Which game should my 6 year old play?
Yeah. I remember how astonised I was. Katana, shurikens, akimbo uzis? That was unheard of :) I loved all the games of Build engine. Shadow Warrior, Duke Nukem 3D, Star Wars: Dark Forces, Outlaws, Redneck Rampage and of course Blood. Good times.
(edit: apparently Dark Forces and Outlaws was both developed on Jedi engine, which is very similar)

Maybe Lovely Planet ?
Although I'm not sure it's particularly easy

+1
No violence, no blood, a lot of content, affordable and easy to learn

Super 3-D Noah's Ark ?
it's low violence, you just launch food at animals to put them to sleep...

Hitman for a 7 year old kid? Are you kidding me? It's the best compared to the other choices, but I'm not sure if it's good for a 7 year old kid to play it. Still, it's not like I've ever been limited by my parents, so you can do the same for your son. ;P

well, I'd much rather that than F.E.A.R. or Dead Space. Content wise it's quite benign (except for the hallucinations), although there are some parts that are inappropriate - but he won't understand anyway.
I'm also more into education than avoidance. That being said, I really like the idea of Splatoon on the WiiU, and would love something like that.

True, I agree with that. It's better to educate your kid, rather than make him avoid everything. Still, I doubt these are educational games, but nevermind. XD Anyway, Hitman is awesome, so he should check it out.

well, I played Grand Theft Auto 3 when i was 12 and i regret that. I didn't understand a story, like most of young people, brutality attracted me. I have not finished it and now it will be hard to return.

Don't raise them with blood and violence please.

It uses the Wolf 3D engine. Keep in mind that the game was made by a company making Christian games. It's not something that gets rammed down your throat in this game though, there are just some bible questions. What did surprise me about it is just how hard that game is. DOOM on the second hardest difficulty was not a game I had any trouble with, but Super 3-D Noah's Ark is not a game I can get far in on what would be medium difficulty.
Actually, why not introduce your kid to the original Wolf 3D? There's nothing really shocking in the game, and you can teach him a bit about history while you're at it.

+1 with so many non violent FPS out there, there's no reason for him to be playing FEAR or Max Payne... in 4 or 5 years it'd be better to introduce him to

Hey! I started playing when I was 2!!! just silly things like Star Wars Droids and Rogue Squadron 3D, but anyway xD after that, well... A lot of games on PSX and PS2, but I think my first serious game was Diablo 2, 8 yo.

My brother and I learned on a reskin of the original 'Doom' called 'Chex Quest' (it was distributed with Chex cereal and was much more less frightening than 'Doom' proper). The older games were easier as there was no mouse input, no independent head movement or aiming was needed, so you could do what you describe your son doing without a problem. I wonder if something simple like that might be a good place to start. But I don't know what's available right now.

Yeah, us too. And for some reason save games didn't work for us, so we'd play the entire game at a sitting. (It was fortunate it only had five stages!)

LGR played that a few years ago! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSnci4tjNdQ

Give him Max Payne! PLEASE DO IT! I played it not when I was so young, I was maybe 12, but oh man the memories. I played the original Max Payne on my ps2 on rainy days. All that noir can't get out of your head! I also like the idea of giving kids older games so they don't get spoiled by the idea of "good graphics make a good game".
Edit: I also loved Resident Evil 4. So maybe he would like that too?

Oh that's true. But I don't know... when you're a kid you don't really understand the gravity of things. I'm sure he'll have forgotten all about that the moment he starts killing some bad guys in slow motion xD.

Maybe it's because I'm a guy, but... the first time I saw that I thought it was absolutely awesome! I should be 10 when I played Re4 for the first time.

Max Payne, F.E.A.R have content for 7 year old, yeah sure. The second one is hard even for me, and I have over 20 years of gaming experience ( also in FPS). Batman Arkham isn't a FPS. Maybe try Super Hot, it isn't violent and scary, but you should have some gaming expierence to appreciate special approach to FPS genre in this game.

It's not a fps but played like one for the most part. Plants vs zombie garden warfare. My kids love it and do fairly well in it due to its popularity among kids. Additionally it's not mature but rather more cartoon style. Not sure how pc is doing now the sequel is out but my kids still have no problems getting matches on the ps4. Or you can just go for the new sequel if it looks good to you.

Serious Sam 2 maybe. http://store.steampowered.com/app/204340/
No real blood/gore, comic style, doesn't take itself too seriously.

What about games that aren't FPS games exactly, but that have a similar input scheme? Minecraft comes to mind as a thing a lot of kids his age love, but which has both body movement and aim. Or perhaps Portal? That's what I've been using to try and teach my wife how to use an Xbox controller for 3D gaming. It's less stressful for her than a shooter would be because it isn't generally as time sensitive.
(Sorry for double posting. I kept pondering after my first post.)

If Portal's puzzles are too complex, try Polarity.

Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare is a great choice.

Orcs Must Die!
no blood no game
seriously though, i have seen kids at 7 years old playing GTA V and no one complaining about blood or violence, kids love that stuff exactly because they don't understand it

Edit: some good suggestions, and some good morality lessons so far. Keep it coming, folks
So, my son really enjoys watching me play FPS games, and wants to play himself.
He's played Team Fortress, CG:GO, F.E.A.R., Portal, Batman Arkham Asylum and possibly one or two others
But, (a) the games are a bit too mature for him, and (b) he's just not that good; he's still barely able to play with two hands. He only really uses one finger for moving. He takes his hand off the mouse to hit space so he can jump. etc. etc.
I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a game with a similar play style that is a lot easier (and hopefully not as scary / gory)
I was thinking of maybe starting him on something easier.
I have Hitman (2-5) Thief (1&2) and Max Payne (1&2) (apart from the acid scenes, which I'd do for him, the content is fine), which I think are good to start with. Or maybe Alice: The Madness Returns?
Or is there another FPS y'all would recommend?
I'm fairly liberal on content, and he won't notice the story whatsoever, though I would prefer it if it wasn't creepy or gory. But it's got to be extremely forgiving.
