Its not RTS, its turn-based. But I enjoy it quite a bit, so I'd say yea. Note that GOTY edition contains all the DLC, EXCEPT http://store.steampowered.com/sub/11092/. Which is pretty annoying, but whatever it's 75% off right now. So much freaking DLC for this game...

The DLC's aren't over for Civ 5. Another DLC is coming out in a few months. I'm just going to wait until they cram all their damn DLC's into a revised GOTY pack and then buy it. I got other games to keep me busy till then.

Only buy a game if it is your style, not if it is on sale.
I learned that trough mistakes.
If you like RTS you can search more about the game, see some trailes, critic reviews, user reviews and ask some friends if they have it.
If don't,just don't get it,it won't worth it for you.

I don't think we can tell you if you will enjoy it or not, especially if you have never played any strategy game (by the way, it is not a RTS but a TBS: Turn-Based Strategy).
My advice? There is a demo, give it a try and see by yourself if you like it. :)

Denmark and Vikings was good. Reminded me of the proper Civ II scenarios. Polynesia was underwhelming.

Civ has long been known to be one of the most popular turn based strategy games available, even spawning many lookalikes and sequels.

How many games can you think of that have made it to this many iterations that are still hitting top seller lists every time they're released?

Understand, though, this game can be a bit complicated at first (even though this is nothing compared to how it was back in the civ 2 days. ui is quite a bit more streamlined now)

This is not command and conquer, this is not starcraft. Do not expect high action fast paced games. This is a game about thinking, taking your time between turns, and ultimately having a grand strategy that is better than you opponents. With the game options set correctly and without tech rushing it is fully feasible to have a single round of this game last for a weeks or even a month.

(My vote is yes, this is probably one of the best deals on steam atm, due to damn near infinite replay-ability. However, i also enjoy Crusader Kings and the like. I have a feeling most kids won't like this one as it will move a bit too slow for them)

I loved Civ 1-3, Civ4 seemed to change too much. But I'll give Civ5 a chance since It has more content than 4 and the same price.

Understand however, this one is probably the biggest leap in new game mechanics they've ever brought out. I happen to like many of the new mechanics such as hex based maps, city states, and a completely revamped diplomacy section. I do know that the most devoted civ player i ever met (a history teacher that was the father of a girl i dated for a few years) wasn't exactly happy about some of the changes, though.

This iteration is truly a matter of taste. Regardless, the core mechanics are still there, and its incredibly well polished, as most Sid Meier games are. I wish you good luck.

I played FreeCiv when I had a Ubuntu computer. Is this just as fun? It looks much nicer.

FreeCiv is basically any of the civ games to a tee. (Hearkens mostly to Civ2) They haven't changed the general idea of the games much from 1-5, just the core mechanics behind the game itself. If you enjoyed FreeCiv, this will be a breath of fresh air to you.

Only thing missing in my opinion, is Leonard Nimoy voiceovers.

Thats why i play with the roomies. Tbh, this isn't something you should play with random public pick up games, as in order to experience a whole game, you need to have people around who actually care about the enjoyment factor, not just how they can roflstomp noobs. Not to mention a good length game you simply wont finish in one night. Good luck finding those pubbies again tomorrow, especially if you were winning.

Now, playing with friends who i consider intelligent people, ive come up with some mighty cool stories about how the earth could have been, as opposed to what we have today. Play with friends, not douche bags.

If you haven't played any strategy games I would suggest not going for any Civ game to begin.

They can be pretty complex and might not be so intuitive.

It's pretty good. There are better strategy games out there though (imo)

For the price it is now you will probably get plenty of value out of it though, so go for it! :)

Is it a question while talking about Sid Meier game?

Since it is turnbased and you can't even tell if strategy is your genre it's hard to predict. Be aware that this is a slow and complex game which requires some thinking and is certainly not everyone's taste. But since the Civilization series is pretty good this is your chance to find out.

Another good series in this genre(if you would consider it the same genre),which is a little easier to get in and is also more mainstream would be the Total War series.

Civ 5 is worse than Civ4 in every way apart from graffix. Disregard the 5 sale, get 4 for half off.

I strongly advise you to play the demo first. Civilization definitely isn't for everyone. Even if you are a fan of strategy games, the extreme slow pace of Civ might not be for you.

if you are new to civ, you may enjoy more civ 5 , as its more streamlined and easy to understand for newcomers. If you played a civ before, you may have more fun with civ 4 (i do).

here's a chart if you are confused when getting the dlc, if you want all dlc, you need to get goty+koreand&wonders pack
DLC and PRICE CHART

also remember there's a new dlc coming, seems like a big one with religion, spies, and new units etc.

I've been waiting for the Civ discount day to pick up Civ IV complete and possibly also Civ III. Both games I played for countless hours in the past but don't own on Steam. Civ III was great and Civ VI became great with Beyond the Sword expansion. I'm a little disappointed that the 75% off is not for the full Civ franchise. Still, great deals all around and $12:49 for Civ V GOTY is a gret deal for people who have been on the fence about this game.

While I've only played Civilization IV, I've heard V is a downgrade in some aspects. I'm actually pretty tempted to purchase it myself, but I've already stretched my limit on how much I should be buying lately... heh.

If you're a newbie to the series, though, there's nothing wrong with giving this a go. I'm sure it's just as enjoying as Civ IV.
