"I’m building up quite the portfolio of affected gamers, who find after a forum violation they’re unable to access their Origin games. And within this is a more disturbing trend – those who are finding that their forum bans are, without explanation, becoming permanent bans. Permanent bans from accessing their Origin accounts, their Battlelog accounts, and therefore downloading purchased games, and playing online."

Glad I never bothered with it.

dude, back off, they have a bad ban system ok? its gonna be fixed, leave origin alone, -1 for ea tho because they rush people to make games, therefore games like crysis 2 and bf3 didnt take off like they should have.

Origin is the problem, it's EA's online distribution platform. What EA is doing with it is still a reason why it's not good, you can't use origin and not deal with EA they are intrinsically linked.

If you meant online digital distribution is not a problem, then I agree.

It should also be noted that Origin has a pretty tight EULA so, messing with EA isn't like messing with Steam. Trying workarounds and stuff like that EA doesn't put up with that shit. For Perma bans, it's mostly deserved. People are always trying to beat the 'system' but the most cases they are trying to cheat the OPs and finding that the Op's bark isn't louder then their bite.

So then you have no problem with EA's practice then? If I curse in a forum post then its perfectly fine for them to effective steal games I paid for? Even if I have spent 500 dollars or more? Banning from the forums is all well and fine, the problem everyone is commenting on is being banned from ALL games. It would be the same as having your entire steam catalog locked and all access to it blocked because you said a game on steam sucked or cursed or any other number of reasons in a forum post OR steam chat. Hardly fair even if it is in the Eula.

It's entirely dependant on what's in their EULA and TOS. If within those documents that you agree to it states "Hey asshole, if you fuck up on the forums then we're taking your games away. No ifs, no buts, you lose all your shit if you act like a dick or break our rules" then that's what you agree to when you make an account. If that's the case, there are now a number of people at EA confused and screaming "WHY WON'T IT READ?!". The problem is that, as far as I'm aware, there's no such thing being agreed to anywhere and EA have claimed that it's a technical problem that they'll fix 'soon' (which was said roughly a month ago) which is something to be annoyed about. It's worth noting, however, that if such a clause WAS in the EULA then I'd think it's a pretty interesting thing to stop people acting like jackasses on the forums and/or to other players/members of the community. If you want someone to pay attention, mess with their money.

The easiest solution to this would be to just not use the forums. Yes there is the "Just don't use Origin derpa derrrr" option but with the exception of a handful of horror stories, there's nothing intrinsically wrong with Origin. I've known people have worse experience with Steam who tried to go public about it and everyone said that that kind of stuff happens and it'll probably be fixed soon; the fact that people aren't doing it with Origin just because they want an excuse to hate EA just seems unfair.

bin's right you don't like it, the walk away. when you post you have to sign their Eula and TOS. Not to say EA isn't shady but if you find your games are gone b/c you didn't read the contract that you signed then your A) ignorant or B) stupid. One way or another no matter how you look at it it's EA has the rights to do what they need to conduct their business. I take it you didn't see that when you install origin it asks for the right to scan you computer so that EA can see if you have any pirated software. But most just click the box and then go ok. Why? b/c gamers are a bit lazy and impatient in their lawyers eyes.. Then again it also comes down to the fact that they are also not invading your privacy b/c you gave them permission.

Anyway I know why Ea would pull a person''s games and that has to do with fraud or hacking so just like people crying wolf about steam banning them from their accounts same thing goes. Ea needs gamers to give them money, banning people who give them money for what ever reason is retarded.

it's mostly people who are selling keys or admitting to piracy. People who don't read the EULA. Or people who think they can troll. EA's not really pulling a big one on it's customers rather people who are dumb.

trolling someone in an forum completely unrelated to any of your in game activity results in a complete ban from every EA game you buy, even the single player component... I agree that people are dumb... for dealing with EA at all, not for "earning" bans by violating a nazi EULA.

lol trolls get their game pulled serve's em right. I doubt it though. But hey it's about time people start being punished for bullying on the internet. In essence trolls are committing a crime you know. just b/c you can stay hidden behind a username doesn't give the right to spam hate - even if the hater finds it fun.

Edit: I said it before I'll say it again if someone had paid cash to Ea they aren't gonna ban that person without notice.

The customer is not always right, never has been, even though that was the saying.

Walk into any store, and make some outrageous demands, you'll see how right you are.

Just saw a story on Destructoid about this. Apparently a guy named Aaron was banned because someone else insulted him. Kind of a strange story, but there are quite a few reports on random, permanent bans. This Aaron dude says he can't even play Bad Company 2 online, even though he has it on Steam.

Edit: Ah, RockPaperShotgun mentions that, too. Well, it's ridiculous. Even if he deserved to be banned from the forum, there's no reason to block his access to his products. How EA thinks that's a good idea is beyond me.

I've read somewhere that some guy got banned for the same post twice. It was only a temporary ban both times though, but still it makes me completely avoid their forums.

Steam on the other hand just banned my Forum account once, without any effect to my steam account, so w/e :D

I so frigging hate EA for buying mah lovely BioWare. Right afer that DRAGON AGE 2 became a piece o' shit, with buncha DLC etcetera. I am so friggin' happy that they are but a merely publishers for SWTOR. (I completed first KOTOR 16 times, it's my favourite game.) And if SWTOR goes in wrong direction- i will be soooo frigging pissed off.

EA only wants people to pay for their games, not to play them. Seriously, EA has always been the evil of all publishers and Origin is one of the worst things that can happen to a gamer's computer. It's obvious, but clearly some people still need to learn that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There isn't much to discuss. We all knew that EA wasn't the best of publishers out there, and that Origin was a huge POS. If anything, this will tarnish their name even further, and I really hope that they will face some lawsuits for such injustices since there are still major sums of money at stake, which nobody wants to lose over such fascist reasons.

I keep reading stuff like this over the BF3 forums, and while some guys deserve a nice ban, i'm not sure they should ban them from the game and plattform; then again those complaining in a way should read the EULA and TOS, in game we're all free to talk shit, but in the forums its not like that, and they have the right to act against such things.

Either way, they should really take care of stuff like this with a bit more.....prudence, so far it seems like they're going for a world record in pissed off customers.

Permalink

Regardless of what the TOS/Eula says thats no reason to bar someone access to games they bought and paid for. Companies cry fowl and piss and moan all the time about piracy and how it affects their bottom lines and oh whoa are we even though they have made record profits but I digress. They piss and moan and yet keep pulling this shit which further drives consumers to pirate products. After all, whats the point of dealing with DRM and this kind of bullshit when you can just download a game and crack and enjoy it hassle free?
