Not sure if this should be in off topic or deals but here goes.

So I just read that the devs of the Bards Tale IV have released an interesting promotion. They have a set of tiers that say the more people wishlisting the game, the lower the price will go for release.

Sounds like an interesting promotion. What do you guys think?

They really racked up the price compared to the kickstarter, huh? Even at 500k wishlists, it would still be more expensive than the initial kickstarter cost.

In fact, you can still preorder it for 28$ which makes this kinda.. questionable.

Isn't the whole point to offer it cheaper to the people who support development before it's out for release, so everything is as it should.

Well yes, but it's kinda odd to make a whole promotion based around the game being cheaper when you can literally buy it from their own website for less than the marketed "goal".

The retail price after it gets released is still different thing than pre-order discount price. It will continue to have that price long after there are no pre-orders available anywhere.

The retail price is multiplied against discounts (and discount % amount tends to be a key basis for sales these days), meaning it has a potential effect on future sales of the game as well, which preorder pricing does not. So anyone interested in getting the game later on may consider wishlisting, on the hopes that it affects future pricing.

As an example of that, the lowest a game usually discounts on Steam is 75 or 80% off, regardless of the game's base cost. 90% is, I believe, the definitive bottom. While the developer may instead end up leaning toward odd discounts (ie, -64% off), there's enough of an expectation related to discount percents that it's a reasonable gamble that a lower retail price will be more favorable to us.

In any case, it's a non-investment promotion, it's not like it's meant to compete with an investment promotion. In other words, obviously someone paying them right now is something they're going to give a better deal on. :P

Maybe. That dlc doesn't seem to be included in any preorder tiers, so no idea about the value. Can't be too big of a dlc though, as I imagine they'll release it even without reaching the goal later on. (Or maybe it's the extra 5$ value based on the kickstarter estimates)

I get the impression from the phrasing on the promotion, that it's actually a promise to add a mini-DLC for free (that wouldn't get added to the game otherwise) for all owners of the game. ie, "If you all reach this benchmark, we'll take time outside of our planned DLCs to whip up a little bonus adventure for the base game."

The same shtick a little hack & slash detective adventure called Omensight did a few months ago, only they just offered free DLC keys instead of a price drop. Although 100,000 was their ultimate goal, not the initial tier.

By the way, I love how the price drops 2×5 USD but only 5 GBP in total, when 1 GBP = 1.25 USD. Rather peculiar math right there. :D
Still, inXile is at least a trustworthy indie developer/publisher, so hopefully they are not thinking of some shenanigans to tarnish their name.
