SUGGESTION: Notification Alerts for Forum / Thread Responses

I believe it would help both the SteamGifts community and the activity of the site by fostering more interactivity between users if there was a notification or alert system similar to that which one might find on a regular forum or discussion board. There would be settings to determine which events trigger a notification or alert, such as when:

  • someone responds to your thread or reply
  • someone responds to a specific comment chain you're following
  • someone responds to a thread you're watching

These feature could either be opt-in or opt-out, and users can select whether to automatically subscribe to alerts for a comment chain, thread, or your own post. Users could also toggle whether to continue monitoring that specific reply, comment chain, or thread at any time.

Would you want this feature to be implemented? Describe your thoughts, feelings, and opinions about this suggestion below.

EDIT: As Rinarin stated in the response, the majority of this suggestion is already coded (just not implemented at this time) or can't be coded given the current infrastructure, so it's pointless to continue this discussion. I've closed the thread, but I appreciate all the responses anyway!

Suggestion: search the forums before opening a thread. This feature exists (reply notifications) but is temporarily disabled due to high load it was causing.

I did search the forums and found no information on it. Can you point to where I can? Sorry if so.

Also, I was unaware of this. If this is true, I'll gladly close this thread.

No its not the same.
For example check the forums on oneplus.net
Alerts can also trigger for topics you are following and didnt post before.

There is a message feature in place for replies to your threads/comments/tickets/giveaways/trades but it has been disabled due to performance for a while. It will return soon.

Not available for watched threads though since we don't have that.

Up to you. We don't really have a way to subscribe to threads or comment chains and I am not sure that will be available any time soon so at least that part of your suggestion is not something implemented.

There are quite a few other threads for the replies in general though.

Eh, I might as well. Since the bulk of this suggestion is already a part of the site (just not implemented at this time), and the rest apparently isn't conducive with the current infrastructure of the code, it's rather pointless to continue discussing on it.

I appreciate your input, though.

Patience, the code for this exists. It's turned off at the moment to reduce server load. (At least I think that is why it is off)
