Does it allow you to skip months? Because if you cant for the duration of the year then is not worth it, if you can, then go for it, but be ready for that year to last you far longer.

Yes, I've skipped the last three months, I think. But I can imagine they'll rescind this flexibility at some point.

You can pause months, but when you resume it costs it's "normal" monthly price for the rest of the year.
They got me this way a couple of months ago. I'd say if I knew it'd be this way I'd never subscribe for a year.

Yeah I already did buy it and gift it to myself and it extended classic plan.

It was strange that support tells some people that it will not extend classic plan and give them premium while also telling others it will extend classic plan. There was a huge discussion on reddit about it.

Considering how HB choices 2020 were pretty meh, I'm not hoping too much for 2021. $99 would mean we should need around 9 months out of 12 to be "good" (meaning covering the price of a "month by month" buy for basic plan) and 8.5 months out of 12 (for premium plan).

In clear, the price is too high to bet on so many months to be good (again if we consider the history of 2020 choices). It would be a good deal to consider month by month buy instead so you keep the choice of your games and/or charity.

Hi, could you please add this in the OP and maybe highlight it in some way:

Must be redeemed on a new or compatible subscription plan.

A lot of Classic subscribers will be tempted to extend their subscription by gifting it to themselves, but it will not apply to an ongoing Classic plan since the sub activates Premium.

Classic subscribers will not be able to extend their subscription by gifting it to themselves.
Only new accounts or accounts that currently have a Premium subscription can benefit from this offer (maybe also Lite and Basic, but certainly not Classic) .

Edit: I just tried to gift a subscription to an account that already has an ongoing Classic subscription and it seems that it extended it by 12 months.
Hopefully it will keep the Classic subscription and not replace it with Premium when the current one ends.
Activating it looks like this.

My active plan is premium - month to month (Active perk: $9 each month for a year), so, does it still give me the one month free if I gift it to someone else?

Yes. The bonus free month is applied to any kind of subscription that the gifter has, but the Annual plan that you buy is restricted.

The classic plan is usually the only plan that's $12 a month but can't be picked anymore so if anyone wanted to join and get the most out of it they'd have to sign up for premium which, of course, is more expensive unless they have an active deal. As for classic, it usually doesn't give all games either, it gives you 10 picks. Of course, if there are exactly 10 games, then you'll get all of them but if there are more, you're limited to those 10 picks. So, if they decide to stop giving all games to classic and premium subs no matter the number of games in the bundle, you'd end up with 9 games for $18 instead of 10 games for $12 which, in my opinion, isn't really a good deal. Of course, everyone can do as they please but personally, I wouldn't suggest switching if you're on the classic sub.

I received an email offer for my own account:

Pick up a year of Choice Premium for just $99

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm wondering if I should just cancel my classic plan and gift myself premium for $99. I'm currently on the classic annual plan for $132 but I don't get renewed until February. Or I could switch to a month to month classic plan and hope that I get coupons for acting like I'm gonna pause every month but I'm not sure how frequent they would give me a coupon

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

fwiw, it'd probably be best to pause your classic account indefinitely, so you can at least go back to the cheaper price sometime down the road. i was thinking.. open a second account and gift that account a year from your classic account, get a free month on your classic. keep one account paused at all times (or double up on the games, i'm not your dad). you'll effectively be getting 13 months for $99. and since they've been giving all games away lately anyways, there's no difference between classic and premium, sans price.
as far as the coupon thing.. i'm a monthly subber and they gave me a please-don't-cancel coupon for october, but it didn't work for november. that's just me though, i've heard otherwise.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah I was thinking of doing that but I don't think it'd give me a free month. I think the free month only applies to subs that aren't classic. Still, I think it's a good idea. Only problem is remembering to pause every month

Ok, how am I wrong? It states on the promo ad that you get one month of PREMIUM choice for free. How are you going to get premium choice if you're subbed to classic? The subscription plans won't mix. It specifically states that it's a coupon, and that the free month is for a premium plan. I mean I'd like to be wrong but they don't let you mix subscription plans, it wouldn't make any sense.

