For those who aren't familiar with The Forest, it's an open world FPS survival horror game with some serious graphics to boot. It was greenlit on Steam last June and will be getting an alpha release on May 22nd.

it can be a coop game and it plans to have MP after alpha release

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm not sure how I feel about that. I mean, I like MP games, and I've played "horror" games that incorporate MP like L4D2, KF, and RE5. However, introducing MP into a horror game kinda destroy the horror element in it to some extent.

What Marketing material? There is no sign of that, so far they only and only show limited info and very much of gameplay, they are not in it for the money, this is one of the best indie games ive ever witnessed, the best looking one. I seriously dont understand you foreigners, thinking negativly about games, thinking about all the financal, bugs, developments or anything and not paying attention to how a good game is and to just get down with it and play. Always looking for a reason to pick on it like a disliking bully giving a slight little bad early review...

No, ive see this all the time from almost everyone, its rare to see happy non complaining gamers. The game will come out without problems and the list of people like you, will be small and may even shrink and shrink, almost everyone will love it, you'l see, i have faith for obvious shown good reasons.

While the graphics look decent this genre has been milked to death. I can understand some of you always wanted to be bear grylls, spear fish, build palisades whole sections at a time in the forest and have poorly designed hand monsters destroy them(lmao). I'v done that in minecraft, terraria, don't starve and a few others i don't care to remember. If i wanted to do this crap for the 1000th time i'd just buy Rust, at least that one has multiplayer. So like i said, no thanks.

Their much more that decent, you will never see anything as realisticly beautifull nature as this for a long time :) ! Who cares about the genre, you gotta care about the game! Actualy i am not looking forward for the grilling or the fishing but building, fighting, exploring horifying places, im all in for that :) !Their not poorly, surely you can admit that such designs like these have never been anywhere else seen, their real walking horrors, pluss most of them are humanish anyway :). MineCraft, Terraria, Starve are nothing comparable to this. Those games suck, their blocky, except for Minecraft, not in first person, their too vaast expanded in crafting stuff while Forest has a nicely limited array of things to craft, this game is the supreme survival buiz and it will blow those three away, far, far away :) Yeah, Rust is fine too but still, this is the best and you can bet your ass it will be all worth it, for the 1000th time youve done it :) but meh, dont care if you dont want it, you wont know what youre going to miss :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So they suck because you don't like the way the graphics look and this game will be the best game ever because you think it's graphics look fantastic. You know you just lost any credibility you might have had just based on that statement right? You're also saying having diversity is bad lol...

Yeah, of course they've not been seen anywhere else, they're bad, other people had more imagination and came up with better creature designs, hell even Terraria's Crimson biome is more "horrifying" and better designed. Yeah those places are sooo scary not like all the other scary places you see in all them horror games on steam. Why even bother building anything if the game's enemies can either jump over and/or just ram through.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, they dont exaclty suck for their graphics, altough games with these graphics have been too many, too many blocks... but compared to The Forest, i guess they just rightyfully may suck for sure. And the Forest is not all about the graphics ofcourse, its just one of its best things that beats the other games graphics. I dont care for credibility, youre just one guy.
Okay, Terraia has scary places but their ugly and less scary due to that and the viewpoint but the creatures, they cant be complained about, yes, sure. No, please, there are far worse places in the scary department than Terraria so dont think its a good competitor in that. Well surely you will have ways of stopping them from breaking the walls and think of the traps you can build where they will jump on from wall jumping :) if they jump over walls to begin with, ever tought they may have ladders, maybe? You cant deny that indestructable walls would be a thing to hate.

I'm not aware of any other survival horror sandbox games. The Forest looks like it blends atmosphere and open world gameplay, something I personally have never seen.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

All it does, judging by what i see in the trailer, is take some of the sandbox survival elements that you see in games like Minecraft, Terraria, Rust, etc and add jump-scare crap that you see in every other horror game on steam. It's like a watered down Don't Starve in a first person 3D perspective.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ouch. I don't see jump scares and it certainly doesn't look like a watered down Don't Starve :S Some real effort has been put into this game, as seen in the animations and graphical quality. Even the small touches like the wriggling fish and the flying geese show me that they aren't cutting corners (like many other open world games). I think it's quite ambitious for an indie studio and that's why I decided to share it.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, i'm talking about the survival element of don't starve, not the graphics, the way you build stuff in this game just looks off and immersion breaking. I already admitted above that visually it looks good. Also i'm not trying to bash the game, i just gave my honest opinion, i don't find anything about it interesting. I wish them all the luck in the world with it.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I never said you were trying to bash it, but I did address that you said it was like "every other horror game on Steam." I'm simply trying to show you why I disagreed with that point. It's not for everyone, so I understand why you don't like it.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah when i stated the first opinion i didn't see it had building stuff in it, i went into more detail in my replies. But again, from my point of view that only works against it as well because horror games are all about the immersion and for me, the way you build things in this game throws all that out the window.

Rust is in trouble? Dude, Solo survival sucks. 2 weeks max and you will moan to the developers to give multiplayer.

1 decade ago

Note: It's survival horror. Multiplayer and horror don't work well together.

I only say that Rust might be in trouble because looking at the similarities between the games, like cutting down trees, The Forest does it better IMO.

Ok, replace "sandbox crap (in this case - survival horror sandbox crap" as "genre milked to death". I seriously can't get it how to attract people around this boring genre adding some zombie-like monsters and ludicrous centipedes. Speaking about craft - so many Minecraft(, Terraria, Rust and so on games) rip-offs, so there is no need in games in such genre. It's like slender-games - they are all casual, boring and not scary.

Good atmosphere and immersion, none of the games you mentioned have it

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Did you play it? Did you feel that you mentioned? And moreover, immersion in the crafting-game with zombies and centipedes? Are you serious? Tell me also about an interesting plot here, lol. The only three games that have perfect immersion are Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, The Scratches and Penumbra (1st part). First game is based on Lovecraft's world (so it has its own author's creatures), in the second we don't have any ridiculous creatures at all, and in the third - some sorf of weird wolves and giant worm. But they do have an interesting plot, atmosphere and immersion (that's why they are adventures). There i can't tell you anything about immersion when i see some creepy stuff about zombies/centipedes/monsters that simply want to kill you (because you can't invent more in survival genre) with little plot development.

last I heard about a month ago is the early access is coming for 14.99. ive been following this game since summer of last year and have really been holding off for this rather than anything else, so I don't feel "milked" out like some ppl see it as hopefully this game gets the recognition it deserves if it comes out great

This person alsmost perfectly described my thoughts when i heared about this game a while ago.

*Ogdred 8hours 36mins ago says:

You get this perfect base for a survival game... but then you throw in these random savage/zombie things and that kinda take the realistic out of the game. The monsters ruin the idea that this is possible to happen, because there is the possability to be stranded somewhere or the get lost in the wilderness but I dont think that me getting lost will make savages reincarnate and start attacking.

Though the game looks really nice.*

The genre is survival horror, not just survival lol. I personally like the fact that they're doing more than just creating a survival sandbox game. There's some originality with The Forest and what looks to be a loose story based around a plane crash.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah but that's the problem i'm having with this game, i think i would've liked it more if they didn't decide to throw in some random monster-like creatures.
When i first heared about this game it was just set on an island with no monsters at all, only survival.

1 decade ago
Permalink

So you mean you would prefer it to just be about fishing and hunting etc?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, there are already plenty of 'survival games with scary monsters'
Using not so obvious, more subtile scary things would've been fine for me too if they wanted to do that, but to me this feels like too much of the same again.
