Here's something else about captchas that I found very interesting: I noticed due to joining a lot of indiagalagiveaways point refill stuff: When you use the IE you often (like 90% of the time) get very easy all number combinations (there they want you to confirm house numbers the google car probably took photos of) and when you use Firefox, you absolutely never get these all number all clear captchas. Not once. I think they are well aware that IE uses tend to be... not qualified to unscribble hardy readable stuff.

not really news, by design recaptcha only ever checks half of the response. The other half is helping do OCR for archivists.

It doesn't work anyway that way any more... maybe some years ago. Now you have to type in both words correct.. well, sometimes you can't read it and they don't know either, so you can be off in some cases, but they are clever/good by now and won't accept random letters that aren't even close to what they themselves think it is.

4chan used to be overrun by spambots so the site admin implemented recaptcha to post. The users colluded to type in offensive words for the part of the captcha that needed to be encoded, but Google caught on and told the admin to stop the users from doing so or else he wouldn't be able to use recaptcha for the site.

What if it's some sort of exercise?
You have to watch a random sequence of words during 10 minutes and then write a thesis based on the possible political and/or socioeconomic meaning of these words?
It's revolutionary because, not only it checks if you're a bot, it also gathers info about your political views! :D
