Because you said you were not active for a long time: There's an automatic sync every 24h since October 2017 (changelog). This syncs games and groups. If sync fails for more than one week you can't enter a giveaway. IMHO this is already a good solution.

I am not here from a long time, but I think there is two point which could help group usage in steamgifts
First one is to allow steam group owner to sync their member list on steamgifts.
I don't know if it is easy (or not) to get the list of member of a group with the steam api, but if you can get it, it will be easy to update the link table (group-user) here on steamgifts.
Maybe it can be a button on the group page (only available for owner)
Second one is to allow user to create giveaways with a sync date constraint (maybe 24h) to allow entries only if the account have been synced recently.
It should be a check box on the create giveaway page (maybe checked by default) + add a validation on the giveaway page to prevent entry if your sync is too old (like the one which say you don't have enough point to enter the giveaway)
If the source code of steamgifts is available somewhere I could try to propose a pull request for this ;)
