Well said. But your un-subscription and blocking something as spam does not unlist you from their records. I have seen violations of this and I have received spam emails from websites I have never used. So, one can say for certain that a few companies do sell records of emails to other companies.
So, I can understand his concern. With online companies and governments tracking your each and every move on web (because they have nothing better to do), it is only reasonable that people are paranoid about their privacy. And yet, when you can be tracked by the browser cookies what difference does it make whether some unknown company have your email or not (as long as it isn't linked to a bank account).
Online privacy is a fool's dream. If one really wants privacy he should use a computer which he never connects to internet.
