What games can I activate?

Any EA game that is on *Origin and that you have a key for, regardless of where and when you bought it.

Obviously if the game isn't on Origin you won't be able to redeem it on Origin . . . because it's not on Origin in the first place.

How do I get a key for the game?

Usually the keys for the game are in pretty obvious place. If you're on Steam and don't find it in the usual place you can try and look for it in the registry.

How Do I activate the game?

  • Code redemption in the Origin client or account setting in the site.
  • If redeeming the code on Orgin fails you can try it here.
  • If all fails you can go to support and ask them to activate the game for you.

Notes

  • Mirror's Edge from Steam doesn't have a key, but you can still talk with Origin support and ask them to activate the game on your account.
  • Games Like Shank and Secret World might be published by EA, but their Steam counterpart isn't published by EA, so it's technically isn't EA game so you won't be able to activate the steam ones.

P.S; I like Origin and their support, but it in no way means I like EA, EA deserves most of the hate they get.

no idea why so many people hate EA and origin so much. From what I know, some people just hate EA from what they have heard or read, however they don't actually use origin even once, they never contact EA support for inquiry or help once...This is crazy...

I'm still focused on how EA ripped their games off Steam a while back just for Origin. It's an annoyance to have 90% of your games on Steam, then use Origin whenever you want to play something else from there. Two clients. You have to have two clients open.

I can tell you why older gamers hate EA.

TLDR: Because EA bought a lot of companies that were making great games in the past and ruined/shut down all of them.

You know that guy making Star Citizen? Why do you think he was able to get 12mill from ppl and why ppl think SC will be good game? Cos ppl already saw him making great games in the past. He was making great games at games developing company called Origin Systems, yeah the same Origin.

If EA for example buy Steam, shut it down, and then transfer its games catalog at Origin you will stop wondering why ;)

Why do people hate EA? Hmm, let's see. They are making a new engine for the new FIFA game but only for the console versions, stating that the next generation consoles are more powerful than PCs. They said people can have a refund for SimCity but then refused to give refunds if asked. They have said that it's impossible to make SimCity work in offline mode, while pirates were reporting the cracked version works perfectly in offline mode. Lots of games that they release on PC don't get proper support. All of their DLC is overpriced. They have tried buying Valve for 1 billion dollars. Most of the sequels they release are dumbed-down versions of their prequels. They have destroyed multiple development studious. I personaly hate them because they haven't even bothered to remove the DRM they put on the disc version of games before putting them on Origin. They have sold real weapons made after the ones in the newer Medal of Honor games. They have illegally mailed out real brass knuckles to promote The Godfather II. They have held a contest to win prostitutes (basically). They have tried bribing reviewers by sending them a special edition of Dante's Inferno with a check for $200 inside. Before they edited it, the ToS for Origin said you agree for them to scan your PC and share your personel information to 3rd parties and use it for marketing. I'm pretty sure I can find even more screw ups of theirs on the internet.

TL;DR: Except for part of their support team and the Humble Origin Bundle, they are anti-consumer in every way.

How did you get the person from EA support to add Mirror's Edge to your Origin account. The answer I received was to ask Steam for the cd-key of my game which sounds Bogus.

Well after verification it is Bogus coz the Steam support page for Mirror's Edge says ..

"Note: Unlike most EA games that are sold on Steam, and EA/Origin key is not issued with a Steam purchase of Mirror's Edge. This game does not require a key when purchased through Steam, and there is no way to obtain one from a Steam purchase or through Steam Support."

The first time I contacted support it didn't work out, the second time I decided to be more persistent. Say that EA said that they'll to activate EA games bought from outside Origin and it wasn't said that Mirror's Edge was an exclusion, also it wasn't in the store page of the game that the CD-Key isn't provided, so you would obviously assume there is as all the other EA games on Steam. And you can tell them that they can't just blame Steam on it because it is EA's product and it's their responsibility to properly maintain the given information where they sell it. You can also say in a addition, that you bought the game in mind to get the DLC as well (which you can't get on Steam but only on Origin), so selling a product without warning that you can't get a certain part for it is a complete rip off.

Why people hate EA? :D
As stated above they buy, and wither studios, f.e. BioWare.
Mass Effect 2 was epic, and gamers thought that EA can see that too, so they will allow BW to make ME3 even better. Well.... let's say that didn't happened. If you have in depth knowledge of the ME trilogy u can clearly see, that EA just sucked out the money, and the game derailed, both single and multi player.
Origin: I can't describe that. My english does not have enough offensive words for that. They could have stayed with Steam, or just make an authenticating "software gate" for DRM, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, they don't give money to anyone, they game a whole new system, because they are EA. Results? Useless, unaccessable, and just dumb. It's like they found somewhere coders who never used internet, or any gaming community software before. Illogical, useless, and 0 wardware capacity behind. With every new game, or demo released the Origin dies for days. AND, if origin is down, you can't play. Yes, that's right, if you buy a game, but their systems are useless due 0$ budget you can't play.
AND for Mass Effect 3 most of the ppl still can't play with their friends, because after a year since the release of ME3 the origin is still unable to connect to it properly, resulting you can't just invite your firend from origin to play.

