I'm reading Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Everyone should read this book.

"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."
Although I agree with you that it is one of those books everyone should read, just not for the reasons you hold dear :P

I'm reading: Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth, from one of my favourite writers JRR Tolkien.
The book tells lots of stories from the three ages, including some chapters that explains what happened with the felloship of the ring after Sauron's Dead.
If you like Tolkien's universe this is a must read for you

The Future of the Mind: The Scientific Quest to Understand, Enhance, and Empower the Mind by Michio Kaku. But the last one I finished was A Clash of Kings, got enough of A Song of Ice and Fire for a while so I picked out something else instead.

I'm reading Tuf Voyaging. I read one of the stories (A Beast for Norn) 30 years ago and just recently found out that Tuf had other adventures too. Also that the author is G.R.R. Martin!
I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Hadn't had some good ol' classic sci-fi for a while.

there are constantly threads for music, movies, and games, but so little love for the written word!
I'm currently reading Uprooted by Naomi Novak. I thoroughly enjoy her Temeraire series and I highly recommend it to anyone who is remotely interested in historical fiction (even if you don't it's worth looking into).
update: Now reading "Blood and Iron" by a local author
