were times however where people were stuck somewhere in dire need of those or just simply out exploring that would have been nice to come by a random drop around you. Maybe consider a separate drop at a random location in a much lower frequency? Something like "An apprentice in sWords messed up the relocation spell and a supply drop will happen at LXY". It probably won't be very helpful to the majority of players if it's set to occur only a handful times a day but it definitely adds a bit of flavour and possibly a life jacket :P

Battle:

  • My experience is that of a rogue, which means a lot of ranged action ideally, however 90% of the time it ended as a brawl with nothing you can do about that. We do get an option for Approach so how about another command that lets you move away from the enemy? That way someone can play fully ranged if they so desire. Not that it should be without their downsides either. Maybe like every 7 meters/feet(dun remember which was used) you move behind your initial location there's a chance to get flanked by a second enemy(yes, a double encounter, that will be covered below :P )
  • To enhance the above suggestion maybe even add some consumable "trap items" we can set mid battle that can damage or restrain or somehow harm the enemy if we move away and they approach. Otherwise the move away option is kinda pointless since we'd just move 1 tile away and the enemy would just move in range again immediately.
  • It'd also be awesome if we could also inflict negative statuses on our opponents as they do to us. Sharp weapons like Arrows, Swords and Spears have a % to cause bleeding to the opponent, some staves can Curse, blunt weapons can Concuss, we can lace stuff to give them a poison affinity etc.
  • An upgradeable arrow capacity(although that feels like something that quite possibly is already in the game and I just never realised how to do). There were points in the game that it became incredibly hard to have a healthy arrow supply with Skeleton Archers/Medusas/Centaurs being near extinct while Thunder/Fire birds and Wyverns were everywhere.
  • And lastly....drumroll..... flanking! Sometimes there were battles that got quite lengthy or battles were you had another spawn right at the next tile. It'd be interesting(and possibly much more hardcore) if every x number of turns there was a chance to get flanked in an ongoing battle and have to take on both enemies at the same time.

Miscellaneous:

  • I know this is in the works already or was implemented after I finished but a Private Message system would be a game changer.
  • Personally I like to plan out stuff in advance in games such as these so information like the specifics of the skill tree, the amount of times the SoW can teach you a skill etc. would be nice to have beforehand. There a few instances when I run into it and neither of the choices offered was particularly useful to me but had the souls to spare so just went ahead and got a skill that didn't fit my general build before I even found out that this would end before the Dark Souls would or that picking x would lock you out of y. (Never even saw the option to get Climbing and still have no idea what was it that locked me out of it. Those two Llanas still haunt me! xD )
  • Also it'd be amazing if there was an option to reenter the dungeon in some capacity after you clear. Maybe in a state of permanent Invisibility and with trading/giving/treating disabled, just so you can go around and freely explore areas you may have missed before or didn't dare to explore at the time. Maybe even hide an Easter egg or two that only post-finish characters can see.

I think that's pretty much it. As I said at the start I did find it incredibly entertaining and absolutely loved it as a whole so don't be intimidated by the walltext above, those are quite minor in the grand picture!
Can't wait for the Christmas one!

Amazing feedback, Wolfedood. Thank you for such amazing ideas!
I appreciate big walls of texts when it comes to ideas and suggestions :)

By the way, negative status effects could already be inflicted with certain Skills, though most of them are exclusive to Patrons. I might introduce other ways of making weapons inflict status effects though.

Bug report:
Just got killed by an Efreet. I hit him first, and my weapon grants me % of damage dealt as HP.
On the one hand, I don't get 10% (134HP hit -> 4HP restored), on the other, I got killed (+ equipment destroyed) yet am not dead and still in the fight because those 4HP got added after my death.

My ID is 3678.

I will log out for the time being so you should see the current situation. Have fun bug-hunting. ;)

Thank you for the bug report! The effect order was indeed incorrect, HP will now get restored after your attack and before the enemy attack.

I now escaped and touched a toxic wall to suicide to avoid having another equipment destroyed. ;)

Huh... That's interesting.
I kinda wanna check it out, but at the same time I dunno.
What's it actually like? Is it a "NeoPets" type thing?

