Hello there, im an A-Level ICT student and for my coursework i must produce a Database on Microsoft Access. So im making you a free database all you need to do is post here and ill pm you. The design and layout can be chosen by you, although you will need to provide some information on your organisation and some details e.g. names etc will be needed. I will also be able to change restriction levels for different staff if needed using passwords or other methods.

Why is Access the devil's database? I don't get it?
You guys here prefer Oracle or something?

LOL I thought it has something to do with Microsoft. :)) Yet I still have to figure it out why some people keep seeing MS as Umbrella Corp.

No, I usually use either MySQL or Microsoft SQL Server. Access is good for a very small personal single-user project but as soon as it grows in complexity it just plain sucks.

Agreed, but I would add that for a small business (<10) on a LAN, it can work just fine. It is relatively easy to use and set up, has good support, and with VB knowledge you can set up a front end so that your users have no idea they are even using Access. I think a lot of groaning you see is either from people who just dislike MS, or people like me who have seen Access used wholly inappropriately.

You're welcome to come up with Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, SQLite, Postgre or MongoDB (not SQL). But. not. Access.

No can do. The exam board strictly expresses the use of Microsoft Access.

I have zero interest in a database created with Access, but hey. Not like anyone here has a company/would think one up when you don't.

Your educational institution has curious and questionable ideas about how the real world works.

Access has its role as basically a toy database framework. It's just fine for a single-workstation use case environment. If you start to try and make Access be a real database, however, this happens.

Think of the difference between Notepad and, say, Microsoft Word. Notepad is a great tool for editing small amounts of text. But you wouldn't want to write a novel in Notepad. You wouldn't want to write 50-page reports in Notepad. And you wouldn't want to create your entire resume in Notepad. It's all about the right tool for the job, and Access is the right tool for only a few jobs, but people think it's a universal tool.

The UK government department responsible for deciding what software is used regularly states they intend to have a discussion about alternatives and open sourced software right around the time a new deal has to be negotiated. Microsoft basically gives the stuff away just to ensure people are used to using it, I guess it stops them fading into irrelevance as quickly.

Eeks, your saying that they can tell you the layout of the database? That database is going to have horribly normalized tables/data.

Well its going to be used for thier company and i really wouldnt mind letting them choose. Dont forget that every company has their own house style.

Only person who should design a database in a company, is a database admin. Although if its a small company, it wouldn't really matter.

I'm just surprised you would be given a passing grade if its a poorly designed database. If I did that in my courses, it would have been an instant fail.

We are marked on how we make the database, not so much on the style..

Okay. yea, it has to be Access because thats what my school has and will most probably only let me use. It's not mainly my schools fault, then Exam board also make these decisions.

I see.

Yeah, I don't think you'll get many people who want Access. As for me, I run a web server so I use SQL/Mongo.

Access is an acceptable database for offline applications. It works very well with Visual Studio .NET.

I can do some SQL. Much handier than Access, though it's not at a job level yet.

??? are you making one aswell?

1 decade ago

Comment has been collapsed.

Nope. I had to 5 years ago. Every project I had to make in college had to be for a real company. And since I couldn't find a real company to actually help me I made up one and I made all my projects for that "company".

Nioce.. What was it about? :P

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

:)) Initially it was a computer hardware & software releaser that was also selling OEM & custom made computers and it also had a repair center.
For my other projects I had to "expand" the company so it also start writing & selling business software like ERP/CRM and so on.

Where I live they can revoke your diploma if they found out about something like that (even years after you graduated).

Technically it's the same here. But there are exceptions. It's not that I actually pretended the company really exists. And probably they realize not everybody will find a company willing to accept them.

Tbh if someoen has a company he/she would be better of with designing the database structure on his/her own. Sucks for you, but that's how it should be.

Not exactly, i have had some people say their interested. And not everyone has the experience, and maybe someone might be kind enough to let me do it? :D

Yes. I totally agree with the fact that this project sucks! But if i can find someone i will be more than happy to make a database for them.

Ask a local charitable organization. I used to work in HIV/AIDS education, and we had students come in that had to do various tasks for school. They ended up being a huge help. It's great to get someone to come in and offer to do something that isn't just busy work.
