Edit: some good suggestions, and some good morality lessons so far. Keep it coming, folks

So, my son really enjoys watching me play FPS games, and wants to play himself.
He's played Team Fortress, CG:GO, F.E.A.R., Portal, Batman Arkham Asylum and possibly one or two others

But, (a) the games are a bit too mature for him, and (b) he's just not that good; he's still barely able to play with two hands. He only really uses one finger for moving. He takes his hand off the mouse to hit space so he can jump. etc. etc.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a game with a similar play style that is a lot easier (and hopefully not as scary / gory)

I was thinking of maybe starting him on something easier.
I have Hitman (2-5) Thief (1&2) and Max Payne (1&2) (apart from the acid scenes, which I'd do for him, the content is fine), which I think are good to start with. Or maybe Alice: The Madness Returns?

Or is there another FPS y'all would recommend?
I'm fairly liberal on content, and he won't notice the story whatsoever, though I would prefer it if it wasn't creepy or gory. But it's got to be extremely forgiving.

+1 for PvZ: Garden Warfare/Garden Warfare 2.

It's a shooter (TPS) but it's still kid friendly and not too violent, which is my main concern for kids these days...

My nephew is 6 and I've noticed that he REALLY emulates things he sees on YouTube and in video games, which makes me sad because I enjoyed playing "older" games with him. Some kids mature at different rates though, your son could be much more mature than my nephew.

Alright, there is this game called "Superhot" and basically the time moves when you move.
I don't know any other good slow paced fps games unfortunately... i mean Slime rancher could be up the list but it's not really a basic fps
Anyways good luck finding something for your son!

I think Team Fortress 2 and Counter Strike using the low violence comand are good. You need to mute everyone in the server, haha.

Kids are really impressionable, he's probably into FPS because he's seen you playing them or heard about them being cool. In my day the cool games were platformers and beat em ups.

My advice is to give him Sonic/Mario/Rayman something like that, I fucking loved those as a kid(Lion King was the hardest game ever), we used to go in school and show off about progress. Lemmings was another. Then there was Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2 doing the rounds! Tomb Raider and Resident Evil came out when I was in my final year of Primary School so I was 11? I remember them causing a bit of a stir when a few lads got hold of copies off brothers and such. That was with blocky, horrible frame rate graphics. I can't begin to imagine what playing Hitman must be like nowadays, I think the parents back then would have exploded.

The age of 7 is still a very impresionistic age. Why the FUCK are you allowing him to play super violent games? What the HELL is WRONG with you?! Give hi something like Minecraft or Terraria. Games that aren't super violent but are still decent for a 7 year old.

Someone should teach you how to be a good and caring parent. Not one that teaches the morals of violence to a child. That's like bringing up the child in a neo-nazi household. He'll learn bad values.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I am teaching him morals. At this point, he certainly knows the difference between fantasy and reality, and he knows that the games are not real.

Permalink

Yes but that doesn't excuse the fact that he will have a 50% chance of being a violent offender when he gets older.

Try teaching him better morals from things like books. You DO remember what books are, don't you?

Why don't you tell us what violent games were people playing some hundred years ago when there was a lot more violence than now.
All this "don't let your kid play violent games cause he'll become a violent person" makes me sick...

I would tell, but the most violent game that was available when I was 7, and I know I'll show my age, was probably Rampage.

No, I was talking about the times when computers and video games didn't even existed.
The world was full of violence without them. The thing is that your kid won't grow up violent because of the games he played. All you have to do as a parent is to make sure you give him a good education whether if he's playing video games or not.

There's no real evidence to support this claim. You can teach someone social values through media, but some things are quite hard-coded into us, like an understanding of what violence means. If you expose your kid to a lost of racist media, your kid is likely to grow up being a racist, but if you expose your kid to a lot of violent media, your kid is not likely to grow up being violent.

That's just a lie. Studies have shown that violent games don't make children more aggressive or violent.

There are a lot more articles about it, I just gave two examples. Either educate yourself on the issue or don't talk.

BHTrellis188, while I agree that the games dingbat mentioned are violent and I would not personally let a child play them, you have NO right to tell him how to parent his own child. Unless he is abusing his kid in front of you, you should not tell him that he isn't a caring father. I played all kinds of violent games as a child. All I did was get scared. I didn't start shooting people or turning into a serial killer. Plus your statistic is made up and very much a stretch. You may have a good point, but you have to learn how to word things not to be insulting, especially when it comes to a parent taking care of their child.

Once upon a time art was thought to corrupt the young. Then books. Movies went through such a stage as wells. In the 50s comics were the great evil. In the 70s it was dungeons and dragons, in the 90s computer games. Aren't we over this already? How many kidsplayed mortal kombat?

I understand where you are coming from, because I grew up on all kinds of games. I just think your specific choices (fear and hitman) are kind of graphic. But like I stated above, it is your child and you know your son best. If you think he can handle it, then go for it! I have no kids and I can only go by my niece who I babysat for years. Some games gave her nightmares and others she was okay with lol.
I remember when I got Goldeneye on the N64 my parents though that was going to be too graphic for me (I was 5) but I loved it to death and never became a violent person from it lol. It's more about what will give him nightmares and not about what will make him violent.
I wish I could recommend some games but I mostly played console games as a child so I'm not sure what would be fun for a kid on PC. I don't think its on Steam, but I heard Splatoon is a kids dream when it comes to FPS so if hes got a Wii U (i think thats the system?) that is a good one.

I know they arent on your list, but have you considered any of the Fallout games? My mom plays about the same as your son (like taking her hand off the mouse to jump and moving with one finger), and shes been binge playing Fallout 3 on very easy mode. Not sure if youd consider the story too dark/scary for him though.

A good FPS for your kid would be any of the COD series. I played COD 4 when I was 6 and I played on veteran difficulty fine But if your kid is as "inexperienced" as you said you can just put it on easy and he should be able to play through that game at ease.

Let him try CoD and Medal of Honor series, they're fairly easy and I finished some of them by the time I was 8.

Also some recent FPS's I've finished you might want to check out ;

Alien Rage (kinda hard though, it's actually easy but millions of bugs make it hard)
Bedlam (incredibly well-done old-school)
Wrack
Binary Domain (TPS like Max Payne, might get complicated through the end but gameplay is amazing and simple)
Bulletstorm (BEST FPS I'VE EVER PLAYED)
Call of Juarez Series, Especially Gunslinger(gory though, and might be hard for him I'm not sure)
Crysis 1-2 is fairly easy
Homefront
Sniper Elite V2
Sniper Ghost Warrior 2
Spec Ops The Line

EDIT: Geez, some comments here ... Can you really be that ignorant ? Not all 7 year olds are retarded. And no, he won't turn into a sociopath for playing a gory game. I constantly played Doom, Call of Juarez and Wolfenstein at that age while watching Happy Tree Friends and I turned out fine. I think. I hope.

Maybe try something turn based (i.e. Legend of Grimrock) or some walking simulators to get (plenty of free ones) or combat-less first person games (Viscera Cleanup Detail) to help him get used to the controls. A controller may also be a good idea as even if he isn't familair with using one, two handed usage will possibly be more natural for him,

Not sure if there's anything similar thats more shooty shoots, I was just using that as an example of the game type. Maybe something like Space Hulk, but that's not first person. Or Valkyria Chronicles, which could still be too RPGcentric and maybe too tactical/ I've only played the first couple of missions so I'm not sure how difficult it gets

If you're going to get him started on FPS, start with a good one.
Then after he's died over and over, you can say "git gud, scrub." It'll build character.
