I'd guess that would depend on his sense of humour though as to if it was appropriate or not.

I'm not a particularly funny person, so the only thing I can't help in that regard.
But what I came up with is simply "for safe keeping".

As long as he keeps it safe the knife will keep him safe. And if kept well it will also be able to be passed on to keep those he loves safe.

You mentioned your father is one of the "don't like anything except documentaries, and non fiction." That gives me an idea - find a short quote from one of historical figures your father likes. Since you're giving him a multitool, maybe look for an engineer? :D
