I'm slightly confused why they said they were gifts... I mean, you wouldn't really be able to scam someone that easily through gifts as opposed to (CD) keys...
I don't really know anything about scammers.
Anyway, I'm not entering but thanks anyway for the giveaway!

You can, but it's painfully obvious. They usually ask you to go first or add their friend because they can't trade for some reason. This guy was just throwing off bad vibes and he hid his inventory half way through the conversation. If someone's being shady like that they are usually up to no good.
EDIT: Also they can use credit card fraud IIRC, so they will have the gift in their inventory and a few days after the trade Steam will take it back.

Forgive my lack of knowledge here, but are we talking game codes rather than Steam giftings? I would hate to think that Valve would permit someone to keep their game if they have been guilty of fraud. For that matter, why has not this fellow's account been suspended by Valve? Has this not been reported?

Honestly, I don't have a budget (don't have a job ATM) and I am still able to trade. I spent about $7 to buy the intersteller bundle and now I have quite an assortment of games. I actually have more games then when i started and have made a lot in profit with that tiny investment. Not saying you should put your college education at risk, as school is very important, but if you had spare cash and wanted to try trading you could. You just gotta now what you're doing :)

You can set your gift inventory to private, so that could be why you couldn't see them. Either way, he was an idiot. If you want to trade for something, just simply tell that "I want to trade my this for your that", instead of beating around the bush.

It's painfully obvious that English isn't their first language. I don't hold it against people as the internet is accessible to almost everyone nowadays, so it's not uncommon to find people from all over the world. What I don't understand is why scammers always end up being people from all over the world.

Wow, calling me jackass. I bet you only say that over internet cause IRL after you'd get hit in the head for saying jackass to someone unprovoked and probably start crying after that sad no lifer nerd.

Even if his profile is private, you can ask him to show an item from his inventory. On the chat he can press that down arrow, and select the last option: Display an item from your inventory. If he has the game, he can display it, so you will know that at least he have it. Be safe and cautius with traders, who speak in words instead of full sentences :D

I'm trying to be cautious :P the weird part is he came to me trying to trade and then made his inventory to private.

I know it's not :P I was just excited because it was my first one and I caught him, and the conversation was hilarious IMO.

I was minding my own business when suddenly a wild friend request pops up. I immediately looked through all my pending trade offers on SteamTrades to see if it was one of the people I sent an offer to. Turns out it wasn't and it was just a random person adding me to request a trade.
This is the conversation that followed.
This was his inventory before he set it to private.
I caught my first scammer thanks to all the help and advice I got from you guys, so I have to say.
Thank you SteamGifts!
