original C&C turned freeware at one point so everyone should try this gem ^^

I used to play Chrono Trigger for every ending during the summer for about 4 years. I got it down to beating it in 3-7 days (using game genie to help fight against Lavos at the end of time), then stopped because of school :( . I still haven't beaten the re-release yet. In due time I will.

This. But after you complete your first New Game+ run it gets easy to defeat Lavos.

I was absolutely addicted to Guild Wars when it first came out. The only thing that was able to make me stop playing was when I couldn't afford to get the expansions and my character rapidly became obsolete. I'd still love to get the expansions now, but not really any point with GW2 coming out soon enough.

Well, it was nice for co-op, but made multiplayer so much harder. No matter how hard you tried, you were going to be a screen-looker at some point.

Crysis (1 and Warhead). No idea why I love to run around planting C4's on tanks and killing aliens.

I don't really have any 1 game that I keep going back to. I always keep going back to one game, getting distracted, then going to another game.
Based on time (and ignoring TF2 because it's the most played game on so many peoples' lists), my main one is Borderlands. I always spend an entire night playing it with some friends, and then we all basically forget about its existence for a couple of weeks to a month, and then we go back and spend an entire night on it again.
Based on games which I just randomly go back to, I'd have to say that my game is Ogre Battle 64. I've owned it since shortly after it came out and I still haven't beaten it. I always get about half-way through, and then a new game comes out and I lose focus on it. When I come back to play it again I just can't bring myself to continue with the current playthrough and feel the need to start over. This cycle has been repeating itself for the past ~11 years.
Based on games which I've beaten multiple times, I'd say that that goes to Fable 2. I've beaten it on 360 probably 5 or 6 times.
Edit: I thought of a late addition to my list: Just Cause 2. I don't keep going back to replay the game, or because I can't beat a specific mission. I go back because you can only spend so much time flying around a city looking for a single missing item before you need to either stop or risk going insane.

I never really understood how people play campaigns over and over; isn't the plot spoiled after the first run through?
But yeah, I keep going back to (read: can't get away from) L4D2. The multiplayer is unlike anything else. Every day's a new game pretty much ^_^. So fun eeeeeeeeeee I just recently broke 500 hours on that baby.

Haven't you ever watched a movie or read a book more than once?

I guess that makes sense. Maybe I need to give game campaigns more of a chance lol. But I think what I like most about games is the community you play with, not necessarily the game itself. I'd probably get bored playing alongside the computer :(.

I feel the same, what the point of playing a game again and again, i mean you can replay some game a year after or that, but not 27 times...
Yeah i see a movie, but is only 1 hour, a game is from 10 hours to 50... the same with a book, never read a book once finished.
With RPG like oblivion i undesrtand, every time you start a new game you have a lot of options to do and ways to play.
But example, ME? Y play the first one, and after some days unisntaled, just too slow and repetitive i dont see me doing it 27 times...

Then you clearly haven't been reading the right books. :P

Some games have the "mario appeal". Serious sam and monster hunter have no real story to speak of, but its the skill level (both insanely easy or hard) that keeps it fun. I guess it takes a good beating to keep you coming back. (or cruising through a map blasting everything in sight on easy with inf ammo :D)
monster hunter is the only game that could waste 50 minutes of my time trying to defeat two monsters and timing out, 5 times in a row. and still have me come back to it. Best feeling ever when you finally do beat them.

There's multiple reasons to keep going back.
1) You like the gameplay and there isn't multiplayer.
2) You really liked the story and want to go through it again.
2.5) You want to find any subtleties in the story you missed, or any hidden bits of foreshadowing you may not have noticed.
3) The game has multiple choices and you want to try them out.
4) You replay the game on a higher difficulty.

I'm also stuck on L4D2 ... I've had it since it was released and still play it. Sometimes every day and sometimes not for months, but I always come back. Almost 1k hrs invested into the game and I've loved every minute!

counter strike 1.6 , becoming great in that game has become a quest :d

I play Spelunky to procrastinate little bits of time so I've been playing it much more than I should.

Diablo 1 - The best hack 'n slash RPG, randomized selection of main and side quests, completely randomized dungeons, cool bosses, fun looting, nice inventory management, no grinding, no censoring, excellent atmosphere, amazing sound track, some good voice acting (the hero, at least), excellent graphics - even for today, those succubi are still looking pixeliciously smokin'.
ONI - The gameplay is just pure fun, unlike the level design & missions unfortunately.
STALKER:SOC - I feel at peace whenever I play that game, I just keep wandering around the zone, admiring the beautiful & deserted landscape, and if I do happen to stumble in a gunfight, that's a bonus.

You may want to try Torchlight if you haven't already. It's nearly identical to Diablo (toned down for more of a T rating feel). Admittedly, the game doesn't feel as expansive as Diablo, but it's still a great game if you like that particular style of gameplay.

Fallout 1 & 2 because both are most epic games for me - post nuclear "do what you want" & "save the world" games. Also Portal & Portal 2 for good puzzles (not to hard, not to easy) and much of humor. And for the same thing - Monkey Island 1, 2, 3 (excluding Monkey Island 4 - I just don't like way you control and see the world in Monkey Island 4 - never finished it btw because of that).

What game have you played the most and why?
For me, it's Mass Effect. I'm currently nearing the end of my thirty-fourth playthrough wih a thirty-fifth starting immediately afterwards (and a thirty-sixth and seventh planned for the future). I don't really know why I play it so much, but I can't get enough of it. I even love the Mako (thereby securing myself a place in hell, I know). At an average of 17 hours for a full playthrough, I've dedicated 578 hours (24 days) of my life to this game. BioWare, why are you sucking up my lifeforce?
