If you wanted to be really obscure you could have used the Korean bootleg version for Sega Master System, which was a lazy port of the MSX original and which for some reason had red snow :P

Oh, yeah, you are right. And actually looking at the video of the original MSX version it looked red on there as well. The fish confused me, why are there fish in a forest? But I guess they are jumping out of the holes in the ground. :P

This one wasn't released on the NES, only on MSX home computers :)
And yes, this is the first game Kojima did (as assistant director), before starting on the first Metal Gear.
The trolling is about getting the good ending (saving the pengiun princess). Cause according to the plot, you have to find a cure for a deathly sick Pengiun Princess, so you go racing around the world for it.
And the game has plenty of hidden shortcuts and such to get through it quicker. But taking the shortcuts will make sure you miss the ingredients for the cure, so the princess ends up dead anyway. Yay!

I had psx version. If I recall correctly, originally one of the potential "girlfriends" you could get was the male rival, but that story was cut out of the US release.

ive got the ps1 ver, played and replayed it a bit.
though if i recall gbc and ps1 vers where kinda different a bit.

not sure if it was more scary, or more disturbing lol.
though it was highly graphic, and being mostly a run away theme.
still was pretty good, though being able to fight back adds some fun to games.
it can also make them less scary, so this types pretty good.

I'm thinking of this thread more as a marathon rather than a sprint, and expect there to be periods of high and low activity with different participants joining in or taking breaks over time.