  • EA's genious idea with day1 DLCs, and all you can see that from glorious, fantastic franchises they just suck the money out, put the normal content into DLCs, and make everything DRM restiricted, even tho their systems clearly can't hold anything.

So yes, if you had a musthaveOrigin game since the start, you would know how it feels to be treated like a pile of ****, and how it feels to see a half decade old franchises die under EA's reich.

The Origin client isn't so bad. Their store could use more variety, and definitely more sales, but overall it's not half bad. Heck, they've even introduced some new features recently, --good ones--, that Steam has yet to catch-up on.

EA corporate has, of course, been both a nightmare and a bane on the gaming world for some years, but from all appearances the new head honcho is actually on "our side" and trying to turn things around. Fingers crossed.

EA support is another matter. First tier support (ie. online) is awful. Y'know, the guys that "help" you via chat. Avoid at all costs. Now, if you call one of the toll-free numbers, and get someone on voice, they're actually really nice and helpful.

im not sure what youre talking about wiht the 'avoid online chat'...

ive NEVER payed a dime for anything from Origin....early this morning, after reading this very thread i had decided to pull out some old boxed retail EA games i had put away and add them to an account...first, i did Mercenaries 2..that one loaded without me needing support, but then, The Godfather wouldnt...
so i hit the chat support up...

they answered in exactly 14 seconds...they aske dwhat i needed help with, i told thme i needed some serials to games i own retail copies of activated and added to my account...
this was medal of honor: airborne, and The Godfather....they said 'ok, would you mind waiting a couple of minutes while i look them up and add them to your account?"...i said, sure no problem...

2 or 3 minutes goes by and BLAM...the games are on my account along with mercenaries 2....so i proceed to tell them that that was the best customer service experience ive ever had whether online OR offline....an they thank me for that....they ask if i need anything else, i tell them no that was all....and they say goodbye, i say goodbye...
then they say 'look for a surprise'...
we disconnect...

i go and refresh my library, and theres is my 3 games...Mercenaries 2, MOH: Airborne, and The Godfather...
and then i see the surprise...they added Medal of Honor 2010 onto my account.....for no absolute reason at all...

and again, ive spent 0 dollars, or cents even on Origin, and JUST made my account this morning...

bad customer service??? shhhiiiittttt......

i wish Valve would learn a thing or two from them....

Steam is still my go-to digital service provider...but, if Origin upped its library to epic steam proportions, and did sales like Steam does...im pretty sure id be switching...

"im not sure what youre talking about wiht the 'avoid online chat'..."

Well, of course you're not. You just said your account was brand spanking new and you've contacted support once.

Ok, contacting support to get games activated is the number one thing they have to deal with on a daily basis, and even the janitor can probably handle it by now, so I'm not surprised your first outing was positive. However, wait 'til you've got an actual problem to solve. Then you'll most likely see what I'm talking about.

The guys who respond in the chat window, ie. they're typing at you, often don't seem to have a lot of knowledge or authority. I swear, once I had a special offer crash during the payment phase, leaving me unable to complete or re-try the order (since it was a use-once kind of deal), and after getting passed around a few times and "elevated" the final suggestion to complete the payment was, --I kid you not--, to uninstall & reinstall Origin. No, really. (Go looking for them and you'll find plenty of transcripts from others sharing their horror stories of Origin online support. And if things on this level are changing for the better, that's great, I'm all for it. I'm merely recounting how things have been.)

Anyway, that's when I got fed up and figured out how to actually phone the people who know what they're talking about and can get things done, and oh yeah, once I'd made that leap, everything was indeed roses. Very nice, very helpful.

Also "The Lord of the Rings - The Battle For Middle-Earth II" isn't on Origin in the first place, so you can't activate it for Origin, but there's the game + expansion pack which was on Origin, so you can try and convince them to activate the expansion for you.

Yup, obviously all those people who say that Steam's client is bad piece of software and say that Origin's client works much better are just trolls.

I kinda agree with you, steam eats up lots of resources.
But it is usefull, to connect with friends+you can reach community stuff instantly.
I only wish it wouldn't feel like a web wrap up.

I don't remember origin performance issues but it had freezes and some minor bugs.

Problem is that they could do what they do with more efficiency, Steam client just have so many freaking problems, like existing without saying anything, sometimes even while I'm playing games. Origin on the other hand is pretty flawless and fast. Of course at large I still prefer Steam due it's living community and great service. Steam and Origin are the perfect example of Yin and Yang.

I wonder why steam doesn't try to fix it's shit... Maybe it's impossible without removing features?
We average people can't know what's the problem, i wonder if Gaben still cares about steam or he's just preparing to die in a pile of money and in "half life 3 confirmed jokes"

If the software is so bad that they can't optimize it without removing big features then they really should consider to completely overhaul the client program. Also I think you misunderstand something, the service has alot of features, the client is actually pretty simple and doesn't have any big and special features, their client is technically just a browser.

