That's bugged me for a while now. Yoda's supposed to be so smart, yet basic grammar and syntax somehow remain a mystery to him, so he sounds like an illiterate backwoods retard. WTF, George? Didn't think that one through or what?

If you speak about the ones in KoTOR and such, I don't think those were written in the same spirit as Yoda. Extended Universe included. Yoda's speech could also be linked to an impediment, no matter how smart he is.
