I've somehow managed to get a nice collection of hidden object games, however they all seem to have dark themes with demons and murders, not really suited for young kids. Anyone know of any purely hidden object games without the long, barely interesting stories that would be good for a young kid (5 yrs)?

My brother rabbit looks good, but maybe not straight forward enough, like a basic hidden object. The mzone games looks good, and are on sale now so I'll check them out, thanks.

All the HOGS I played so far included content not meant for kids, but there is a tag on steam that can help you find appropriate games for children

I remember "Humongous Entertainment" used to make lots of games which were very kid friendly...

But these games are veeeery old (like, made in the 90s mostly), so probably not what you want?

Cheers!

Hidden Folks

They are going to add DLC's to the base game with price increase, but if you buy the game now you will get them for free --> Source

I'm pleased to see this. I was rightly pissed when they added the DLC as a paid extra.

does it need to be a Video game for the 5 yrs old? you can also use books:

No, I guess it doesn't need to be a game, he's just into playing with the mouse after having been introduced to the phones and tablets for a while now. We forget there's a learning curve to using a mouse

Morphopolis is an amazing game. G-rated, which is another plus

Looks nice, not sure he'll get it though. Looking for something more straight forward like find an apple, a crow, etc, not so much a discovery type game. Like I mentioned above, he's only starting to learn to navigate with a mouse but I'll keep it in mind for later, thanks

Under Leaves perhaps?

Edit:
Paperbark
Sprout - short, but free kid-friendly puzzle

I'll add my vote for Hidden Folks and Hidden Paws + Mystery as well. While Paws can be complicated with the controls, it does have keybinding options now.

Catlateral Damage sandbox mode might be something to consider as well. It's not HO, but you play a cat and knock things over, so it's a straightforward concept. It entertained my kid-cousin for a while.

While not 'cute' or necessarily for kids. I found these pretty good. Straight to the point hidden object scenes and some puzzles. Very minimal story.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this yet - https://store.steampowered.com/app/524910/Hidden_Through_Time/

Your kid might like its map editor feature where he could use the game's assets to create his own hidden object maps and share them for other players to enjoy.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1246950/Where_in_the_World_is_Carmen_Sandiego/ - It's not out yet but you can wishlist it first...
...and play this Google Earth game with your kid: https://www.theverge.com/2019/3/13/18263754/google-earth-carmen-sandiego-where-in-the-world

Lost Words: Beyond the Page - Not a HOG (it's an adventure game) and it's not out on Steam yet but you can get it on Stadia now. Played the demo during the LudoNarraCon and was immensely impressed. Maybe you could take a look and see if it's something your kid might enjoy?

Adding: You can get Stadia for free for 2 months: https://stadia.google.com/

Seconding the games from Humongous as well. Those games made up a huge chunk of my childhood :) I think you can download some of their games for free on one of those abandonware websites. Not sure if the games would work with current systems though!

Whatever you do, do NOT buy Hidden Folks. Your kids will be staring at a bright white screen the entire time, which is terrible for their eyes. Also, the game is totally cheap ... some of the objects require clicking on trees and curtains to move them to access the hidden object. Terrible game.

I see they already mentioned the humongous games. Those are old, but really good. Children that young aren't going to care how old a game is.

Also, this one. It's beautiful. It teaches the child about the seasons and they have to click on different things to progress. You'd run through it in less than 10 minutes yourself. If he's learning to use a mouse, it's a perfect start and really cheap.

This just crossed my front page on steam. The Magic Storm

A hiddenobject game from 7-y.o. storyteller. The graphics are based on the works of a young artist.
