You are asking not very smart question ;) To obtain best hats and be a best player is the aim of tf2, so hats are meant to be traded, and people choose what to trade for them, because i saw that not only hats are traded to games, but also to other games items.

I heard those earbuds are worth something. I got them way back when I got my macbook.

Games = $$$$, TF2 hats = $$$
For example, 1 Craftable hat standard cheap = 0.50-0.70 $ +/-
1 TF2 Bill (exclusive L4d2 hat) = 8-10 $ +/-
Milion of hats, genuines, exclusives, unusuals... with million of different prices. There are unusual hats that cost more than 300 $

I dont know, why people selling hats for games. Hats is better.
