A relative of mine is a grown up man who doesn`t know or understand anything about games or pc decided to buy pc and a gaming pad for his 10 years old boy. I persuaded him to that now i cannot be sure about the games i can recommend.

Any suggestions?

Stardew Valley.

Its a calming farming game. Multiplayer came out two months ago, and the game is good for everyone from casual to "expert" gamers.
It's also great for bonding.

As far as I know it doesn't support local coop :\ Though it's really fun in single player, that way it's really, really good

Ah fair point, though hopefully they'd be able to play together if the dad has a pc of their own...?

Maybe. When I wrote the first part (and edited to the second to it) I thought they want to play together, but then I realized that the goal is to make them like games, and for that it's one of the best games ^^

Buy him classics of every general genre: shooter, horror, puzzle , driving... Then he will know what types of games he likes, for example my father love driving games like formula one ones(lol) and I love fps.

Any way, I think its too soon for gaming, what a pity.

horror for 10yo? really?

Comment has been collapsed.

Well,

With horror I was meaning all kind of games that can make you jump off the chair, from f.e.a.r and its random jumpscare to alien isolation and that kinda games, a lot of friends and I used to play those games at that ages just because " it was fun and we laughted"

It¡s too soon for gaming because imo because having 10 years you still have lot of school to do and games lower that marks you will get at school ( 100% guaranted), for me, there is nothing more important that early marks that later will decide which future you will have.
Ofc he is free to play anything he wants at the age he wants, sad for me anyway.

Isn't it hard for 2 players?

I played with my wife, who isn't a gamer, and because of my experience we were able to get pretty far - but with 2 weak players I think it'd be too much of a challenge.

+10 to this. i know they all play about the same. But for someone who hasn't played games before and wants to play together with a 10 year old boy, they are perfect. There's light puzzling, easy combat, humour and even some extended challenges if you want to really get into it.

Not on Steam, but Zoo Tycoon is a nice game for me back then. Perhaps you might want Zoo Tycoon 2 instead for the better graphic.

Oh you can't understand what happened to me when I read this!! TEN THOUSAND TIMES +1!!!
Zoo Tycoon was one of my favourite games, it came out in many languages and it had also expansion packs, I would DEFINITELY recommend it and thanks a lot to you for having reminded me such an awesome game, I had lots of fun back in 2001/2002 playing it on my PC!!
It's been years that I didn't hear anyone talk about Zoo Tycoon.. such an awesome game! I don't know the second instalment, but the first one was really extremely awesome and suited for all ages, perfect for a kid and a teenager!! Plus the sea/acquatic animals expansion was awesome too!

For non-gamers they usually get frustrated by losing, especially any games that require quick reactions, they get confused because they are not used to the controls or using mouse/keyboard or whatever.

So I'd suggest casual games, or also any game with open world that lets you just roam freely and mess around without being limited strictly to the story/missions.

I'm a father myself, son is 9 years old - and he loves LEGO. With those you cannot miss - every movie etc has a proper game. Also some racing and shooting (Sonic and All-stars Racing Transformed and Toybox Turbos), creative like Minecraft, platformers like Rayman Origins, Castle of Illusions, Jumpjet Rex, a little bit of strategy in HoMM V and VI (he didn't liked the graphics of III).
I've started with Quake II, Carmageddon, Fallout and Earth Siege II - but those were times, when the graphics were just suggestive, not showing everything :P

Minecraft, Roblox, and Fortnite are very popular among kids. I would not recommend Roblox, but the other two are pretty good.

Terraria, all the LEGO games, Sea of Thieves etc.

Are you looking for games they can play together on the same PC or just games for them to play in general?

These are some good local coop games I've enjoyed with my niece:
Adventures of Shuggy
Broforce
Duck Game
Gang Beasts
ibb & obb
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime
Monaco
Move or Die
Nidhogg
Overcooked
Rocket League
ROCKETSROCKETSROCKETS
Skullgirls
Trine
Trine 2
Trine 3
Worms (all of them)

To suggest games in general, it depends on what they're interested in.

Broforce might be a little violent for kids? (I know some 10 year-olds don't care, but the dad might.)

As mentioned already, the Lego-Games are great! There are so many, so I'm sure whatever his son likes best (Pirates, Dinosaurs, Ninjas, Magic, Star Wars, Batman), you'll find something for him. There is so much to discover and they are child-friendly.
Yooka-Laylee is also a great game and shouldn't be too hard.
Oh, and Louie Cooks is a game a 10 year old child might love ^^

This. You're worried about the wrong thing. Games they should be able to pick whatever fits their own taste themselves. Not fucking up their system, that might be harder to achieve ^^

The 10 year old is going to have no problems figuring out what he wants to play. Let him choose. And once in a while maybe surprise him with something you think is cool.

The dad who has never gamed... don't worry about it. He doesn't need to be convinced.

These are the games my 8yo and I have enjoyed together in co-op:
ibb & obb
Lovers in a dangerous space time
Never Alone
Lego Games (We've played Batman and the Star Wars Complete)
Super Blood Hockey

and the games we've played together:
Midtown Madnes 2
Escape Goat 1 & 2
MX vs. ATV Reflex
Burnout Paradise
Adventures of Shuggy
Crash Drive 2
Goat Simulator

and we've dabbled a bit with Baldur's Gate. My kid really wants to like it, but there's just a bit too much reading for him.

I understand that the hardware question is already settled, but there certainly isn't any better choice than Nintendo to get people into gaming. Be it young or old.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

+10 to this as well. "Hardcore" gamers like to make fun of nintendo, but the fact is they have really perfected making games that are fun and accessible, but still with enough challenge on top of that for those who might be looking for it. Why people with younger children buy them anything other than Nintendo is beyond me. I got my nephew a cheap wii a few years ago when his friends all had xbox 360s, and they thought it was lame, but whenever they are visiting all they do is sit around and play the damn thing.

Nintendo made up a good portion of my childhood gaming. Especially Zelda: A Link to the Past and Wind Waker, which I sunk a ridiculous number of hours into. I don't think most of their games are available on PC or tablet, though?

Definitely Lego games as many have mentioned. Marvel, Star Wars, DC etc. etc. Lego Worlds is actually pretty awesome as well.

Pinball FX3 (the Sorceror's Lair table is free and you can buy DLC table packs)
The Disney Infinity Gold collection
Castle Crashers
Sonic Mania
Portal Knights

Oh if they like baseball I hear that Super Mega Baseball: Extra Innings is pretty fun.
