With DA:I coming up, I several times tried to play DA:O but I just couldn't, for some reason I just got bored from it. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Or I just haven't reached the point where it's starting to get interesting? I love RPGs, but I could never get into DA:O :/ Any tips?

Not your type of game probably. I had it on ps3 and got bored of it real quickly too.

The controller might be part of it, DA:O was vastly inferior on a console. DA2 on the other hand was preferred on a console... mostly.

I thought the only difference (yes, major, major difference) was the combat for DA:O.

  • Difficulty is lower (Normal on console is easy on PC, easy on console is a new "easy")

  • Controls are bad, lacks hotbar support for 10+ skills. I believe it only supports 4 active skills? Possibly 8. Been years since I've sampled the console version.

  • Tactics system doesn't got as deep, and lack of Advanced Tactics mod makes the tactics system much worse.

Of course those are combat based differences, but the game is about combat after all. Combat is at least 80% of my time spent in it (~115 hours) so sub-part combat would definitely ruin the game for me.

It might be because the combat is a bit slower paced than other games. There's a LOT of dialogue too, which isn't for everybody. Not sure what you're struggling with/what you like... so maybe try going through dialogue faster. Or maybe try a different class.

Yeah, I tried many classes. You got the slow pace and lots of dialogues right. I find the dialogues emotionless and boring :/ And the combat is pretty slow, I'm used to a more hack and slash.

Maybe reading into the lore would help out a bit. I haven't started playing DA yet but I think I would enjoy it.
I played Witcher 1-2 and you can understand certain parts clearly because they are explained in the e-book.(I think it comes with the GOG version)

Needless to say if you can't get into the lore, you should focus on the gameplay/questing.

You just never played the real RPGs, i think. Like NWN or Temple of the elemental evil. DA is more to those than to modern shit.

Thought this was a thread about DeviantArt's new interface :(.

Haven't played DA:O, but I've read it's a "love it or hate it" game, so there's nothing wrong in not being into it.

You either love it or you don't.
When I first played DAO on the 360 many years ago, for the first couple hours I found it pretty boring. But eventually I just grew to love the story, the characters and the lore. It's a pretty slow paced game and if you're not used to that, you're going to have a hard time.

I couldn't get into it partially because everytime one of my team goes down, they get weaker and easier to down again, and for some reason, I couldn't prevent them from going down over and over.

You could try getting some mods or raising the difficulty XD.

It's sad that you can't get into the game, but it's a personal choice.
Like me, I can't get into The Witcher and Risen. Those kinds of RPG are just not my stuff.

Idk, it must be that it is not your type of game. When i first played it, it got me from the first second, the whole concept, the visuals, the story seemed interesting for me from the first second. It is one of my favorite all time RPGs.

But i can understand what you're saying. I got the same with Mass Effect. I started again Mass Effect 1 (i started once, but never finished it, because it sucked), because of the big hype, and i cannot even imagine what people love about it: the story is boring, the combat is terrible. I want to finish the game, but it is really a suffering for me.

The beginning of a new series can always be a touch rough. You're starting from zero with all of the gibberish names (which are especially bad in fantasy stories), so it can take a bit to get your bearings. Its one of the reasons I've always had problems getting into Fantasy games. They always seem so cheesy and it can be hard to keep track of whether Arsemander is from Dragonsflorg or Hymendale.

If it's the slow pause and play tactical gameplay you dislike, try lowering the difficulty to easy, and you won't have to pause. It takes a bit for it to get interesting, I'd say a little while after Ostagar, once you hit Denerim. If you aren't past that, maybe try to play it past there, and see if you start to get into it.

I had the most fun playing a melee rogue. Mages become too powerful in no time.

Same is happening to me, I'm currently playing DAO and I really try to like this game but I just can't, mainly because of the combat. I know BioWare used this MMO combat style before and I liked it in Star Wars KOTOR but in DAO, it feels pretty broken and boring.

I think it's one of those that you love or you hate but there's no middle point
