DRM free versions & Steam Workshop questions

i just play hammerwatch from gog.com, ireally love drm free instead of drm versions but just saw that steam got a workshop and beta expansion?
what exactly is the workshop and do i have access to it when i have the drm free version?

i guess steam gives you more advantages for this game?

If you don't own the game on Steam, you don't have access to it's Workshop

Not better, but has more features :D

For me it's not a problem if a game is not a Steam version. I want the game, not the SWAG, because I have Steam version :D
Hammerwatch is 1$ on Humblebundle, so I think it's not a big price :)
