FF5 with 60 hours, think FF13 too. Might try a recuva tommorow, but i am afraid it won't work.

Turned off cloudsaves a long time ago (can't remember why but think there were some downsides).

[Edit] Still haven't managed to do a deepscan for the whole drive to look for possible other games that i may have forgot about, but atleast i found the savegame for FF5 and it worked. :)

Thanks, i will see if recuva finds anything else i will keep it mind.
Think FF13 i was in for 20 hours, that might be my limit to replay it from start, FF5 atleast i won't definitely start over.

Okay. If I'm not around, the link to the save set is actually floating around still a bit on its Steam forums as well. All saves before ch7 are blank slates made for emergency and strategy/build experimentation purposes.

I lost my Oblivion save at 50 hours in. I tried going back a couple of months ago (after 3 or so years), but I just couldn't anymore...

As Sighery said, you're just repeating what you did before. Even if you play it differently, it's just not fun anymore. It just gets boring, especially if you were that far in already and suddenly go back to the low level stuff.

Unfortunatly not. Of course I don't remember the details, but once I play, I'm constantly like "oh, yeah, it was like that" and then immediatly remember what's going to happen next etc. There are not a lot of games I can play more then once...

I replaced my hdd c:\ partition with a ssd drive and the old c:\paritition i formatted, so won't get much out of there.
I usually copy the program data and user folders to another partition, i even seen a square enix folder and the savegames for ff10 were there (though i had 30 minutes in that) but the folder for ff5 was empty, so maybe it's still recoverable if i copied it right.

Will keep that program in mind, thanks.

FFs should use Cloud though as backup, unless you manually disabled that feature. (Since the save files are super small, most normally don't.)

Yeah i had it disabled.

Formatting a hard drive or partition doesn't actually remove any data it just marks it as free space. Unless the area of the platter that was partitioned was rewritten to after the format or it was wiped using a utility such as Eraser it should still be recoverable.

unless it was a low level - then all you have done is marked the platters as usable for new writes - so should be able to recover the data - I know I have in the past

This is correct, but windows doesn't do low level formats. The only way to do it is through HD utilities such as WD diagnostics utilty etc. Even then, those usually only write all 1s or all 0s which is the equivalent to a single pass wipe. There is debate whether data may still be recoverable from single pass wipes.

Editing to add that personally I don't know how data can still be recovered from one single pass wipes but considering that the Department of Defense and the Navy each have specifications on 3 pass and 7 pass wipes I assume that it may be possible.

yeah - I use a data shredder if I need to do a proper wipe - but people would be amazed at what they haven't deleted when they throw that old pc out :) !

You should back up your saves just in case stuff like this happens. I use GameSave Manager to automatically upload my saves to Google Drive every 15 days.

Does it really backup every game though? yeah i should try that in the future.
Thought backing up the program data and user map would have been enough but guess not.

No, not all, but for most known AAA and indie games that have a known path for saves. It won't work for a lot of casuals, but then again, most casuals last 1-6 hours at best.

I had to do that with my Dreamcast, back in the day [non-integrated data storage being a rather new thing at that point, so I hadn't made it a priority to buy a memory card with the system (especially given how expensive the Dreamcast ones were)].
Plus side, between the shorter length of games back then [excluding outliers like Chrono Trigger] and the benefits of youth, completing a game within a couple of days was entirely feasible.
..negative side, completing a game within a couple of days was entirely feasible, and games were [by comparison] absurdly expensive to acquire back then. :P

Boy was I glad for first-party Nintendo games- those things always had/have crazy replayability. :D

Ive never lost the saves, but ive taken long enough breaks from a particular game that the save is utterly useless to me, as I have no idea whats going on, or even sometimes how to play the game anymore, and end up starting over from scratch.

It does, but had it disabled.

It's enabled now by default. If you ever see a game displaying a small loading percentage number next to it after you stop playing, it means it is syncing data to Cloud.

Steam's is like what you'd expect: terrible and buggy, but it can be considered as a relatively safe online storage in case of save loss. (Relatively. In some cases, having Cloud can result in save losses…)

Condolences!
Losing saves is like the worst tragedy that could happen to a gamer (besides the PC breaking down), it happened to me in the past with Football Manager 2010 (when I was playing it with key activation+disc check), I had something like 200 hours, so I know how it feels...

Honestly, I didn't even manage one of those long careers, the most I've done was winning the World Cup 2010 with Turkey (that didn't even qualify in real-life) on one save, and bringing a small club from the Italian "Serie C2" (4th division) to winning "Serie A" in 5 years in another.
Most of the time was spent on tactics and player analysis...

Lost a bunch of saved games not long ago since my SSD went rip, and from the looks of it most of the saved files were archived in that unit, while some other saved files were archived in my HDD.

For example, i lost my saved games from dark souls 2 and 3 but kept save files from dark souls 1. I can imagine the amount of saved files i lost from that, probably metal gear 5, mad max, bethesda games such as skyrim/fallout 4 and a bunch of other games. Not even sure if steam cloud did anything tbh.

I don't mind loosing save files from dark souls, it gives me a reason to replay the games with new classes and new game tactics. But games that have large areas to explore and the likes are kinda depressing, even more depressing is knowing i hardly made any progress in metal gear and spent alot of time grinding stuff within the game, plus exploring alot of things in the map. I've started skyrim like 5 times now and still haven't finished the main questline once, i have hopes that i will one day play it all from start to finish and not get lured away into exploring other places of the map.

I know that feeling with FFIX on disc 3. It's still one of only two I've never finished because of that, which is a shame because it was on the fast track to becoming my favorite one, but I've still never gotten over it.

If you use Windows 7 you can use the previous versions feature.

I recovered several important files this way, especially when I deleted a file by mistake. One more reason to not upgrade to 8.1/10 :)

Edit: if you use Win 8.1 or 10 you can try with ShadowExplorer.

I'm sorry :( This happened to me once with Fable Anniversary. I was only about 4 hours into the game but I was pissed enough that I quit entirely. All I did was try to reload a save and it decided to overwrite it by starting a new game. I can't imagine how angry you are for losing so many hours, I hope you can get your saves back