Well, there was no reason not to try! The game if free after all.
As for "NeoPets", I have no idea. Steam Dungeons is a multiplayer dungeon-crawling role-playing game, you can read more about it on the website.

Mostly just didn't wanna bother registering and such, didn't have all that much time to play anything today anyway.
Is it like Runescape? And oldschool SNES RPG? Text-based?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, it is partly text-based, though the latest addition brought many new graphical elements to add to the atmosphere :) Steam Dungeons is more like Dungeon Master, Legend of Grimrock and Might and Magic series - it is also relatively hardcore and requires some time to learn the game mechanics in order to succeed.

Bump and meow. =^.^=

Thanks for the fun! For me, I ran out of time. I didn't kill Steropes on the first try, and then fell into the cycle of losing equipment and not having enough potions or scrolls to survive long enough to kill him off.

My favourite thing was my stone turtle pet. When he maxed out at level 25 and left me I was sad. I like to think had he been with me in the battle against Steropes, we would have prevailed.

I also liked the purgatory / dream mechanisms, so when my soul and heart were stolen life was harder and things took much longer in the dungeon. I died so many times, I suppose I should have run away from more battles, but I hated losing so much XP each time.

Other than the above, I really appreciate and like the many developments you've put into the game. I feel old because I have a low number ID (26)!

I had the turtle for a while, level in the high teens, and then after a handful more fights, it was gone! I thought I kept an eye on its HP, but figured I must have missed some hard hits or something. But it leaves at level 25?! Wow, maybe I just missed the after battle message, and was not actually a terrible pet owner. Thanks.

Did you see an increase in your hp at that point? It gives a passive skill when it leaves that adds 50% hp.

Some time later I looked through my passives and saw a +50% HP skill. So it seems most likely it left me. It's nice to think I didn't let it die.

Can someone post a short walkthrough of the steps to reach the end (maybe later after all the giveaways finish)? I kept wandering around explored areas without finding anything new, so I gave up.

Did you find the cudgel for Arges?

Nope, I don't even know where to look for it. It said southern part of the floor (iirc), but I only see dead ends.

  • There was a sign that said "Cave of Arges" (or similar) at the tile to the right of it, the northern wall was breakable with an explosive vial.
  • Going up the path was a stairs down to an area with several doors that said they could be opened with an Axe. You could break them with an axe or a blunt weapon(you needed to have it equipped to break the doors)
  • There were 2 giant spiders behind each door, behind the easternmost spider of the final door, there was a sign with the code to open the left coded door.
  • Behind that door was the spider queen which gave you the cudgel when defeated.
  • Going back to Arges to get a code(?) for the "back door" in his cave(the east coded door)

After that it was pretty straightforward

  • Opening several doors using levers going back and forth in 2 paths since they opened a door in the other path.
  • Finding another code in the next area to open the door to Stereopes's house(keeper of the prison key)
  • He isn't there but the key is, you get teleported back to the main floor

Titan Prison

  • Down in the prison there was Charon on a crossroads, you needed to pay him several times since you needed to go in all directions to use some buttons to open all the cells.
  • Stereopes was in one of them, you needed to defeat him to get the heart
  • To get out you needed to find the secret passage in one of the cells(indicated with a sign)

Wasn't that needed after getting carthograph high enough, but it was useful in helping others once I was done.
I did it for the previous dungeons as well, so the template was there already.

Thanks again for the great event! Despite some frustration and lack of time at the end, I really enjoyed it. I preferred not being able to finish it to having an easier dungeon, simply because I would probably have lost interest very quickly if it wasn't challenging and difficult. :)

That's a great attitude! :) You still did very well considering it was your first time. Now that you are familiar with the game mechanics, next adventures shouldn't be as difficult for you! Besides, there will be some changes that will make an adventure a little bit easier next time - I don't want too many people to get frustrated and rage quit the game :p

Well, I hope it won't get too easy. I would ... bore-quit in that case, I think. :D

Well, I doubt I could ever make the game too easy, my hardcore spirit simply won't allow that :)

I think the current rage quitters were due to not noticing the concentration for checks and getting poison and bleeding from checks, on top of the toxic and spiked walls. So they were constantly dying.
