Hello, Steamgifts community!

First things first, GIVEAWAYS!

I’m here to announce that Hardest Harvest, the game my brother and I have been secretly developing for the past 9 months, has a playable demo which has been featured in the Steam Game Festival: Autumn Edition.

Hardest Harvest is a fast-paced FPS about a farmer striving to survive a horde of corrupted plants and save cute crops along the way, all set in an everfalling arena leaving the player no option but to dodge incoming enemies and fight the swarm.

Some notes about the demo:
It doesn’t really feature a score system because it’s supposed to end at roughly 7 minutes with a cutscene, which apparently almost no one reached. It’s been made like this just to receive feedback on the game difficulty.
We are not really fond of hand holding the players, so the game explanation is limited to a single scroll showing up before the fun starts. It will be up to you to discover how to grab power-ups, take full advantage of the movement system, or simply destroy spawners.

Said so, I hope you will enjoy the demo! It is our very first public game and its development has been a rollercoaster of emotions. Huge satisfaction when something was working properly as well as incredible frustration when Unity went nuts. Overall, a beautiful learning experience.
Oh, there’s a survey button showing up while quitting the game. Feedback is super appreciated!
If you enjoyed it, don’t forget to add Hardest Harvest to your wishlist, it would help us so much!

Thanks for reading this far! It’s not over yet, though. To promote the game I’m also giving away a key for Fall Guys limited to my whitelist.
How to join the giveaway, you say? Easy! Just try the demo (about 200MB install size) and reply with a screenshot to this post.
Please, don't reply to the main thread with your screenshot. It's hard to keep track of everyone participating if the screenshots are all scattered around. Thank you!

I love the aesthetic of your game; I'd be totally into this if I weren't GARBAGE at twitchy Shooters. I wish you the best, and thank you for letting me know about the gaming festival; I'd had no idea.

Congrats on making the game!

Devil Daggers style FPS isn't my thing at all, but I'll give it a try. Regardless, making a game is an awesome accomplishment!

What can we do if our laptop can't run the demo? Is a screenshot of me wishlisting it enough?

For what it's worth, I'm truly sorry that you can't run our demo. We tried hard to optimize it to the best we could.
Said so, I'm grateful for each wishlist we receive but it wouldn't be fair to everyone who played to join the giveaway if I changed the rules midway. I also just prefer each wishlist we had came from someone who enjoyed the demo or is genuinely interested in the game.
Maybe you can play the demo on a friend's or family computer?

Bump, also i finally found the game that reminded me of this one.

Forgot since i played it long time ago. It's Swarmlake!

I only discovered about Swarmlake on last summer sale. Had a blast with it but didn't really enjoy the achievements spam the dev put in it. I've beaten the game but now I can't find any reason to play it again :(

A couple of friends and i have a group where we do race games, or go for all achievements (Like in Swarmlake or 8 bit bayonetta), so that's how i found out about it.

Grindy achievements are meh indeed :/

Good luck with the game, I won't try for Fall Guys as your game isn't the sort I'm generally into, but thanks for sharing.

I totally get that our game might not be everyone's cup of tea but, if you want to participate in the Fall Guys giveaway, I didn't set any requirement other than a simple screenshot on purpose. For instance, it might even be from the main menu :)

I have no interest in Fall Guys so no screenshot. Secondly I'd like to say this is probably the type of game that is the furthest away from the kind I enjoy. So take everything I say with a grain of salt.

For me the biggest problem, difficulty wise, are the "Hissing Sprouts" spawners, and the problem is three-fold:

1) They spawn too often
2) They spawn too many sprouts
3) They are particularly difficult to destroy

There's nearly always one of the three leaves that's hidden behind it's own stem. Which makes them very annoying to take out, especially if they spawn so often (it doesn't help that they often spawn close to the edge of the map either). And because they're so hard to kill, you're very easily have an overwhelming army of Hissing Sprouts on the map. Which makes you aim at the sky 90% of the time which doesn't allow you to see anything going on around you.

Another thing is the white moth thing takes too many hits or is too hard to hit. Unless I can blast it early on, yet again there's a Hissing Sprouts armada on me and it game over. I've not gotten much further than that. No matter how fast I take out the spawners, it just spawns too much and it feels like there's no breathing room. It feels like you need absolute perfection, the tiniest mistake and your entire run is ruined.

Thirdly I'm not a huge fan of the slow animation that is used for power-ups that leave you vulnerable for quite a good amount of time.

That's not to say I think it's a bad game, I've never played Devil Daggers. I definitely think it has a lot potential and is a great homage. I quite like the colors and vegetable/farmer theme, I thought that was very original and well done. Sound effects aren't great at the moment but you already explained that. Overal I think it has a lot going for it and I can't wait to see how it improves. But it's a really niche market, and I know I'll never want to play the full version because it's not my type of game. That said I really hope you don't take my post as something negative, and do hope you continue working on the game, it looks and feels really good.

moemustaine certainly made it look a lot easier than it is.

Thanks for your feedback. it's greatly appreciated!
We really struggled to find an approachable spawnset that would make it engaging for seasoned FPS players as well as gamers not fond of the game genre :/
After playing and playing we came to the conclusion that there's definitely a learning curve. In the beginning I personally struggled dealing with the map boundaries and often falling to oblivion. With time I learnt to run on the edge without even looking at the ground. I'm an average skilled FPS player, by the way. With skills like bunny hopping, or our version of the rocket jump melee while pointing the ground it becomes quite easy to avoid sprouts. Also, the charged shot can instantly kill many enemies at once or one hit the Owlnion ;)
There's definitely room for improvements, though. That's why we need all the feedback we can gather, especially the really analytic ones :)

it looks and feels really good.

This really brightens my day. Thank you for playing!

Yeah, I think it's almost impossible to finish the game without the charged shot. I also figured out bunnyhopping by myself, which was cool and useful. I didn't know about the rocket jump, but it doesn't really feel like it's very useful in this game? At least I couldn't find a use for it, I think the animation is too long to really use as an escape. But I'd love to see a video of it in use, maybe I'm missing a tactic where it can be advantageous.

Falling off was a lesser problem for me personally, though it did certainly ruin plenty of runs. I particularly liked that it's sloped at the edge, that certainly saved me a few times.

Also the sound effects for what they are, aren't all that bad even. The only one that really irked me was the falcon cry :D That just felt wrong :p

Depends on the playstyle I guess. I rarely use it. My brother uses it a lot to jump over the sprouts while facing them. Their slow turning speed helps gaining some distance when you're busy shooting to something else. It also makes it easier to avoid the boomberries.

I particularly liked that it's sloped at the edge, that certainly saved me a few times.

I'm so glad someone noticed it!
It was my personal touch. I wanted to give the player a feeling of "woah! I almost fell off but I didn't!"

The only one that really irked me was the falcon cry :D

On the long run it felt really annoying. I feel like we're on the right track to make the player know exactly from which direction the owlnion comes from but that sound clip needs to go. Having to hear it twice in a row is just too much.
Unluckily we couldn't find another distinctive sound fitting the situation before the deadline for the demo release. We are planning to give the entire sound design matter in the hands of a professional anyway in the case we don't run out of money first D:
