Ghost Master is a pretty cool (Although old) game where you control ghosts and you goal is to scare people out of their homes. It's pretty awesome.

All of the Monkey Island and Sam & Max games are under a buck - if you own a bunch, the bundle price is a definitely pick-me-up-in-the-Summer-Sale price point. Telltale collection

Bit Blaster XL
Both are addicting high score games.

Also Surfasaurus sounds to fun to pass up lol

  • Rusty Lake games, which are creepy Escape The Rooms by the same person who did the Cube Escape series. Rusty Lake Hotel is $0.99. Rusty Lake: Roots is $1.49. If you get the bundle they are $2.11 or about $1.05 a pop. I highly recommend looking into the nine or ten free Cube Escape games. They're well worth the time.
  • Tick Tock Isle is a neat little point-and-click style adventure by a dev who's work I've really enjoyed in the past. It is $0.49.
  • Spaceport Hope isn't the prettiest Metroidvania but its a lot of fun and crams in a lot of stuff for just a couple bucks. $0.49.
  • If you want a Mario 2 sort of game, there's Curse of the Crescent Isle DX for $0.49.
  • Sinless is an inexpensive Point And Click Visual Novel set in a cyberpunk world. My only complaint is that it feels like it ends in the first half or even the prologue of a much larger story.
  • Polarity is a dirt cheap Portal-ish 3D Puzzle Platformer. $0.69 for a very good 3D Puzzle-Platformer is not bad, hm?
  • Refunct is an amazing little tech-demo of a parkour game. Well worth $0.98.
  • Breath of Death VII and Cthulhu Saves the World are a pair of good oldschool style JRPGs. If BoD is like Dragon Warrior, CStW leans towards Earthbound.
  • If you want a lot of games but don't have that much money there is the Basement Collection for $0.99. Weird games but overall pretty fun.
  • Closure is $0.99 for a strange little puzzle-platformer where light reveals the stage and you can pass through the shadows it casts.
  • Similarly to Basement Collection there is Retro Game Crunch for $0.99. Different games and opinions vary on which one's best but they can occupy a lot of time for a pittance.
  • I played Divide By Sheep or something similar on either the Android or the web. I forget which but its if frustrating at times puzzle game. $0.99
  • Rex Rocket Is a nice little Metroidvania game for $0.99.
  • Xeodrifter and Mutant Mudds are both a buck.
  • Aztaka isn't the smoothest or nicest action-rpg but its pretty unique.
  • Shipwreck isn't exactly a dollar but it is $1.01 for a nice little GB Zelda-like game.

Unsure if I should but recommend with a "but":
If you want a cheap but decent JRPG-style game, there's the two Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness games for $0.95
Wanda - A Beautiful Apocalypse is $0.99. It feels like it wants to be like To The Moon with longer (and possibly more) puzzles but the story pantomimed instead of stated, but the cutscenes feel a bit too long and there's no way to skip them if you reload or screwed up a puzzle.
Lifeline is also $0.99. It's a nice CYOA sort of game but the original Android version had a wait aspect and I'm not sure if that carried over to the PC version.

Shame that many other games I'd suggest are around $1.49 instead of $1.

It is kind of a crap move that Penny Arcade 3 & 4 are on sale so cheap, but there is no sale at all on 1 & 2. I've had 1 on my wishlist since I already own 3 & 4. I am really curious about your 1.50 list now.

Are 1 and 2 even on Steam? I wouldn't recommend them. The first two games are terrible.

As for the 1.50 list maybe later. It's almost dinner and unless the OP says its okay I'd make another thread since this is specifically for under a dollar. To me Shipwreck and the Rusty Lake bundle barely fit in the request.

Yep, they are 8 bucks each or 12 for a bundle with both. Good to know they aren't any good. I will look for your list later, thank you.

The Breath of Death VII/Cthulhu Saves the World double-pack is under a buck and generally pretty worthwhile. Short little 8/16-bit RPGs, with a sense of humor and way too many random encounters.

Also, Mystery Chronicles: One Way Heroics isn't as good as the original One Way Heroics, nor does it really feel like a Mystery Dungeon game, but it does have bonus classes such as Wanderer (based on Shiren the Wanderer) and Student (based on Makoto/Komaru Naegi from the Danganronpa games). It's also only 99c, or 89c if you already own the original One Way Heroics.

Here's some I haven't seen listed yet.

I haven't tried them yet, but I'm going to give them a shot:
inSych (handmade cardboard game)
Flat Path
Flip
Disoriented (kind of Escher like)
Dreamcage Escape

Tried and recommended:
Faerie Solitaire (SG had a thing with this like Fortix iirc. Great game)
Puzzle Agent
Lilly Looking Through
AaAaAA!!! - A Reckless Disregard for Gravity
Hocus
Hook
Obulis
It's Spring Again (nice kids game)
InfiniPicross (Picross/Nonograms. sadly no picture puzzles, just randomly generated)
Zen Bound 2
Windosill
Chips Challenge (need I say more?! The pack with 1&2 is about $1 too)
Edge
Rush
Abandoned
The Silent Age
Hare In The Hat
Lexica
Unium
Quell (all three are also in a pack for $1.50)
Quell Memento
Quell Reflect
Puzzler World (great variety of puzzle types)
Puzzler World 2
Deponia (great series <3)
Shadowgate (loved this on NES)
DejaVu (same as Shadowgate)
Poker Night At The Inventory
Poker Night 2
Fortix (Best Quix clone ever?)
Fortix 2
The Dream Machine ch 1&2 (beautiful/creepy handmade cardboard/clay game. Finally released the last chapter after 5 or so years. Worth the wait though!)

This one deserves special mention. Actually rips off LEGO brand pieces, and is somehow not removed yet:
RoboMatch

EDIT: I'm actually amazed at how many great games there are for less than $1 :D

Lego patent on the bricks is expired for some years now, so no reason to remove a game with rip off bricks.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I didn't know the patent had expired. But wouldn't that just be the basic original bricks? The game uses more recent bricks and pieces from the Technics line.
Not that I don't believe you, but if the patent is expired, I wonder why there are almost no other companies making LEGO style bricks. LEGO is $$$$ so you'd think there would be hundreds of companies getting in on that market.

Pid
I can really recommend this. It's beautiful, has a great kind of hover mechanic and have I mentioned that it's beautiful?
Only problem so far I have with it 10 hours in is that some bosses are a little bit frustrating and that at one point it dropped the built up tension with a maze. A friggin maze.

But.... get it. At that price point you can't do anything wrong if you don't despise platformers. And if you do there are still some good puzzles sprinkled in.