If you don't believe me, check the promo banner at the top of the site yourself when you click on the link for the promo

EDIT: Now I see people claiming that they've extended their classic sub with a premium sub gift so I don't know what to believe. Maybe it works, I have no idea

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't know why, but I feel like they're just trying to get people to cancel their classic plan and switch to premium with this which will eventually cost them more for less if Humble decides to switch back from giving all games to the regular 9 picks for premium subscribers.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I was thinking this too, but I don't see humble switching back to the 9 pick model unless there was a solid AAA title in the mix, me and probably a lot of others would just pause that month

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I mean, it still says pick 9 games when looking at the premium conditions so there's always a chance that they'll switch back to it as it was their original plan setup. I wouldn't be surprised if they've done the giving all games just to bait people, making them believe that they'll continue doing it that way just to disappoint them later by switching it to what their actual subscription plan is. The offer does end on November 30th, so it's before the new choice bundle drops and I'm not sure but I don't think there's any information whether or not they'll be giving away all games again, is there? Of course, everyone can do as they please but to me, it just feels like a marketing stunt to get people to either subscribe or switch.

Curious. I received a similar coupon but for the mention of a free month when gifted.
Indeed when following the link it appears to have a gift toggle

https://www.humblebundle.com/subscription/checkout?duration=annual&tier=premium&gift=disabled
Once toggled (=enabled) the gift option is... enabled. Does that signify a free month? I don't know.

My email only said it could be gifted at that price, no mention of being able to buy it for myself. When I clicked your link above I got an error message saying I was an existing subscriber but I was on a month-to-month plan and had to choose to pay each month. I cancelled that, clicked your link again and was able to purchase it for myself. No mention of a free month but for me, that's great value for a whole year.

I have the same thing happen (infinite spinner) if I use the link in the promo email from Humble. It seems to be a bug with the way their site handles (or doesn't) accounts which aren't in USD. (There's an error in the browser console on that page for me: Uncaught Error: If subtracting two Money objects, they must be of the same currency.)

However, if I use this link (which I found here) the page loads correctly.

If we're currently a past but not current subscriber and want to get on this deal, (creating an alt for your brother / sister / mom / dad / w.e.)
is it possible to avoid getting two copies of the November bundle? I'm guessing the December 5th deadline is intended to prevent this,

It's tempting because my 12-Month Classic Plan will automatically renew on Friday, December 25, 2020 for $132. However it's so complicated and obscure that I'm not sure I want to risk it. I would need to gift it myself from a secondary account which could lead to a ban (maybe they're turning a blind eye but as adam1224 commented that would make them a bunch of hypocrites, I don't blame them for wanting our wallets, though) and I don't like how they're not clear about the premium/classic extension and I'd rather stay on my classic subscription.

Oh, it would be so easy to say "Hey, it's Black Friday everybody, pay $99 and get a full year extension on your Choice subscription" but nah, Humble likes to complicate things.

Who said anyone said you were pressed for cash? It's just the only reason I could think of that one would want to switch.

I'm not sure about anything regarding Humble Bundle and their terms. It's been an abundance of mixed messaging for a long time now and the terms and support responses for this deal takes the cake. Regarding pausing there is no information contradicting the general information about pausing though.

When you extend your classic sub with a premium gift it actually tells you that you'll be getting 10 games per month on the redeem page. I guess they could always change it if they want to but thats proof enough for me, plus madjoki has experience with it himself. I decided that setting a sub up on a new account and pausing classic on my main account is too much effort because I might screw up and forget to pause for a month. Better to just gift it to your main account so that you don't have to deal with 2 accounts

Permalink

That's one good idea, gift it to "someone else" (wink, wink) and pause my Classic Choice subscription while I get the monthly games from that "someone else" (wink, wink) hoping they will continue to offer all 12 games to premium and classic subscribers. I'll think about this or switching to a month-to-month subscription to be on the safe side.
