I've been using avast! for a while now and while it's been working for me, I wonder if there is a better one out there.

Heh. It is a bit sad but funny how every single AV-related site trashes Lavasoft in every conceivable way.

I use AVG as well. If you are generally careful, even an average quality antivirus will be enough.

That poll literally lists every shitty commercial antivirus softwares in the existance.
Use your brain, if you're having trouble use Eset NOD32( I do use it since I have to use lots of USB's from different classmates¹). Avast is the second worst antivirus ever, first one was Panda (I don't know if it's still around).

¹most of them are technologically retarded.

Notes;

Avira has A LOT of performance impact.

Kaspersky is completely useless in malwares.

Norton just adds a yellow box near your computer clock and does nothing else.

McAfee ... seriously ... what the f**k is wrong with you ?

AVG was okay until W10, they have a bad support for it.

I mixed up BitDefender and Avira. Sorry about it, it's been a long time since I used them.

I'm using Avast! at the moment, with the occasional run of MBAM. I also use common sense and don't click and run random things from unknown sources.

I also use Sandboxie and/or VirtualBox when I want to run suspicious things that could potentially put me at risk.

Common sense, an excess of caution, and Mbam for when I inevitably screw up. I used to work in IT and I found, working on other peoples' computers, what some of the most common ways virus are transmitted porn and torrents, and especially porn torrents and so now I can avoid some of the risks that way. I used to run Avast, but it decided to flip out on me, so now I'm running rather unsafely.

I'm not a professional, a hacker, or whatever, but I'm aware of most of the common dangers you can find on the internet.
I used AVG and avast! (free versions) in the past, but then I realized they only ate resources and annoyed me with messages every moment. Then I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 7, which got embedded as Windows Defender in Windows 8 and 10. Never had a problem nor annoyance with it (but maybe it's because I know what to click in a web page), it's very quiet and light.
I run Malwarebytes every now and then, but usually it doesn't find anything.

Webroot which is honestly the best anti-virus program I've used. Before I had Kapersky which I did not like and Norton which was fine.
I also use Malwarebytes to scan my computer from time to time as well as CCleaner to clean up my files.

For security I use Microsoft Security Essentials. It is very light and absolutely enough if you don't visit shady parts of Internet