I hate Origin because when I bought Spore and Galactic Advantures it wouldn't update them. I spoke with their support and it took them 3 weeks to add them to my origin account and I still had troubles, then they responded to me after SIX months. Yes, SIX MOnths, saying tha tthey are sorry and everything, gave me free Alice Madness return copy, and I still had troubles.

Yeah, that would make sense!

But hey, they are everywhere right? So also in Valve, right? Right?

I don't even know how to react to this properly.

Why would I want to add a game that I already have on Steam to Origin? I'm not sure what the point would be to adding them to Origin. Origin is a Battlefield launcher for me and nothing more.

For me it's EA game launcher, I don't want half of a franchise on one client and the other half on another. So I just use Origin for EA games, and supper and the client itself is better than Steam, so it's ok.

This shit is like arguing over Microsoft vs Sony, Consoles vs PC, Call of Duty vs Battlefield. It's pointless. If you don't like EA, then that's fine. Just boycott their products. They DON'T CAAAAAAAAAAARE. (Nor should they).

Origin is good now, but it was disgracefully inadequate (and still in beta) when BF3 and ME3 were released exclusively on it. To release such major titles on a client that regularly crashed, had poor download speeds, and regularly failed installs & updates was a really bad move and alienated a lot of consumers.
But yes, it works fine now.

I tried activating my copy of battlefield bad company 2 using my steam key on origin, it recognises the key but then goes on to say that the key has already been used.

There might be a temporary problem, but if it persists you can easily contact Origin support and ask help regarding this issue. And unless the key was actually used they should resolved the problem easily and quickly.

I bought the game from the steam store and have played it in the past on steam, when you load up the game it asks you to login to your ea account and activate your cd key within game. but apart from that I have never used the key. will that stop me?

Then it was obviously registered on the EA account you were using. Make sure to use that EA account as your Origin account. And if for some reason you can't, you should discuss the issue with Origin Support, but I doubt they could do much if you already used the key, but you can still try your luck with them.

It is activated to your EA account that you used in BFBC2. It's just hidden on Origin cause it's Steam copy, I know that cause I did contact support about it.

If it is so they should let you activate an origin copy as well.

Well, I guess you can contact them and tell them to add you additional BFBC2 (Origin version) cause you already have one hidden (steam version). My bet is that there are special keys that you get from steam when you purchase BFBC2 and they activate that hidden BFBC2 on account.

I hate EA and Origin for a number of reasons.

First, EA kind of kicked the modding community out of the Sims, sure they have the mods in their little store like thing, but last I saw, most of the mods were pretty much all reskins or premium.

Second, they forced Origin on people while it was still in Beta, and had tons of kinks to work out. You do not force people to use a front end that only kind of works. People would get banned on their forum account, and therefore not be able to play any of their games through Origin, because it would block their login. Also, there has been intrusive feature.

Third, I bought Darkspore through Steam, and for those who don't know, Darkspore has an error with the Steam version (which I wouldn't be suprised if it were intentional) and if you installed through Origin, you would be lucky to be able to play even single player because you would have to log in, and that would almost always fail. I contacted EA/Origin support, and to "fix" my log in issue (before I was ever able to log in at all) they were asking me loads of questions that would only give them complete access to my account, as if they were not actually a representative from EA/Origin. Being a veteran of the internet, I refused to give them this information because they would not give a clear answer to why they needed this information and I have always been told not to from every online community and game.

Fourth, they pull half baked moves like the DRM (or as EA put it, Multiplayer Compatibility) on Sim City 5, which caused loads of issues for their users, and claim that they would not be able to reverse it due to it being so ingrained in the code, and it would take too many resources to fix it, which I find hard to believe since one man managed to make a workaround with a number of issues, but if someone without the source code could pull that, why cannot the developers.

Fifth, I want Mass Effect 3 on Steam.

On that, watch to see if DA2 gets on Steam, most likely around the time DA3 is released, if it does, ME3 is likely to as well.

I only seen reasons to hate EA, not Origin. And about the support asking for information; they asked me for email, full name, secret answer countless time, and I did give them. It isn't a problem.

Not a problem other than the fact that they shouldn't need it. Every online community, they always say "admins and moderators never ask for your password" The secret answer is an equivalent to my password. That with them being unwilling to tell me why they needed it means they do not get it. If they would outright give me a good reason for me to give it to them without being dodgy, maybe I would give it to them, but "to make the game work" and "to apply some permissions" with no further explanation does not work for me.

It might be just some stupid policy to make sure you're the owner of the account or something, because they have access to your information and even your secret question, so if they wanted to do anything shady with it they wouldn't even ask.

Well, they didn't even say that, they said things similar to what I said, but would never elaborate. I have had customer service from other companies ask questions to confirm my identity, but would tell me why, not dodge my questions.

I understand your complaints, I myself agree with them. And EA has done some very shady things to its customers, but the origin client itself has gotten much better than it used to be (for me it is actually faster than Steam is), to the point where I actually don't mind having Mass Effect 3 on it. Plus their support is far superior to Valve's. I still use Steam for almost everything, but now I don't mind having Origin as well (whereas I used to absolutely loathe it).
