I don't think you actually get to build anything in it. Well, I haven't built anything in the campaign, just controlling a few units. Imo this isn't a great RTS and I would see what other people recommend to you.
Edit to your edit: Age of empires is a great series

I played a little myself, didn't really like it.
If you don't mind GOG titles, check out Dark Reign and Total Annihilation.

Company of heroes series and Age of Empires is my favorites of all time.

I do like the original Age of Empires, but installing it on recently computers, well that wasn't fun when it broke the default fonts in a number of software, including Steam.

I don't own that one, and my funds were decimated by the time it was a decent price in this sale. I do own the original though, three discs (two original and one Gold), and it seems content to break fonts when I want to play it.

I've played different titles. I'd name them, but 20 year old console exclusive RTS games won't appeal to most of this site. :P

Dawn of War and Dawn of War II have two different sides of RTS.
1) Dawn of War (Expansions Winter Assault, Dark Crusade ,and Soul Storm)
Game sets focus to build up base with different types of barracks to train and construct troops. Also game uses power and requisition as resources to build troops and buildings. These are collected by building power generators and capturing requisition points on the map. Some more powerful units require a special shrine-point to be captured, so you can train them up for limited amount.
2) Dawn of War II (Expansions Chaos rising and Retribution)
This game sets focus to squad control, collecting gear and distributing stat points in four different stat types to go with your play style. You can control up to four squads at a mission and squad types can be altered as you wish from melee, ranged ,and commander type. Vanilla Dawn of War and first expansion Chaos rising are sort of bound together at campaing, and Chaos rising requires vanilla version of the game to work at all. Retribution expansion works as standalone and storyline happens after vanilla and Chaos Rising, and completes the story that was started earlier. Retribution is also different from the other two, as you can play campaing with more than just Space Marines as playable race. Other than SM are Chaos, Eldar, Orks, Imperial Guard, and Tyranids.
Personally I enjoyed all of them. I hope this small summary helps you to make your choise.
Other RTS to try I would recommend on Warcraft and Starcraft series, Total Annihilation and TA:Kingdoms, and Supreme Commander to name a few.

Speaking of, where have all the DoW giveaways been coming from? Surely the ones from the Humble Bundle would have dried up by now, but there's been a steady flow of them for months.
