Just being cautious after the whole Streets of Rage Remake thing - it also took years to reach its final iteration and soon after the rightholders came down on the devs. I know it can still be found with a bit of searching, but I don't really want to see history repeat itself :/
I didn't think the first Metroid was from 1986, I'd have said late 80s or early 90s. Wasn't there another Metroid game in the works? They might not make 2D Metroids anymore but Samus still seems to be a popular character (mostly thanks to Smash Bros).

With SoRR, they spoke with Sega of Japan, who was fine with it. Sega of America is the one that shut them down right after release. Easy to find though.
The original Metroid indeed released on the 6th of August 1986. And Nintendo are close to releasing that 3DS game that doesn't have Samus at all.

Nice. You have to wonder why Nintendo haven't remade it themselves.

I have to admit I never got particularly far as a kid, maybe 3 or 4 hours in. I remember I already had the first upgrades for Samus, those explosive charges and the sticky ball but with those huge levels a big part of the challenge was to find where to continue :D Maybe I'll finish it now.

I've never played any metroid game, but I'm downlading this just in case I ever want to give it a try and it's no longer available (nintendo can be unpredictable with what they decide to take down).
