As we all know, to register a new Steam Gifts account, a minimum value of $100 of unbundled, non-free games is needed.

We have this requirement in place to prevent users from registering multiple accounts.

But we can see that there're still a lot of them, so I made a comment on the forum about raising it a bit, and it sparkled quite some attention, so I thought about making a poll out of it.

What do Steam Gifters think? Should the limit be raised? And if so, by how much?

With amount of free gleamio giveaways, It's quite fast to farm accounts /w $100 value.

So unfortunately, yes.

They don't? That's good then, I guess. I was under assumption they did, just no giveaways.

Edit: Bundles games count 15% of value, like giveaways iirc.

Nope, all games on the bundle list are calculated as a big, fat zero when you register.

Nope, they're COMPLETELY excluded, only non-bundled games count.

Nah. There are tons of bundled games right now, so getting undundled games which will count towards these 100$ can be problematic.

Permalink

I had quite some trouble getting to the $100,- limit myself. Since many of the games I bought full price on steam were bundled before.
So raising it will be quit unfair imho.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree on that, I think that it would create an elitist system. Hence why I dubbed it a "needed evil".
And that's why I made the poll in the first place, to hear what the community think about it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Regarding this I reckon we can raise it but you need to submit a receipt that came from steam regarding when it was bought and when it was bundled... but this may be a problem cause making a log and all that would be a hassle, although I think their already basically doing it to the games that are already in the not included list.

Not gonna happen, for the same reasons you can't submit a ticket to prove you have a steam gift rather than a bundle key. Too much work.

It's an interesting question, and I wish I knew the answer, but, I don't think there is a right answer. Too low means too many leechers and alt accounts, too high, and it's unfair for people who don't have a lot of money. Theoretically, we could start experimenting with different levels, but, from a more practical perspective, it's probably best to leave as is

Better turn off registration during (free) weekends, or raise the amount during this time to a 'save' level.

Permalink

If they fall back under the 100, they get blocked from using it again, friend of mine did it during a free weekend without realizing then had to get their account up 6 more cents so they were back over 100 once it was done.

  1. Yes I agree that steamgifts should increase the minimum value from 100$ to 1000$
  2. Users who only win and never giveaway games should be suspended from participating in giveaways till they start giving away games.
  3. Users who havent been active for over a year should be removed.
  4. minimum steam level is +20

Very few people on Steam give a single shit about trading cards, and you cannot really get to level 9 or higher without them. Unless you buy games and have a library of 5000, which, again, not all users are mindless hoarders. Some have a small library they actually play (as alien this concept may sound around here.)

Level 5 might be a good starting point, as you can get there just by completing the community badge (and spending $5 to unrestrict the account).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Level 5, yes. Adding in the money requirement, you may even say level 6 or 7. That should require no game badge crafting, but doable with the community badge and the required number of games to get in here.

Definitely not on point 4!! Dude, check out my profiles. Registered on SG 4 months ago with a steamrep of 4 and I've always got 1 or 2 giveaways running.

I've had a steam account for several years and haven't reached $1,000 yet according to the calculator. I also don't care much about the steam level so it's still under 20. I have something like 300+ steam games, 300+ GoG games, and a bunch of consoles and games. I was looking for something to do with my duplicate bundle games and stumbled on this site.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

  1. Nope. $1000 is a lot in some countries. Hell it's a good amount where I live.
  2. Again, nope. You can level restrict your giveaways if that bothers you.
  3. And again, nope. I was inactive for a year. I came back and gave away over 1600 games.
  4. Also, nope. Not everyone wants to spend money on cards and levels. Maybe they could use that money for #2 instead. ;)

I don't fit your rule 1 and 4, so you think users like me should be excluded. I'm sorry but I don't think I'm a leecher. Don't you think you are excluding too much people ?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Literally half of Steam is excluded from the calculation, so it is relatively difficult to get in here; you can have 3000 games on your account and still return $0.00 when the site calculates their value. Which is just ridiculous. So it's fine or too high even.

You'd be surprised to know how much value the site calculated when I registered...
And I mostly get games from bundles...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I was surprised when I joined as well, but then i realised how many games I bought on sales when a) Steam had good sales (good, ancient times) and b) bundles were mostly limited to some obscure sites. But I have seen people complaining on my wall about not having enough value, and they had decent enough libraries, but to their bad luck, most of them were added to the bundle list eventually. And many of those are AAA games.

It should actually be lowered imo.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'd like to think that the current threshold is enough to prevent people abusing the system as the cost of getting a permanent suspension is pretty high. Low level accounts can't really farm giveaways abusively since the win rate is so low anyway, and if they don't activate them they will get detected and suspended through regular measures very quickly. To actively abuse the system you'd need an army of low level accounts entering and winning games of value to trade/resell - something that the $100 limit should efficiently prevent already, since whichever account abuses the system will get found and suspended on a regular basis. Most likely you'll be unable to profit because of this.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not really. The 100 dollars limit is enough. Some people manage to cheat their way through and register, probably by buying games and then asking for a refund. Still, the 100 dollars limit is already too much. Not everyone has plenty of money to afford buying games, so I'm totally against this suggestion. :/

i would raise it to have less people in giveaways and increase my chance of winning :3

anyway, i don't think increasing the account value goes well with what sg is supposed to be. the requirement is to prevent an easy way to register alt accounts, not to have only "rich" people here.

besides, which would be the new requirement, $150, $200, $1000?
set it too low and it will be the same, too high will prevent people without much money to spend on their account from registering here.

I'd increase it to $150, that'd be still low enough to not be an elitist system, but high enough to leave most alt accounts out.

Have more than one account it's actually easy and cheap.
I wouldn't be surprised if someone has 5 accounts and abuse the cv system with them.

Mmh, not sure about rising the $100 minimum, it may turn this site into an elitist community.
I would just aply the same rules that are in place for CV: unbundled = 100% of value, bundled = 15% of value and free = 0%.
Then you can increase the minumum without too much of an impact.

Well, back when I joined SG I had a pretty modest account mostly comprised of bundled games and somehow I made it through the registration.
Haven't really been up to how difficult or not joining became since then, so from my perspective everything has been the same always. I also noticed those suspiciously secondary account looking user, so I assumed the registration wasn't that hard of a hurdle to jump.

It was much easier to register a few years ago, when I first joined the site, as bundles were pretty rare, we didn't have RU+CIS bundling -75% discounted games, and so on.

Now with all of that crap I say that $100 is more than enough. It shouldn't really be changed.
